I agree. I prefer feudal Japan over futuristic Japan. When I mention the Kami War being ancient history, I mean that Kamigawa will have changed in that it is more developed rather than vast wastelands of Kami attacks, and the conflict wouldn't be so large-scale. But not that it would become so futuristic. I'd expect it to be more advanced than it was, but not dramatically so, to the point of being well beyond the fantasy genre, or planes such as Kaladesh, which already pushed the envelope on technology in fantasy. It'd be a bit sad if they couldn't just make Kamigawa a more popular and resonant Japan World without forcing a futuristic veneer over it. Wrong kind of anime to integrate IMO. Make it a recovered Japan World, with no Kami manifestations (to avoid making abstract art that even Eldrazi were unpopular for) but retain its natural landscape as a Japan-like plane, with settings reminiscent of classic anime settings set in the country. Kyoto is a fine example. Shrines, cherry blossom trees, Mt. Fuji, as references etc.
