Hello,
Old School player here. Started playing in 97 and went on until 01/02.
Last deck I can remember was the Psychatog deck, so yes I am old.
Recently had a few games with a friend and started re-playing so we're now on a quest to play each other with some cards of the good old times.
My idea is to build one deck of each color, with a twist - the green I'll have it combined with Red.
we have only two rules:
- Decks should cost no more than $50
- Only old-school cards - in our case we're limiting to all cards up until Odyssey (yes we're old).
Here are my ideas.
I would like to ask the support of this community to rank the decks below and perhaps to help with feedback and ideas, what to include, what to remove, etc.
This one is the Blue Deck. It hopes to win by playing Prodigal Sorcerer and its variants and combo with Charisma, Curiosity, Sigil of Sleep whilst controlling the board with classic counterspells and capsize.
This is a black-discard deck built around inflicting damage via The Rack and Megrim, with also my favourite creature Hypnotic Specter and discard spells such as Hymn to Tourach.
This is an aggressive red deck that intends to inflict damage as quick as possible. Quick creatures that can be sacrificed, Blood Lust to boost them and perhaps have a Fling ready to finish the game, and one of my favourite cards ever - Fireblast.
This white deck is a combination of aggression with Shadow creatures and powerful protective enchantements such as Pariah and Worship. Lots of creatures have protection against different colors which makes it very hard to remove.
This is a version of Fires of Yavimaya - this was THE deck to have at the time i was playing. No birds of paradise though as it would violate the rule of budget.
I know that by today's Magic standards the decks are very weak. I was shocked to after many years check some of the best creatures of today. It looks insane. But anyway, as we're limiting the cards to ~ 20 years ago, I don't need to worry about anything released after Odyssey. Ah, and no copies of the Psychatog deck either are allowed.
