Raptorchan - Fitting to bookend the contest with another member of the same household staff as your original legend. Good flavor text to explain the ability, which makes about as much flavor sense as any token-specific ability can. The whole thing feels slightly off in monoblack, though, and might be too oppressive at its cost against certain decks. 7
Forestsguy - Interesting Chandra's Ignition variant that's a bit hard to use but pays dividends in wrathing the board. Instant speed makes this pretty potent but also requires you to have an attacker that can survive the toughness dip. Flavor text is worth a chuckle. The whole thing very much feels like an in-character spell, but it's not the most original design. 7.5
And with that, Forestsguy narrowly wins the first edition of the Boss Rush! Congrats, and thanks to everyone for playing and making this a fun contest for me. I had a lot of hard judging decisions to make, especially this last round, and I think overall everyone submitted good designs. It's interesting how the final two contestants share the same colors, and I hope there's an even more diverse crop of legends the next time around (even though planeswalkers and old characters were allowed, no one made either, although I liked all of your original-character legends).
They'll have to face the final opponent... or rather, opponents - coming from an unknown plane...
Xasumorric Rí1WUBRG
Legendary Creature - Avatar Knight (M)
At the beginning of your upkeep, create up to one of the following 5/5 legendary Avatar Knight creature tokens: Azcaloth, Bedrek, Canhouss, Dawtian, or Esplome. Azcaloth is white and has vigilance, Bedrek is blue and has hexproof, Canhouss is black and has lifelink, Dawtian is red and has menace, and Esplome is green and has trample.
5/5
Forestsguy - Interesting Aether Snap variant; this doesn't strike me as an effect that would have red added to it normally, but it seems fun. Turning counters and tokens into fuel just makes intuitive sense. The outdated wording confused me at first. 8
Raptorchan - This would have to be printed in a special set such as Commander as +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters can't normally coexist. I've seen many variants on this idea before and this is pretty reasonable. I do like the incorporation of Vampire-type flavor. 7
Mergatroid_Jones - I'm not really getting from the flavor why this card self-multiplies. I also think it's a bit busy and trying to do too much. 6.5
It was a close call but ultimately it's Mergatroid_Jones who narrowly loses their breath first and is forced out of the arena by Kerishvad.
They'll have to contend with this next boss, a powerful being embodying the tenacity of the last Abzan clan members on Tarkir:
Kerishvad, Amber of Ancestries3WBG
Legendary Creature - Plant Avatar Warrior (M) T: Put the top card of your library into your graveyard. If it's a creature card, put a +1/+1 counter Kerishvad on and each creature you control that shares a name with that creature.
Each creature you control with one or more +1/+1 counters on it gets +2/+2.
Each creature you control with three or more +1/+1 counters on it has indestructible and lifelink.
5/5
In addition, Kerishvad has brought two of these followers with him:
Fortress WandererG
Creature - Human Warrior (R) 3WB: Target Warrior you control gains double strike and menace until end of turn.
2/1
Forestsguy - This design is narrow and overcosted, and one of those things that seems unplayable even in Limited, but at the same time, I can't resist the flavor callback. 5.5
Raptorchan - Does this design truly not exist yet? Circle of Flame comes close; this is a significant upgrade but that's what you get for 1 higher CMC and rare; the flavor is spot-on. 8
Mergatroid_Jones - Kind of a busy card but I oddly like Auras like this; reminds me in a strange way of Keldon Mantle. All that combat manipulation is definitely good against a combat-focused legend. 7
RaikouRider - "Have the Dragon burn them" is a pretty unoriginal approach to the challenge even if it's in-character, and we've clearly seen Ace can be less on-the-nose. Also, this is a bit too close to a major Sparktongue Dragon upgrade for me to give many (or any) points for originality. 4.5
Unfortunately, Eni-Laazkan relentlessly chases RaikouRider and they're forced to flee the arena. Three left, and they'll face the next boss very soon!
They'll be taking on the third boss, a Shivan Manticore with savage mastery of the landscape:
Eni-Laazkan2RR
Legendary Creature - Manticore (R)
Flying R, Discard a land card: Add CC. Spend this mana only to activate abilities. 1, Sacrifice a Mountain: Eni-Laazkan gets +1/+0 and loses flying until end of turn. Up to one target creature blocks Eni-Laazkan this turn if able.
