After a few disastrous early encounters, the Mirrans learned that through valor, skill, and careful containment, these plagued minions could be defeated. The Mirrans used their natural proficiency with Mirrodin's metal as their edge in battle. Myr automatons left over from Memnarch's mad reign became allies against the Phyrexians. Levelers and golems left masterless by the Vanishing were recruited to defend the plane.
When he says "levelers", does he actually mean Levelers? And I never read the set novel(s), but weren't the Levelers destroyed? And if the answers are something like "yes" and "no" respectively, would a sequel to Leveler make sense in this environment?
I wouldn't be surprised. The Levelers were a very prominent part of the Mirrodin storyline, and were powerful weapons of war that the Mirrans could have access to.
So, naturally they will be Phyrexian, because the Mirrans can't have anything cool. They have to appear to be completely helpless peasants against the all-powerful machine of Phyrexia, so the deus ex machina that the Mirrans use to win will be even more unsatisfying.
My personal cynicism aside, Wizards seems to have been hinting at repurposed Levelers for the Mirrans. Myr Welder makes reference to them too IIRC. Maybe they're calling them something else if there are 0 hits in the orb.
Back when I read the novels, I got the sense that "leveler" was just a general term for the giant war machines that Memnarch used to keep Mirrodin's population under control, not just the specific card Leveler.
We'll probably see some repurposed Memnarch-era war machines in this block, and maybe even a throwback to the original Leveler, but I think the quote in the article isn't a direct spoiler. It's just using the general term from the novels.
I'd like to see one, but just as long as it doesn't have the same stupid ability as the first one. Eater of Days was fine in this sort of low-cost, high-risk card but Leveler was simply...bad. Considering you couldn't attack with it, if you didn't have a Stiffle ready, you had just forfeited the game

Some kind of witty comment should be here.
I'm sure you can think of something by yourself.
it says Levelers were recruited to defend Mirrodin against Phyrexian, so I doubt they will have infect. They will probably be Mirran. That doesn't exclude a different name but not something blight-related

The levelers were used by Memnarch to thin out populations that go too large. There were vast numbers of them, and a whole crew of constructs who repaired them.
* Fun fact: Slobad actually lived in one of the leveler's caves for awhile. (In fact you can see him in the artwork)
The levelers weren't destroyed, they are left masterless. But the Veldalken were able to control the Levelers so it's possible that they'd dust off the levelers in the fight against Phyrexia.
We could see a throwback to levelers in Scars block.

Watch Wizards give it "When NeoLeveler enters the battlefield, you get 10 poison counters" as an ability.
Leveler didnt lose you the game right away and another one wouldn't either.
It would enter with 9 poison counters have to attack each turn if able and you'd get a poison counter every time it attacked. It would cost 2 colorless and be a 20/20.

That would be stupid. On turn 4 I could just play that card you made, then Fling it for the win.

Surprisingly "levelers" appears on Myr Welder.
