Andrew Baeckstrom's list has no rhyme or reason to me.. Manamorphosex3 without kiln fiend, MD Rampager, MD Ranger of Eos, 2 bolts in the SB(?!?!). Maybe someone smarter than I can explain to me..
Although I must say that I dig the SB Grim Lavamancers.
Instants can sometimes be the most difficult card type to get into the graveyard when it comes to enabling delirium due to the fact that all our instants need specific targets before we can cast them. Manamorphose can be cast at any time, doesn't cost us any mana and offers an additional way to burn through our deck.
I think it's a very interesting card, I just wouldn't feel too happy cutting Decays for it. Maindeck Ghor-Clan and Ranger are a bit more perplexing to me... but I also do like that Grim Lavamancer in the sb.
Been testing a singleton Forest in the maindeck and a Surgical Extraction in the side. Both were good to me today, went 3-1 at the LGS losing to Abzan (as if there's any other way), but I still put up a decent fight. Love this deck to death.
yea i get that. but at that point we just go back to tarfire right?

that's a fair point - it does make theoretical sense in that a mentor can win the game very quickly by himself with the deck's density of 1cmc spells and it's not unreasonable to be holding discard spells/kill spells when you topdeck a mentor in the late game grindfest to get immediate value. I do like the added benefit of attacking on a different axis than goyfs/traverse/half of souls vs. GY hate
3-1 at 24-man FNM, beat GW, Coco, Abzan (!!!) and lost to nut draws from Revolt Zoo, felt helpless.
Really uninterested in Staticaster and Ranger lately - LTLH has been pulling her weight more in grindy matchups. What are you guys running as far as unconventional sideboard tech goes?
I've been off staticaster - my position is that if you have Lingering Souls in your 75, it's not needed, and the only major place you'd really miss it is as a traverse target for Storm. I'd prefer Ranger to be Hazoret, but I also want to be able to keep Stubs in vs. control decks, so it's a pickle. Having access to a different non-red Traversable haymaker would be nice. Tireless Tracker is an idea I haven't tried because I didn't think we'd trigger it enough. But maybe it's worth a shot. Thrun also has some upside, but you're basically never traversing for and casting him in the same turn.
how about young pyro/mentor as standalone threats? as in the list below, for example for a 5c shell (although not having souls feels wrong)
Its hard to say without knowing if he knows about the lili. If he doesn't know about the lili you definitely don't traverse for land. It would be correct for him to gurmag before removal in that case so its still very likely he has removal spells in hand and you're going to need more threats.
If you're on lingering souls/ranger you can afford to go a bit longer which makes lili slightly more attractive. But if not cards trade pretty interchangeably in this matchup so you plusing to discard your decay/push isnt' actually great. Next turn if he has any decent hand he's either going to be playing a shadow or playing a removal spell, and in both those cases your covered by not traversing for a land so i think its okay to wait.
Thanks, I really felt like I had made a mistake immediately after casting Traverse for the land. Had to realize what matters in the matchup, which isn't speed but threats/answers
What would you guys do here (pretending traverse was not cast yet)? I feel like because I haven't had a lot of midrange experience I'm prone to making marginal mistakes that ends up costing me later on.
I had two streams of thoughts: 1. traverse for a shockland, terminate Gurmy, and ensure liliana can come down next turn and take over the game, or 2. this matchup will be all about attrition, and you are not in a hurry. Therefore, just terminate Gurmy, hope to draw a land in the next bit and convert Traverse into another threat and cast Liliana naturally.
mashup of grixis and jund 5-0ing yesterday. this seems like it'd struggle in grindy matchups, nor does it help vs. eldrazi/tron/mirror. still interesting though if we are expecting combo-centric decks in the meta?