3/3
Subject16 - This is quite the swingy card - autowinning combat against the correct tribe, being quite weak for its cost otherwise. I think customizable but narrow-band tribal hosers like this could be necessary in certain formats like EDH but something about the flavor of poisons that only work against exactly one species (or profession!) is both a well-tread high fantasy theme and somehow very "off." 6.5
Raptorchan - A Spider Skeleton might look kind of odd in art - that would actually be an exoskeleton, right? Looking up "umkovu" didn't help matters because in IRL mythology (Bantu myth, I think?) it's just a word for undead that doesn't directly have to do with Spiders. Anyway the triggered ability is really niche but interesting, although I think it makes the card lean way more green than it does red. I just love the idea of a guard-Spider for an upper class mansion that generally prevents funny business. 7
Forestsguy - A neat and splashy card, but one that gives you a lot of tokens and triggers to bookkeep. I'm a sucker for the death-trigger Devil token, however, and the flavor text made me laugh out loud. The name is very good too. 7.5
Mergatroid_Jones - This is a card that does a lot and gets the job done for sure. The rhyme-talk flavor text is both grating (in-universe) and somewhat growing on me. I'm not sure haste, though, is the right mechanic to manipulate both for flavor and for general utility as a combat trick. 7
RaikouRider - I had to check to make sure this card didn't exist already. It's very strong if you can generate a lot of R (no help from Rosheen Meanderer) but I get a good Jund feel from it and it works for the challenge, even if it's fairly generic (it is indeed adapted to someone who's good at fighting creatures but has relative low toughness, though, so points for that). 7
Obviously this was a very close round. However, it was Subject16 who was ultimately too battered by the strength of the Nyxborn colossus Tarkassos to continue and had to leave the arena. Thanks for playing and congrats to those who remain, who'll have to take on the next boss very shortly...
They'll go up against the second boss, a gigantic and terrifying servant of the goddess Pharika:
Tarkassos the Insensible4GGG
Legendary Enchantment Creature - Giant (R)
This spell can't be countered.
Trample
If a creature without trample would deal any amount of damage, it deals 1 damage instead.
8/4
Cantripmancer - This is such an abstract name that it's hard to quite tell if it's in flavor for your character or not. They do appear to be a nature mage so there is that. The secondary effect is EXTREMELY niche and technical and it just feels like a "designed to narrowly pass a challenge" card. Some flavor text would have really helped. 5
Subject16 - The most out-there design. Arthropod is kind of bizarre in execution (BLINKMOTH?) but ultimately the card is splashy, flavorful, and kinda makes me wanna build this deck. 8
Mergatroid_Jones - This feels like the opposite problem: A hoser that's too broad-spectrum for the challenge. You could technically have submitted it for ANYTHING and it would have been "fitting." It's also worryingly strong, being almost as good as Nevermore for a lesser cost, putting it at (or maybe above?) a Meddling Mage level. I wasn't sure if I could imagine your character using this but the flavor text sold me. 5.5
Forestsguy - This is a lot of and maybe a too-busy design but ultimately a fun splashy effect that's (maybe too closely/obviously?) in flavor with your character. Also do enjoy just how effectively the hosing works mechanically. 6.5
RaikouRider - An absolutely wild card; I guess this was an intentional Volcano Hellion (and Glorybringer?) riff and it accomplishes the hose in a mechanical but unobtrusive way. An obviously strong but restrictive legend that might be some sort of sideboard tool for Reanimator. And of course a Dragonmaster can summon a Dragon. 8
Raptorchan - Extremely neat flavor with a non-combatant aspect. Good use of Helm of the Host tech. While making a dual Heat Shimmer might be developmentally problematic and derivative, the card looks fun outside of oppressive combos. 7
Unfortunately, one contestant has been overwhelmed by the Juggernauts and forced to flee the arena in order to survive. Cantripmancer, you have been eliminated - thanks for playing. Congrats to all the others and the next boss will arrive early tomorrow.
Are we supposed to make it plain removal or combat tricks are allowed? Do we know how they attack or block or should we force them to do so?
If you want, you can assume the boss and any associated creatures are attacking you. However, you can make any kind of permanent or instant/sorcery thay would either mechanically or flavorfully "stop" the boss.
The first boss you'll be facing is a mechanical monster from Tidehollow.
Zedagh, of Dual Filigree5UB
Legendary Artifact Creature - Juggernaut (M)
Haste, prowess
When Zedagh enters the battlefield, create a 4/5 blue and black Juggernaut Twin artifact creature token with haste and prowess.
Whenever Zedagh or a Juggernaut Twin you control dies, at the beginning of your next upkeep, if you control the other one, return Zedak from your graveyard to the battlefield if it died or create a 4/5 blue and black Juggernaut Twin artifact creature token with haste and prowess if a Juggernaut Twin died.
4/5
Defeat this creature by any means you see fit. You have 48 hours from now.
Forestsguy - Interesting Chandra's Ignition variant that's a bit hard to use but pays dividends in wrathing the board. Instant speed makes this pretty potent but also requires you to have an attacker that can survive the toughness dip. Flavor text is worth a chuckle.
