any thoughts on ventifact bottle as a mana storage medium that works with Kurkesh?
That is... very interesting. Delayed mana doubling could indeed have some interesting applications. I'm pretty sure I have one of these in one of my rare boxes as well... somewhere.
When I find it, I'll give it a spin and let you know how it plays.
Played a game last night, but had to jump in after starts, so I didn't mulligan and got mana screwed, so there really isn't much to report, except that once again my Dark Depths gets used by someone else with thespian's stage, rather than me.
I think it'll need to come out. It had its glorious game, maybe it's time for Dark Depths to retire.
Contemplating breaking the no-durdle rule a bit, and put Salvaging Station back in. The draw power is down a bit right now, as is the bauble value. Part of the reason for this is that I'm considering adding Explosive Apparatus. Kurkesh likes his explosives.
Magnifying Glass and Tamiyo's Journal sadly look to be the only sources of clues that we have, but I'd like to give Kurkesh clues, so those might be potentials.
Wild-Field Scarecrow will replace something as well, in order to get more land filtering. Shame it's not to play, but getting potentially 4 lands to hand will set me up to not miss land drops.
Brain in a Jar is fun, obviously, but we don't actually run spells at this time, so it's not fun enough.
Sin Prodder should be good for Daretti decks, so it could be acceptable here. I'd like to try him out, once I get him.
===
Myr Propagator, Radiate, Raging River , Conch Horn, Eye of Yawgmoth, Rings of Brighthearth (durdle), Titan Forge , Lux Cannon are under performing. Not all need to be cut (the deck doesn't want 100%), but the deck is a little on the weaker side right now, and needs to come back up. I still want more creatures. I also seem to have the XX cost token producer, which isn't on my list, so that will need to be looked at. It's also under-performing.
Rings seems like durdle, when added to Kurkesh. We'll just stick to the Captain. Radiate has had it's awesome few games, but without anything of our own to bounce it off of, it's time to cycle it out.
Instead, we get Clues!
===
The first game was a 1v1 (still 40 life, Multiplayer rules), while we were waiting for the other game to end. Our hero Kaptain Kurk against Ruric Thar and his Werewolf Horde.
So I figure I can draw myself out of a hole. Turns out to work, and not even be needed for a bit, as I start with the Pyrite Spellbomb, then I drop a Goblin Kaboomist on turn 2, which proceeds to hold off the Werewolf Hordes for a while. Kurkesh joins on turn 4, after a mindstone on turn 3 with both grave hates. I'm forced to eat the mindstone for cards the next turn, but that's ok.
Only problem is that I can't get aggressive due to the serious wall of werewolf that's facing me. Just as it looks like the scales may tip and that my pile of 7 landmines won't cut it (that dude that gives a wolf whenever something flips was doing work), I get my Glacial Crevasses. This allows me to swing with Kurkesh with impunity, as my Burnished Hart digs me four more lands, and the Buried Ruin (+Liquimetal Coating) returns the Hart and a Pyrite Spellbomb for more explosive action, since a Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle joined my ranks.
With that much explosive power, an unblockable Commander, and fogs for days, the werewolves retreat from the field of battle, and Captain Kurk claims victory.
Game 2: Captain Kurk vs. Meren ("Not jerk" - he says) and Karlov lifegain and beats.
I proceed into further scariness with Gauntlet of Power, which allows me to... wait for it... MAGNIFYING GLASS out TWO clue tokens (Kurkesh!), and then double sac both tokens (Kurkesh!) to draw 4 cards for the low, low cost of 12 mana! This gets me a Pentavus, which I cast, and then Meren drops a Fecundity. Well, I guess I don't need the clues anymore.
I fail to kill Karlov's Sorin, (+1/+0 emblem version, whichever that is) so I drop a Mirror Works into a copied Mimic Vat. This prompts Meren to take action, and I get Terastodoned killing both mimic vats, and the gauntlet. So I use mana to make more pentavites. Then he kills my Pentavus for good measure with a Krosan Grip. Karlov goes nute, and gets a lifelinky team, so I lose pentavites, and draw cards. I get a Caged Sun, so on my turn I play it and copy it. Then I play my hand of stuff, and copy it all. Yay. Then I kill Sorin for real this time with my remaining three pentavites.
Meren does a Wrath-y thing. I draw 6 cards from my 3 pentavites and 3 elephants. He Terastodons more of my stuff, but hits the immediate threats, leaving both my mirrorworks, and my suns. How kind. I drew into a Gauntlet of Might. So I drop it, copy it, and drop my hand again, and copy everything. I also re-drop Kurkesh, and a Goblin Welder.
