Hey, i am back after 6 years of Magic break and i want to play the first Deck i ever played in a tournament. It was a crappy Kamigawa Rats Deck back in 2004. Right now i am in a small casual group with 2 complete beginner and 1 wannabe-pro (who instantly bought a challenger deck). I want it to be Modern legal so i can maybe go to a Modern FNM with my friends. It doesn't have to win anything i'm just in it for the fun. I absolutely want to play Ink-Eyes because its one of my favorite cards in all of Magic History. I want to stay at a budget of 100€ and right now i have zero cards because i sold everything.
can this deck work and maybe win 1 or 2 games at a FNM? do some cards have better options or should i go more into control and not aggro? I am happy about all help, thanks
Here is my rat deck and it wins really regularly against a variety of decks, like elves and such. The only non-modern legal card is dark ritual but you could just change it out. I highly recommend this deck.it wasn't terribly expensive either and its a lot of fun. Its my most consistent tribal deck and the first tribal deck I did. It's great in 1v1 and group games (although suffers if you get targeted by everyone but thats most decks). It beats my other tribes (illusions, elementals, druids, kithkin, and slivers) as well as can hold its own against some aggressive elf tribal decks and merfolk tribal decks.
I'd say replace ravenous with burglar rats since it is better
Rat catcher is a bit too slow. Ogre slumlord will help ya out more.
Plague crafter doesn't seem particularly worth it to include in your deck. It seems more beneficial to have a rat than him.
Skullsnatcher isnt great imo.
Nezumi shortfang is a tad slow. You can do the discard route to win but you will want to make that your deck primarily. Such as using ravenous rats, the unearth discard rat, burglar rat, the other nezumi rat, etc. Discard is a lot slower than doing aggro (obviously ha). My original rat deck was more discard heavy but it didn't hold up well against aggro or even longer games.
Typhoid rats and rancid rats offer great blockers and great for getting ninjitsu to trigger, especially better if you have swarmyard. Swarmyard is a must have
cabal stronghold doesn't seem to add much to your deck. You don't have much to use that much mana on. It doesn't really pay for itself until you have 4 swamps already in play. Ideally you would be killing your opponent near then.
If ya wanna be that guy you could throw in some thornbite staff to get an infinite combo. I don't love them myself but some people do. It is a cheap mean card combo with marrow gnawer, giving you infinite rats.
