I have two budget standard decks I built and play with right now. The other deck was built with multi-player battles in mind. Since the group I play with does tend to prefer the group games, I was hoping this would do alright in group play too. The first time I played this deck, I got absolutely destroyed and so I thought I had built a terrible deck. I would later play against my brother-in-law a few one-on-one games. He destroyed my other deck. As such, he didn't want to play against my other deck more than that once. But he actually lost to this deck repeatedly. So we played again and again. My decks are usually no match for him, so I think he enjoyed that something I put together actually could give him a small challenge. Of course, Spark Elemental can be shutdown a bit by double strike. Yeah, he wasn't playing standard, but I was. After that encouraging set of games, I actually played it back with the local group again, this time in a few games of Two-Headed Giant, and it seemed to do alright. My partner and I lost some. We won some. My double strike and their battalion deck.
I haven't figured out what is going in the main deck for sure, though I am sure that the following will be coming out.
Foundry Street Denizen and Dynacharge will be exchanged for the Nyxborn. The denizen was in there for a one drop creature, to support early aggro, but since this wasn't a mono-red deck, he was a weak choice. Best I came up with as a cheap card in my initial build of this standard deck. As for the instant, well, I rarely used that card in a game. By dropping these for the Nyxborn, I believe I am preserving my count of 1 mana cards.
I realize that there are some better rares than the cards I am using here, but my goal is to keep the deck cheap. I like playing variety and my budget is limited. So maintaining two different decks means that anything I do to improve these decks has to be cheap.
Would my proposed changes to the cards I am using be any good? And if the cards I am planning to add to this deck would work, any suggestions on which cards they should replace, and what should be my sideboard?
