I honestly believe it is mostly people just repeating it without having ever tried it or needing to try it, because that's what the edh rules emphasize. Every time I have tried it with different groups it doesn't work.
Would you care to elaborate what do you mean by "it doesn't work"? Have you tried to identify why it doesn't work in your case? It clearly works for a lot of other people so there must be a reason why it does not in your case. Finding root cause is the first step in solving problems.
"You sound like you just don't want to lose"
"I can't spend money on cards right now"
"I only have the one deck"
"I want to win"
"I prefer games with stronger cards"
"Combo is just part of the game"
I have heard the social contract spiel a million times, it has never worked [for me]. This game is too expensive for people to do different decks.
There that should be the reason you heard about the social contract a million times it works for people, its just unfortunate that it doesn't work for you.
Yes there is power creep in Magic and they push standard sets to sell packs, and yes they have commander in mind when designing cards (its their cash cow afterall) but besides the Commander product they do rarely if any design cards where the only application is commander. And like other people said you dont have to play them if you don't want if you wanna search for other synergies go ahead.

Lol, if people don’t want to play low-powered then that’s their prerogatives, but what a bad excuse. You can’t afford $30 to buy a precon to play low-powered, because you spent thousands on cEDH...right...
Yes actually, people don't want to spend money on weak cards. That's a thing. Why would you believe this isn't a thing?
The more auto includes they print, the less interested I am in this format. There are so many cards now that are so individually strong that I feel like I have no more room for fun deckbuilding. Why try and find synergy when I have 50 cards that are roughly as strong with no conditions?
Don't build to win, build to have fun At least that's how I build, and I never get tired of finding new stuff and discovering new synergies I haven't tried before.
Every playgroup I am a part of is too strong for this to work
Let me introduce you to the wonderful feature of this great format called "social contract"...
Seriously, commander is what it is today because people can enjoy the format at multiple power levels. Talk with your playgroup if they could build less powerful decks in addition to what they have today. Which does not mean using less powerful cards. Making less efficient win conditions work more consistently and navigate deck built this way to win is a challenge that develops skills which make you a better player. People don't find interesting running competitive decks against precons. There is no sense of accomplishment, no reward, when there is no challenge.
Its only going to get more rampant especially since Wizards has stated they have changed their design and playtest philosphy with F.I.R.E in which they are deliberately pushing the power level of sets (See Oko and his forty Elks).
Yes but they are pushing power levels for cards playable in 1v1 which is vastly different environment than multiplayer. Also they specifically said that they did not think that Oko will be that good.

Let me first start out by showing the card that makes me dislike fists of flame. Zada, Hedron Grinder
Why does this bother me so much?
Because to me, this card is so glaringly obviously designed exactly for zada and nothing else it annoys the crap out of me.
It feels like a designer liked their zada deck and decided to make exactly the card they wanted for exactly that deck.
I am worried that this trend will happen more and more, with cards tailor made specifically for popular commanders instead of just ... to exist. Printing deliberate must include cards hurts my favorite aspect of edh, the deck building. Every must-have is an interesting decision I no longer get to make and the game is made a little bit worse for it.
I don't want a designer to look at a general and then tailor make a card for that general. I want to explore the card pool and find the synergies myself.
