if there really is any decent standard viable cards coming in OGW, what'd be a minimal # of Wastes to include in the mana base?
they better include some new tri's or duals or a new broad fetch. i don't like the idea of just green sorceries and Evolving Wilds to fetch them.
I know it's too soon to think outside of knowing what the set will bring, but I still don't see colorless being a thing in standard without some additional land hijinx besides a couple Wastes + 4 EW
Blighted Woodlands can also fetch them, as they are basic. And if the leading theory is the correct one, then Blighted Woodlands can cast cards with <> in the cost.
There is still speculation on how exactly Wastes will work (new color or erata for colorless). If it is a new land, they will need to print very powerful cards to justify add essentially a 6th color to either splash or play the Waste-colored cards.
I'm on the side that says the Wastes are the new way of saying colorless mana, and in this case, I think the origins painlands my end up seeing a lot more play, as they produce both the enemy colored mana, and colorless mana (for wastes). This allows players to say splash random waste-colored (diamond) cards in their existing tri/quad-color decks (abzan/dark jeskai)
The issue with dual or fetchland wastes is that the designers would have to envision Eldrazi working with colored allies and story-wise they aren't doing that.
Given that the basic land is Wastes and not city, I have difficulty envisioning colorless focus existng outside of the Oath of he gatewatch set.

Seeing as it's an entirely new basic land, I have difficulty envisioning it being a one shot creation only for this set.
true to the flavor, the Eldrazi won't help with more lands. maybe this is a best opportunity for wizards to test the waters going forward and just a token use of the new basic land.
so then further, in future sets, there's more room to enable and make use of this. that would make sense. lol but does anything wizards do make sense?

They might reprint Wastes and similar mandatory colorless mana cards, but I don't anticipate them revisiting Colorless as an item for awhile. Kind of like how some Phyrexian mana cards have been reprinted in Commander or Modern Master sets, but no new actual cards use Phyrexian mana since the new Phyrexia set.
Just like Phyrexian mana is highly flavorful yet restricted to Phyrexia. So to is the Wastes to the Eldrazi. I don't see them reprinting Wastes or Mandatory Colorless cards in any significant manner until we revisit Eldrazi in a set after Oath of the Gatewatch.

With a little luck they toy further with Wastes in the future and create "trilands" that have basic land types and are wastes too. A sort of Wasted Sea that is an island and swamp and taps for blue, black and <>. Just gotta figure out how wasted we need to get them overt there at wizards to make it happen. As a bonus, it techically gets around the reserved list because it taps for <> in addition to the other colors. Eat it reserved list.

RIP Batman guy. I hope somebody picks up the slack now that you are gone. Sick children need their Batman.

You could easily put Wastes in a city, just make the artwork show the city landfill. Or even an empty lot. Or the site of a Magic battle that left the land scarred and it's mana ties severed.
There are so many ways you could put Wastes into any setting. The name could literally go in any setting.
I want it as much as anyone but let's not delude ourselves by turning this into another Reserved list thread: it will never happen, because the list has never been a problem. Force of Will and Wasteland aren't RL cards and they haven't been reprinted ever except some scarce, car-priced Judge promos and Online.

They don't even need to keep the name. Unlike other basic lands, Wastes doesn't have a subtype. They just say "Basic Land" instead of "Basic Land - Wastes". So, assuming the new rule is that Basic Lands with no subtype have {T}: Add <> to your mana pool, they could print subtypeless basic lands in any set they want, with any name they want to match the set's flavor.