Meren messes up, and might have been able to win with Rune-scarred Demon to get a Living Death, but thought he was 1 mana short, when he just forgot to play a land. I'm not convinced though, since I had a Pyrite spellbomb + copy to deal with the Blood Artist, though the resulting army would have been... scary. Instead, I use Mindless Automaton[c/] to cycle cards into Bludgeon Brawl as Meren scoops, use Goblin Welder to return the Gauntlet of Power and copy, so that I have +6 mana per mountain. Valakut + Burnished hart provides clearing power, but a Path to Exile spares Karlov or a turn, because I foolishly put all my eggs on one Kurkesh.
I learn from that mistake, and the next turn has me equipping my Caged suns and stuff across a variety of tokens, and despite Kurkesh getting exiled again, the 4 Wand of Elements tokens (Wand + mirror works, activate each + kurkesh, haste due to Anger), (getting +6 from the various gauntlets), plus other stuff, and additional equip power, makes Karlov finally fall.
Nothing stop das machine! (except for when things do...)
Our Heroic Captain vs. Jenara +1 counter synergy, Child of Alara tribal gods (YES!), Selvala ramp and life gain.
Opening hand as 2 lands (Ghost Quarter, mountain) and a Stigma Lasher, so we pray for a second mountain and keep. Lead off with the mountain, and a Scrabbling Claws for the draw option. Jenara leads with a Hardened Scales, so everyone immediately knows what's up. Others play lands. Turn 2 gets us only a thawing glaciers, so it's going to take us some time to get that Lasher out... (although in hindsight I realize I could have tapped my mountain, then ghost quartered it for another mountain for the fun play), so a Pyrite Spellbomb joins our claws for our bauble-y fun.
Jenara ramps up and then gets out a Forgotten Ancient, which gets counters fast. Child pull out a turn 3 Urza's Incubator naming God. Yes. This ***** is legit. He follows that up with Phenax, God of Deception. Selvala drops his commander. I follow the next turn by dropping Stigma Lasher, and Selvala cries a bit that he can't even risk tapping Selvala now.
In the end, he activates Selvala anyways, drops a Rampagin Baloths off of her, and also Banishing Lights my Lasher. Well, that's a thing. I drop an O-stone 'for protection' and pass. I also pass on the next turn, leaving my mana open. By this time, Jenara has dropped a Spike Feeder and moved the Forgotten Ancient counters onto it, so it's a 20/20. Selvala moves to Swords it, so Jenara eats it for 40 life.
I plan to pop the O-Stone on the end of Selvala's turn, but he forces the issue with that green spell that hits ench/art/land, and aims at the Hardened Scales, Oblivion Stone, and my Thawing Glaciers (meanie). I thaw and Ghost Quarter my glaciers in response (I want mountains, because I have Gauntlet of Might in hand), and nuke the O-Stone. Selvala realizes this returns my Lasher, and quickly bribes me with granting everyone lands. I accept the dirty bribe, and end up Lashing Jenara instead. I drop a Mirrorworks, and also drop a Welding Jar and copy it, this way I can protect the works, and also my gauntlets next turn.
Jenara taps out, and Altered Egos my Stigma Lasher. With 8 +1/+1 counters on it. Child drops a Purphoros, God of the Forge, and a Thassa. God count = 4.
I drop my gauntlet, copy it, and drop Kurkesh. Let the fun begin. I also drop a Thopter Squadron, copy it, and pop off a single token for chumps vs the Ego. The Altered Stigma Lasher hits Child, so he's lashed as well! Child starts doing dumb stuff with Eternal Witness and Demonic Tutor, and culminates with a havengul Lich which reanimates Jenara's Avenger of Zendikar, which has been milled by Phenax. Purphoros kills of selvala, and drops me into unhappy territory.
I go into combat, and revenge upon Child for 25 damage with my thopter squadrons. Jenara unblockables his team, hits child for another 10, and then wraths. With an actual Wrath of God. Boo! No regen. Then follows with a doubling season. Child casts Child.
I re-drop Kurkesh, drop an Unstable Obelisk (I think I forgot to copy), and a Pentavus (and copy). Pass. Jenara goes to drop Ajani with doubling season out, and makes waves as if to gain a hundred life. I move to explode the Obelisk on Child, then learn that child ALSO prevents regen (darn it!), so we backtrack a bit, I activate my Pentavus and copy a lot, and with the trigers on the stack explode the child.
