My son and I are getting into MTG (him for the first time [he's 8], me after a long time) and we started playing this week with a couple of the M2013 Intro Decks. Specifically, Red and Green. It was the fastest way to get a functional deck and to begin playing each other.
If a budget minded dad and kid wanted to start building off of the foundation of these decks, what would you suggest? What are some easy / common swaps to get a Green or Red deck kicked up a notch? Or, is there a benefit in swapping out the deck's secondary colors? For example, the Red deck currently runs Green secondary, but I remember being a Red/Black fan back in the day ...
Red:
I think you could see some benefit in going mono-red, swapping out all of the green. I haven't played with it myself but green doesn't seem to play a massive part in the deck and doesn't add much. I would grab another copy or two of Krenko, Mob Boss (Mid TCGplayer price is $2.23) and another two Krenko's Command (Mid TCGplayer price is $0.14).
I would run a very goblin orientated deck; there is a high probability that goblins may appear in return to ravnica, but for now, grab your hands on some more of the above as well as Arms Dealer, Mogg Flunkies and another Goblin Arsonist. This deck at the moment doesn't have a lot going for it but it does have some future (debatable) promise.
Green:
I feel you could run a mono-green deck here, but black does add a little to the deck. White is also a nice splash if you have some plains lying around.
The base deck itself is not promising either but if you put a lot of money into it, mono-green or GW is pretty nice at the moment. But it might not be cheap...
Notes:
I used the TCGplayer mid prices... you should be able to get them for a little cheaper than these prices.
Oh, and these views are what I would do... probably not what everyone else would do.

There are some very strong yet quite expensive green cards lying around (Wolfir Silverheart, Thragtusk) as well as some decent but not quite competitive cards (cautiously, I'll say Craterhoof Behemoth). What I would do... it could do with a bit more mana ramp (Avacyn's Pilgrim, Borderland Ranger) and then Rancor, Ring of Kalonia plus other cheap white cards such as Doomed Traveller.
