The deck can't run enough control elements with how hellbent everyone is on playing everying as low to the ground as possible to avoid every board wipe, though, which is why I like Mutavault. Having that there as a backup after opponents board wiped on their turn has several times allowed me to get Yuriko back onto the battlefield attacking and getting triggers a turn sooner than I would have otherwise. In my testing it's been worth it. It doesn't need evasion because the reason I play it generally means there's nothing to block it, anyway, and it's another trigger if there's no blockers out otherwise.
@Artaud, yeah, being able to hit with Yuriko after, is hard. Usually, my plan is to turn all my evasive creatures into Ninjas, so I don't have to bother attacking with Yuriko.. Although sometimes you're lucky, and someone is open; or you have a Shizo, Death's Storehouse, Thassa, God of the Sea, Cover of Darkness, etc.
@Klezam, have you considered Teferi's Veil? I run that in my Deck, and it's actually saved my team from board clears/removal a few times, and it's not really a priority Target, compared to all of the other busted Enchantments I run (like Arcane Adaptation)
I'm most likely going to cut Higure, it's never NOT been a dead Card (and the only thing I've ever done with it, is Imprint it on a Chrome Mox.. 'xD) It's too expensive, and all it does is potentially Tutor for Creatures.. which I don't really see ever being relevant outside of being in a situation where you're really behind (otherwise I'd rather just Ninjutsu in Yuriko to get some Triggers.)
Convince me not to. >:P
(I'll probably put in Standardize, since I want to test it out; it's THE most tutorable, and cheapest, multiple Trigger enabler, and can potentially be a blow-out if no one expects it. Might put in Viscera Seer, as well. Maybe cut the Cruise?)
Just my 2 cents, but I don't think you have nearly enough mana sources, I'd play at least another 4 lands. Especially considering how mana intensive ninjutsu tends to be.
I think the Mana is fine, especially with how many ways to rearrange the top of the Deck we have, as well as how low our curve is; I've never had a shortage of Mana, and most times I actually end up with A LOT (especially if Lotus Vale survives.)
Personally I don't think cramming the alternative cost cards and split cards are really that great. Limiting yourself to those cards to max out damage I find is less efficient than playing good cards and getting the incidental extra damage. Mostly glaring at Consign // Oblivion, Treasure Cruise and Temporal Trespass.
I don't see what's glaring about a Time Walk for 3 Mana that can also ping the table for 11.. Consign is basically an un-Overloaded Cyclonic Rift; the Deck can struggle with having [non-Creature] Removal (it can also remove a Blocker in a pinch,) so getting it in anyway is nice, especially since it has the utility of pinging for 8 and potential extra value out of the Grave (Commit // Memory is really nice in all of those regards.)
Though I am on the fence about Treasure Cruise, since having so many Delve Cards could be an issue, but I've not come into a scenario where I disliked Cruise too much.. (It's good for rebuilding after a wipe, or for trying to dig a way out.)
As for alternate cost Cards, you can't tell me that Force of Willisn't a good Card.. Let alone in THIS Deck. ESPECIALLY when the Mana Curve and Land count is as low as it is, we don't have the Mana to cast things without alternative costs.. Cards like Commandeer and Snuff Out put in A LOT of work in the Deck.
I get what you want to do with the emerge (get a cost reduction from ninjutsu and then the reduction from emerge). I really don't think I want to be sacking ninjas though. Yuriko makes each one of them super valuable.
Emerge isn't there to sac your other Ninjas, but to sac Yuriko, for when you don't HAVE any other Ninjas or Enchantments making everything a Ninja, so that you can Ninjutsu Yuriko again to get a Trigger (off a "Ninja Enabler.") The only one I have in my Deck presently, is the Scuttler, which I am on the fence about, honestly (though there are situations where it can be an out/win-con, ie. infinitely recurring Time Warp.)
@dachivale, Phyrexian Tower is great if one can afford it, since it puts you AHEAD Mana, compared to High Market. And I think you should definitely get Blinkmoth into your Deck, it has been invaluable in my experience; having an Enabler that practically "Phases" itself out (dodges Sorcery speed removal/wipes,) and is free to replay, especially when Land drops are light (I can usually put it back into play MP2; in that sense it's like an Ornithopter that Taps for Mana!)
@D3eadcalm, I'm not entirely sure what'd be the best Doomsday pile, but I think it'd definitely have a Putrid Imp as a Discard outlet for Nexus of Fate (not to mention it can double as a "Ninja Enabler" in a pinch.)