The we remember that Jenara had been Stigma Lashered and it wouldn't have made a difference. It was hilarious. You should have been there. So boards are clear, again, (except for Gods) and I have ~18ish pentavites. Get there!
Child unfortunately manages to drop his own Avenger of Zendikar, and the onslaught of Purphoros Triggers takes him the game. Well played!
Kurkesh vs Angry Omnath, Sliver Queen, Mina and Denn, Phage
A Turn 2 Stigma Lasher hits the field, but going last means that everyone drops a blocker on turn 3 (or earlier) except phage. So Stigma goes in that direction, but comes into a case of being suddenly dead. Sliver Queen hits the field turn 4, and Phage gets a Sundial of the Infinite out, so I drop a Magnifying glass TO DOUBLE CLUE! YEAH!
I break a clue the next turn, BUT ALSO COPY THAT! YEAH! I Drop a Wand of the Elements for some chumpage, and lead into a Caged Sun.
SQ gets scary, but forgets to kill my sun, so I drop an Oblivion stone for protection. I had 8 lands anyways, but this allows me to crack my clue as well as explode the stone. Which gets forced immediately, so I pop a land to the wand of the elements (2 lands down), copy that, break my clue, copy that, and hit the reset button. My elementals come in after. Omnath replays omnath, and makes more elementals. Mina and Denn does a land tempty thing. Everyone is tempted, so I join in and get a Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle. With 3 mountains out, but I also am sitting on a Myriad Landscape. Phage wraths, so I crack the Lanscape in response to it, to kill off omnath in response, not enjoying the prospect of a potential 24 damage to a person's face. I don't want that risk. Phage got a Command Beacon, and finally gets phage to hand.
Time is getting close, so Omnath Bows out (nearly dead), as does mina and denn (top deck mode with no presence).
I replay into Kurkesh and a Gauntlet of Might. Phage drops Phage, with Whispersilk Cloak, and opts to go for queen, so the cloak dies and queen chumps. My Gauntlet dies, so I get it back with a Myr Retriever and I add a Thopter Squadron and some tokens. Phage gets fear and goes my way, so a thopter soaks it. We get wrathed again.
I add an Obsidian Fireheart to my lineup (which consists of only the gauntlet), and start setting fire to lands. SQ drops a Westvale abbey and moves to transform in. IN RESPONSE, I SET FIRE TO IT. YES. WE HAVE A BURNING ORMENDAHL, PROFANE PRINCE, AND HE WILL CONTINUE TO BURN. I then set fire to the remainder of Sliver queen's lands (11 total, including Oremdahl, 32 life), while Phage is busy keeping Oremdahl from connecting with his maze of ith, though since SQ is out of lands, Phage is now concerned about his potentially catching fire. His Own Westvale abbey is still spitting out clerics, so no life linky for a few turns yet.
People in my playgroup view my Kurkesh deck as a 'Strong' deck. I am confused and now wondering how to remedy this situation. There's only so much crap I can put into it, and I feel that it is currently slightly below standards. I imagine some of my bias is coming through there.
Taking suggestions on:
Cards from new sets to include that I haven't examined yet.
More aggressive plays that can be replaced. If you can think of good artifact creatures that I can attack with, which still have cool abilities to copy.
More instants.
Please also suggest removals of items which share a role, if able, as well as expected power. Keep in mind, I'm trying to keep the powerlevel stable, so if something gets upgraded, something needs to be downgraded.
When I find it, I'll give it a spin and let you know how it plays.
Thanks for the suggestion!

The first game was a 1v1 (still 40 life, Multiplayer rules), while we were waiting for the other game to end. Our hero Kaptain Kurk against Ruric Thar and his Werewolf Horde.
I keep a one land hand. I want that to sink in. Of course, the one land hand is Mountain, Pyrite Spellbomb, Scrabbling Claws, Phyrexian Furnace, Mindstone, Goblin Kaboomist, and Skull Clamp.

Game 2: Captain Kurk vs. Meren ("Not jerk" - he says) and Karlov lifegain and beats.
The game starts off in a bit of a see-saw, with Meren ramping up lands, me being scary with a sol ring for an early Kurkesh into Power Matrix (which prompts Meren to tutor up Caustic Caterpillar), and Karlov starting off with Karlov and a Sun Droplet. Meren self mills into Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Kokusho, the evening Star, Avenger of Zendikar, and other stuff. I also drop an early Obsidian Fireheart, but only get to set fire to two lands (one of each player) before Karlov exiles him. How rude.
