Quite simply wondering about making a silly theme deck.
I don't want to make it just out of 3-4 copies of some strong cards that make a few great combos.
It would be an Elf theme deck. So nearly all creatures would be elf's or have an interaction with them... and around +1/+1 counters on them. But am wondering, how viable would this be. Sure it would not be a tournament deck. But don't want to be face stomped by every mate that does a discount copy of a tournament deck.
If you want to play an Elf tribal deck in a sanctioned format then you should probably be playing Modern. It's more possible to win with a straightforward aggro/ramp deck in that format.
Above all though, don't ever play a singleton deck in a non-singleton format. You can win with a roguedeck, you can win with "bad" cards, but you'll never win with a deck that's inconsistent. It's a simple fact that most cards that are good enough to play are good enough to play 3 or 4 of, and a player that can often draw what they need will trounce a player who doesn't know what the hell they're going to draw, every single time.
As far as the format goes. The format is pretty casual. It is for flavour and fun. [I dislike it when someone brings a Myr deck or a turn 3 win deck to a casual friendly setting. And I am fully aware that there is probably nothing I can do against the git who does that all the time.]
Well I don't plan on doing inconsistent... at least not in the early game. Just was wondering as it is a casual deck if I could fill in cards that fill in a similar role.
Cheap unit: Elvish Warrior, Cylan Elf, ect ect.
Similar ramp cards I can find in my card remains: Arbor elf, Lanowar elves, Elvish mystic. I know that Arbor elf is better in some instances especially if you plan to enchant lands.
Similar instant buffs and land grabs
Similar for various elf knights they are all mostly generic and interchangeable.
I am mostly worried about my end game. With what remains of my card collection. I can either go shop for duplicates of my cards... Or the cheaper way to go, go for what I have left: either filling all my elves with +1/+1 tokens, or turning all of my lands into creatures with haste and giving everything a buff+trample before attacking, multiply my +1/1 and multiply even more elves. Sure I could add in a random elemental or a forest-y tentacle monster of doom something that would break the flavour a bit.
TLDR; I am wondering how ****ed I am with a singleton deck against a non-singleton deck in a friendly format. Can I make it work? What should I watch out for?
Ask people to build decks for the highlander format and you will be more at home.
Suggestion, post this in casual rather then in Vintage. You will get far more help and advice, those forums see a magnitude of more views then this forum, the vintage forum is more for competitive Vintage decks.
Yes, this can be done and can be viable enough, if the meta is casual enough and/or the other players are at a lower level than yourself. And if your singleton deck is built well and with a game plan instead of just adding random cards. I've done this myself a few times to get to more equal grounds with the rest of my playgroup. It challenged me both in deck building and playing and made me an even better player/deckbuilder because of it. I still have my singleton 60 card sliver deck, for example, which also only uses lands and slivers and nothing else.