One thing I dislike, and have found myself in the situation many times, is having to Tutor.. FOR a Tutor.. o_0 (Spellseeker/Mystical->Demonic/Diabolic, JUST SO that I can get an Arcane Adaptation effect into my Hand..) I'd be tempted to run Unnatural Selection, if having extra Mana to be able to pay for the activation wasn't a problem (Mana usage can be really tight, even when you manage to get to 7+.)
I've had a few wins with the Deck so far, most, if not all, of my losses were to super Competitive Decks (so I feel like Yuriko is a lot more competitive than I originally expected, but definitely not "Turn 3" material; what's nice about Yuriko, is that opponents don't feel bad losing to it, since it has interaction/"needs" Opponents, whereas most cEDH Decks just.. "play with themselves," lol.)
We were all losing to the Meren player who had a ton of Lands, Meren, Ashnod's, and even a Palakka Wurm to gain life.. And there was an Arcadis player with a bunch of Walls.. Life totals were rather high-ish. My only hope to shut down the Arcadis player, was to use the Hypnotic Siren I had ninjutsu'd back to my hand earlier in the game, with the sole goal of stealing Arcadis permanently..
BUT, I miscounted my Ninjas and thus thought I had more Yuriko triggers than I expected, so when I put an Island 4th from the top via an Owl, I expected to have it... So I was 1 Land short of casting the Siren for many turns.. lol. So without being able to steal Arcadis.. that player attacked me with most of his Walls, dropping me down all the way to 1.. (Ironically I drew a Vampiric Tutor, which I couldn't even cast without killing myself.. lol.) So, expecting to die, I just wanted to do as much damage with Yuriko as I could, so I swung with all my dudes, and then did some Brainstorming with the triggers on the stack, but after much waffling, I decided NOT to do as much damage as possible (since the player with the most life was the Arcadis player who tried to kill me, so I didn't want to kill the other players, to give them a chance to kill the Arcadis player instead.. ;P)
So, my dudes were protected by Teferi's Veil because I attacked, Yuriko only hit for like 5 Damage, and the Meren player cast Damnation clearing Arcadis' board, then recast Meren (I guess he forgot to attack me with Meren first? lol.) Arcadis player just recasts their Commander and passes. I FINALLY draw that Island I had mistakenly put too far from the top and can finally make good on my promise to make him "regret attacking me." >:P So I Bestow Hypnotic Siren stealing Arcadis, aaaand.. he scoops. Other Opponent who was Manascrewed all game also scoops to speed things up.
Now it's just me, and Meren. Meren player attacks with Meren to force me to chump my Yuriko so it goes back to Command Zone, tries to cast a Pernicious Deed to clear my board, which I Commandeer (pitching a Nexus of Fate, of all things) and brings back a Caustic Caterpillar (I assume to get rid of Arcane Adaptation which makes my dudes Ninjas.) So now it's my turn, I cast Time Warp, no responses, attack, Ninjutsu Yuriko. Pass the turn.. to myself. Snapcaster+Timewarp, lol. I attack with Yuriko and another "Ninja," they chump block 1, but NOT both (not sure why, maybe they wanted a Blocker for my turn after that?) But it didn't matter, because I lucked out and "topdecked" a Treasure Cruise flip off of Yuriko, hitting them for 8, when they were at 7!
Now that I think back, the "mistake" of putting the Island that far down, actually led to this chain of events that resulted in the Arcadis players' board being cleared, and freeing up the potential for psychological damage forcing them to scoop.. That mistake may have won me the game? lol.
PS. I feel like I might need more Sac Outlets for Yuriko, for when I don't have an AA effect. Maybe I should cut Higure for a Cavern Harpy or Viscera Seer (tempted to get Viscera Seer, since I could sac her in response to steal effects.)
The only thing I've ever done with Higure in the games I had him in Hand.. (Even with AA on Board) Was to Exile him to Commandeer.. 'xD
Teferi's Veil has been really nice, for protecting my crew from Damnations (even Fleshbags) and such; while it doesn't protect things right away, and can feel pointless when you drop it, it's an insurance policy that can pay for itself when you need it most.
Blinkmoth is amazing, period. As is Hypnotic Siren (the only 1-CMC Enabler I run other than Stormtamer.) Being able to Ninjutsu early-game, then Bestow to steal a Commander, nearly permanently if they struggle to deal with Enchantments, is a HUGE blowout!
