Anyone else think that Oath of Kaya has potential? It's sorcery-speed Lightning Helix for 1WB, and it also comes with a little opponent-draining bonus if you have at least one planeswalker they attack.
I do, we're one decent flicker effect away from making it quite brutal.
Imagine curving some painless discard into this against burn and then flickering it with something like felidar guardian or flickerwisp.
I've been brewing with a saheeli rai + liquimetal coating deck for a bit now that already wants removal and felidar guardian anyway. Hitting black, using coating to make it an artifact, and then dropping a copy with saheeli still gets you another ETB trigger.
Magic Christmas land? Yes. Worth a couple card slots to try it out anyway? Yes. This is just me thinking off the top of my head if I was going to jump trough all the hoops, how good is the effect on repeat. I'm sure there is a much more streamlined plan of building with this like starfield of nyx or panharmonicon/mycosynth lattice if we're digging deep lol.
A little slow at 3 cmc, but the ability of the new Ashiok to stop fetch lands might be useful against certain decks.
Card seems obnoxious with any dork ramp. You can t2 on the play lock your opponent out of fetch lands or lock tron out of map activations.
Then you're getting a boat load of mill stapled onto the backend with GY hate should you need it. I really see this as just a static effect and most decks probably won't use the mill more than once (keep it out of bolt range). It's very potent against a variety of decks.
What is also great is that if you follow this up with a sweeper your opponent has to spin wheels for potentially several turns to draw out of the a soft lock if they didn't draw a shock/basic/dork heavy hand.
Think about how oppressive leonin arbiter and aven minscensor can be - now stick it on a walker that doesn't die to bolt with GY hate (sometimes repeatable) tacked onto it.
This could have been an enchantment with only the static effect and I would have raised an eyebrow. It's easier to remove than enchantment via damage and combat, but I think the GY hate makes up for it.
Alternatively, for 3 mana UR Phoenix gets to flashback 2 spells and return all their birds to play
This may be the card that pushes them to action...
Card seems great in burn. For 3 mana you get to bolt and spike someone again, after that you start slinging crap like searing blaze and boros charm a second time. Seems gross :(.
So the new Karn, the Great Creator lools good. It was officialy spoiled. I do not feel bad talking about it.
You include it in your tron deck. What are the sideboard cards you include spesifically to be searched up with him? The big easy winn is mycosyth latice. Latice + Karn = Your opponent can't tap lands for mana. We know Tron rocks 10 mana spells allready.
But what when you only have 7 mana? I thibk Ensnaring Bridge is good. Keeps you safe. Evebtually you winn.
I like the 4th Oblivion Stone in the wishboard, and I'd prioritize it over everything but Mycosynth Lattice (face it: 4-mana tutors are slow as heck, so if you still want to play one, it had better search for a game winner). O. Stone (and its cousin Perilous Vault) wipes the board and therefore covers the Karn Lattice combo's weakness to attackers.
One of Wurmcoil and Walking Ballista is probably fine as the lone threat in the wishboard. Wurmcoil can gain life, while Ballista can wipe boards.
I think Witchbane Orb is a decent option for those times you need Burn/combo hate fast or you don't quite think Karn GC will survive.
It's hard for Gx Tron to dip to 1 or fewer cards in hand, from my experience, so I don't think Ensnaring Bridge is a good idea.
New karn plus liquimetal coating is repeatable land destruction every turn. Could be brutal against the mirror.
tormond's crypt could be a better wishboard target over relic because you can fire it off the turn you land him. A whole turn could be a world of difference against dredge/Phoenix, especially if you don't have tron online yet and need the answer now.
You could t3 tron to play new karn and fetch up a trinnisphere to slow your opponent down.
The card is legit. Not I'm going to have a busted game of magic like hollow one or arclight Phoenix legit, but it's good lol.
The new Saheeli looks like it can make Phoenix decks even stronger.
I just posted the same thing in the saheeli thread actually lol. She seems just straight up great out of the sideboard.
What I think is particularly interesting is how much discussion the set is generating with 3-4+ cmc cards. Overall I think that's a big win for modern. Although to me it signals that the format may be slowing down in an attempt to do more powerful things - especially post board.
really wish Neoform was instant so could hold up other interaction or use it in response to removal, ah well probably too good in the standard card pool. i agree that its a hard card to evaluate. the dork -> neoform -> incubation druid interaction is promising, the same goes for being able to search up 2 growth-chamber guardian; and got me thinking about UGx elves where your targets are all in the 1-3 cmc range. havent done anything with my elves deck in a while, so here's to hoping.
as for massacre girl, i dunno about constructed playability, but i really like the mechanical flavor. how the effect can just snowball with each subsequent trigger.
I think instant speed neoform for a reclamation sage to blow up a juicy target, or frilled mystic to counter something relevant, or even steel leaf champion to eat up an attacker. These would have been too good for standard at consistent instant speed plus pump, and that's staying even in tribe.
I would have liked to see it instant for modern, but I don't think it would have been modern playable even at instant imho. The best things you're going to get are probably hatebears from a bant shell and chord already does this around the same timeframe for a 2 drop.
Tons of combos and then karn+coating or abrade+coating controls the board. This is where I'll be starting and this is rough draft. Two different Combos as early as t3 and you can technically have rebuke or apostles up to protect the combo.

Path becomes hard exile removal for W. ghost quarter or techtonic edge strengthen the lock.

I don't see any walkers that make me dread them in modern just yet. The format won't care about most of them
