How are you supposed to know it can only be used once per spell? By starting after Revised Edition, I guess. Strangely, it originally couldn't gain life if the spell got countered. The Fourth Edition version is even stranger, since it can be activated later in the turn. I think it has something to do with interrupts.

The original is powerful enough to be restricted in the "Alpha 40" format, where cards are played as they read. Other than that, it does little for a lot, but try telling me that in 1995.

Simple and versatile removal. hero's downfall has replaced it for me for instant speed
