Its a typical draft chaff card. If it let you sacrifice a creature instead of itself, it might be playable although Nezumi Bone-Reader isn't played surprisingly.

Any sort of free token generation would pop with the altar. i wonder how many people back in the hayday of Ol'Skool MtG used this with Goblin Warrens for lots of goblins.

Should it not be a Spirit Wall nowadays? Flavortext really implies that. Maybe the spirit stops being a spirit and just becomes a living wall?

a bit off topic, but I’m surprised there hasn’t been a cycle of witch’s familiars in a set.
It’s an easy cycle with legendaries and would’ve been perfect in eldraine.
See Maddy from the fables graphic novel for more context as it’s the best example I can think of.
