When you're not trading blows, the vanguard is better than the avenger by a tad, yes? I have no problem with testing the card. If your opponent was to start stabilizing vs your aggro deck with removal spells, this card is better by a lot.
I, once, boarded in a lone black honden to guarantee that I would beat the deck that would beat me with counterspells specifically, but I think thats a bad gameplan.
Why have Porcelain legionnaire, the best red 2 drop, in white?
or
Why not move them to colorless without displacing other colorless cards

Skyspawner isn't worth a blink target very much at all. getting an eldrazi scion isn't really value worth pairing with a glimmerpoint stag (to make up for glimmerpoint stag being a below-rate body that needs value) and definitely not worth something like actual momentary blink outside of specific circumstances.
But being able to skip a turn on mana while getting a relevant early-game body is pretty ridiculous.
Two things
Skyspawner is part of basically every archetype, as one of the most flexible 3 drop creatures we have access to in any color. Also, spined thopter is essentially a colorless card.
I think io is right about being overly bullish on chart a course. The further I get away from the day it was spoiled the more I imagine not being able to trigger raid on the turn I need to draw the cards, and the opportunity cost of having a draw spell in hand is real
Nobody is worried about the power level of a card that lets you sac your whole board all at once if all you're getting is an until eot stat buff.
But turning some token generator into fat stacks of cards has to cost a lot. Since the knave provides two different upsides, and those two upsides are reeeaallly strong, 1B is definitely undercosted. Imagine turn four, sac two guys, turn 5 have access to potentially 9 mana.
I really want to retry rite again. The new guy can play better as an aggro topper I imagine, but I always had a sneaking suspicion that Rite was better than it played out.

Devoted druid is completely bananas, and I find my biggest moment of shame was cutting it like 3years ago like a dummy.
Don't be like me
(In that regard)
I don't understand why they'd make a 3mana version where you just get one toughness.
