These two cards are what the entire deck is built around. They make it tick and lead to the decks god draws. Each one is better against a certain strategy and worse against the other.
Hero of Iroas: He will be the biggest badass on the field and will become that biggest fast. He is best on curve versus aggro decks where he can get large and outclass all of their dudes. He is also great against midrange for the same reason, he gets large.
Meletis Astronomer: He is a card advantage master. This is easily the best card in the deck. He rips through your deck looking for action. He finds everything from creatures to d-spheres. He gives you a lot of game against control, negating the natural downside of playing auras.
Fiendslayer Paladin : I needed a creature that mono black and burn had a tough time dealing with and this guy is easily it. Those decks have almost no outs to the card and once you start suiting him up its GG. His body is also not irrelevant in any aggro matchups being a first strike lifelinker.
Nyx-Fleece Ram : This is one of the weirder cards in the deck. An aggroish deck with mainboard 0/5’s? Whaaaaaaaaa? This is actually one of the most important cards we got from Journey. Playing the deck I always had a hard time balancing creatures and enchantments to make the Astronomer better. I oringinally ran spirit of the labyrinth which was just terribad. This guy is insane versus aggro, can be enchanted versus any red deck without fear and is an enchantment. Now depending on testing I may prefer the next card over this…
Aegis of the Gods : I like this gentlemen. He is an enchantment, a creature, and he has a ability. Now whether that ability is good will come from further testing. He blanks burn spells, thoughtseize, celestial flare and a bunch of random cards.
Ethereal Armor : This card is gross. Almost half our cards are enchantments making this card just the nuttiest thing ever.
Hopeful Eidolon
Nyxborn Shieldmate
Eidolon of Countless Battles : I mushed these cards together because they all serve the same purpose. Pump dudes and leave behind a minor threat. Hopeful closes the door on most aggro decks, nyxborn takes hero of iroas out of mortars range while being a cheap dude, and Battles is Ethereal armor 4-8 which is pretty good. It’s good to note that the fact that hopeful and nyxborn are both one drops gives us a few free wins with multiple ethereal armors.
Stratus Walk : Gogo more draft commons. This card was a recent addition and has been SUPER impressive. It gives dudes permanent evasion for cheap AND cycles on its own.
Banishing Light
Detention Sphere: I guess we should eventually interact with our opponent. Detention sphere is the best answer to everything in standard and we get to run then max amount and have a way to tutor for them (Astronomer). The 3-1 split is to give me an answer to opposing spheres, may be wrong…
Gods Willing: The best way to protect a creature and trigger heroic in standard. It also scrys and punches through damage. Card is just sick.
1 Mortal Obstinacy: Enchantment removal that triggers heroic
1 Nyx-Fleece Ram: More aggro hate, can be found with the astronomer
2 Prognostic Sphinx: More control/mono black hate. This card is near impossible to deal with and puts you so far ahead with the scry. Can also be suited up without a care
2 Tethmos High Priest: Experimental card but given that out 2 centerpieces die a lot and cost 2 I figured this is great redundancy versus removal.
What do you guys think? I have been working on this deck for awhile and I want to know your guys opinons
Some synergies I think you are missing...Battlefield Thaumaturge...with Ordeal of Thassa. Keeps your hand full, triggers heroic. Only costs U with both Thaumaturge and Hero of Iroas. Also, while not an Enchantment, I think a deck that plays four Eidolon of Countless Battles would benefit from doubling your army for only W if Thaumaturge is out. Sage of Hours might be really good here.
