**Roshem and Diarnan had no trouble making it out of town to the west; the wall was pretty thoroughly ruined in this stretch, and the woods abutted its ruins almost directly. They could see little in the forest beyond, which was gloomy and, let's be honest, a little bit spooky.**

Sing lustily and with good courage.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.
"Friend-in-furs, as we near our subject I feel I must offer a caution. In the stories I have heard, Sphinxes are beasts of immeasurable linguistic cunning and speak in puzzling tongues. It would best serve our resolution if we thought carefully before speaking any words."
"Think before speaking, I think I can do that" Diarnan said whilst smelling the bark of a nearby tree. "Holland, don't let me get ahead of myself." A magpie in the tree above him cawed in response.
"That's Holland, he tries to keep me out of trouble" Diarnan jumped to grab the lowest hanging bow of the tree, intending to jump along among the branches "He's smart for a bird, smart for a person even. You don't have animal friends? "
Roshem waved a hand in midair, materializing a grouping of Dragonflies before Diarnan. They fluttered around him in a fickle dance. "They are neither true nor friends, but they can bring warmth on otherwise cold nights."
Diarnan sits on the end of a particularly well made branch that allowed for an easy, comfortable seat (for someone who sits in trees) and removed a set of pan pipes from his bag.
Diarnan - What does a sphinx sound like? I can call him to us maybe."
Roshem pulled at the curl of his beard as he contemplated the question. "That is unknown to me. But they bear intelligence, and speak the same as you and I. Words may deliver our sphinx better than a melody."
Diarnan - "The sphinx is a strange animal indeed. There may be other animals in these woods though"
Diarnan began playing the pan pipes in an odd manner, creating sounds not of music but of animals. The voices of insects, birds, rodents and rabbits in an attempt to call them near.
**Deeper in the woods, they heard a loud, melodious roar.**

Diarnan - "I've never heard a voice like that before. It must be the sphinx!"
Diarnan was immediately on his feet, bounding between tree branches in the direction of the roar. Holland flying close by in a way that looked to be giving Diarnan warning though he did not slow.
Holland - Diarnan! Remember he said to be careful. You're not on your own anymore.
Diarnan looked back with wide eyes as if he had forgot Roshem was there. He dropped to the forest floor and waited anxiously for Roshem to catch up, glancing between him and the direction of the roar.
**In the gloom they could see two glowing golden eyes.**

**The eyes blinked twice, then the creature emerged. It was perhaps six feet tall, with the body of a lion and the face of a bewitchingly beautiful, dark-skinned woman, with glowing golden eyes. When it spoke, they could see fangs.**
Sphinx - "What friend am I who cannot know your name?"

Sphinx - "There are two paths for you that lead from here. In the first, you answer my questions correctly, and I will grant you one request. In the other, you are wrong, and I eat your hearts.
"There was a man who bore twelve children; each child bore thirty sons and thirty daughters, white men and black women. One died every day, yet in the end, they were immortal. Who were they?"

From now on he'll be casting Vibe in preparation for the sphinx.
Diarnan - "He says it's not polite to taunt him with fake food. Holland doesn't have much fun."
Still casting vibe

Diarnan - "Hello forest friend, my name is Diarnan, did you hear us coming?"
Casting vibe to avoid being caught off guard