(Edit: I'm trying to post something else, but it keeps saying "temporarily unable to post non latin unicode characters.. But I'm not using any?? o_0)
I had a really insane turn where I tutored for a Force, flashed in a Snapcaster to Brainstorm and put a Temporal Mastery on top of my Deck (under another Card that'd be pulled with Yuriko, since she doesn't trigger Miracle,) Ninjutsu'd Student to copy a Cloud of Faeries to make it free, ALL while being in response to a Yuriko trigger.. lol.
Still lost though, because Nevinyral's Disc is op (and we were only battling for 2nd, anyway, since we'd already lost to Storm the Turn before.. 'xD)
Hypnotic Siren is amazing imo; it was a crucial piece for me to get an early Ninjutsu in, and then being able to Bestow it on my Opponents Commander knowing they were a Color that struggled w/ that.. (Sadly the Hypnotic got Countered, and we ultimately lost to his Commander making him go infinite.. It was Momir.)
So far I don't feel like it's too overpowered, and definitely not CEDH material. As for how casual it is, I'd say it's closer to competitive.. I think it might be slightly weaker than my main Muldrotha Deck (albeit with a lot more interaction and protection, and possibly even faster in the right circumstance.. Will have to play some more to find out.) But I have been having a blast with it so far.
I played the deck today and only once, but it won by taking 4 extra turns in a row. I was so very flabbergasted by how it won (not in a good way) that I opted not to play the deck the rest of the evening.
Why were you flabbergasted in a bad way? (That sounded awesome..)
I'm wondering if 3 Fetches, or 2, is the right number.. Kinda want to squeeze River of Tears in (because it's pretty, and helps casting Nether Traitor early).. (or a 7th Island.)
My Deck is almost "finalized," but I want to squeeze Cavern Harpy in somehow.. (is it worth it?) These are the Cards on the chopping block:
Yeah, it needs another Land that Taps for multiple Mana, my bad. But it DOES work with a Mistblade Shinobi.
Possible uses I see for this:
Steal infinite ETBs from Opponents' Creatures (or your own, like, say, Spellseeker? Could potentially even build your own Doomsday like this, I imagine.)
Ramp into enough Mana to Cast Nexus of Fate (or even Rift?)
Ramp into Silent-Blade Oni a bit sooner (Elder Deep-Fiend?)
Honestly, after goldfishing a bit.. I feel like Ornithopter is invaluable to add speed and tempo to the Deck.
(Now I just need to make room for it somehow..)
PS. I ran into an interesting scenario where Sakashima's Student and Yuriko, can create potentially infinite Mana in the Combat Step with a Lost Vale, another Land that Taps for more than 1 Mana (or a Mistblade Shinobi,) and Cloud of Faeries on the Board.. 'xD
How do you guys feel about Bident of Thassa..? Seems like Drawing a ton of extra Cards would be nice.. But 4CMC IS pretty high, and our Commander is already a Card Draw Engine.. (It can also potentially be used to open up a path to swing in uninhibited.)
PS. (@plushpenguin, I don't think you updated your main post deck list w/ the -trition +stalker.)
I'd like Vexing Scuttler a lot more if it didn't require 12 mana and a way to get in for damage to go infinite with...
Isn't it 10 Mana (provided you have a Land drop for your 2nd Turn?) 2 to Ninjutsu, 5 to Warp (7 Mana).. next Turn: Land Drop, 4 to Emerge, 2 to Ninjutsu, 5 to Warp (11 Mana.)
If Vexing isn't being cut, would Archaeomancer come back, or no?
I think running Borderpost is making the mistake of running subpoor cards in order to make more damage per attack, but I hate taplands with a passion. It's never a mox because it costs mana and won't make 2 mana turn 1
If you have no Land drop for the Turn, you can Tap a Basic, use that Mana for Borderpost's Ability, return the Basic to Hand, and then play it from Hand as your Land drop for Turn. So.. it's effectively a Mox that enters Tapped?
Btw, I'm toying around with River of Tears, but it should probably just be another Island.. lol. (But it's SO PRETTY!)
Is Key to the City better than Thassa or Writ of Passage? I wouldn't think so.. I'd originally cut the Key for Thassa, but now I'm not sure.. The Scry isn't entirely useless though, since you can bottom expensive Cards you may not need.
