With Karzai constitutionally bound to step down from office, polls for the next president of Afghanistan opened today.
So much of Afghanistan's future is uncertain, but it is inspiring that people are willing to endure great risks for democracy even at the threat of violence from the Taliban. Hopefully their next leader will be a better president than Karzai.
Iraq couldn't do it. Never went there but got the impression they had their crap together better than Afghanistan. The place will fall back into being political Jund as soon as we leave (incidentally, their flag is GRB which is why I thought of it). Respect for those fighting to make their country suck less, and sadness to know they are doomed to fail.
I've been to both, I think the Afghan's has a better shot at it than Iraq but the country is likely doomed to failure due to geography and the fact their largest cash crop is poppy (i.e. think opium).
