It's funny because usually it's the other way around, first online, then paper.
But yeah, 3 Ooze main , 2 Spellbomb, 1 Surgical and 2 Anger in the side and we should be fine. Remember Chill can be removed by Scooze on the stack.
I am fine having 1 slot in my sideboard dedicated to grindy matchups only.
Dredge is definitely the flavour of the month and is likely to stay given the power of Creeping Chill. People will probably include even more gravehate and combo will most likely also rise in order to fight Dredge so be prepared for that scenario.
Even though it might worse our aggro matchup and improve our outs against Field of Ruin, I strongly believe that Mountain is not what this deck needs. I am currently on 4 basics and in order to improve my aggro matchup I decided to include 1 Collective Brutelity in the mainboard (alongside 2 in the side). The card is amazing against Spirits, Burn and other aggro matchups, and does a decent job against combo, control and midrange. I see many people play with 1 Push or 1 Decay as their Flex slot, but with a playset of Trophy (I might be the only person on earth to play 4 in Jund), i diminsih not only my chances of a bad cascade target, but also have a very versatile 2 drop in my maindeck.
Edit: I also play Nissa in the sideboard and can confirm that she is excellent against control/other grindy matchups.
Talking about Nissa, I can only give you my experience from legacy. She is amazing against control (and especially Jace/Teferi) mostly because people don't expect her. I wouldn't worry about her cmc as getting to 5 lands is never a problem against Ux decks, no matter whether playing 24 or 25 lands.
2nd Push might be a strong meta choice against Spirits/Humans but I am convinced that Pulse is the better card against Scales if you worry about that matchup. I think having 11 cmc 1 spells is enough (mostly because in my meta I have to board out push extremely often), but again, I can see the circumstances in which you might want a 2nd push in the mainboard.
Yeah, Lavamancer on turn 1 is something Spirits and Humans often can't beat in game 1, therefore (and for his many other applications) I like having 1 in the mainboard. I think Humans has become a 45/55 matchup, therefore I decided to give myself an advantage in g1. We currently witness a downfall of Humans, not because the deck has become weaker, but people decide to try out other things (no humans list went 5-0 last week), so I have to see whether he stays in the mainboard but for now I am very happy with the card.
Lavamancer main is a great choice imo, you also play 9 fetches in order to get the max out of him.
24 lands are enough. I am convinced that the deck doesn't need more lands, played some bigger tournaments in September with 24 lands and never felt the necessity of land #25.
I also believe 3 trophies is the ideal number to start with, the card is amazing but you don't want to cast it in the early game apart from the Tron matchup or in some hopeless situations.
So far I have been playing with 2/2 basics, no mountain. But a mountain has definitely some upsides, especially with your sb configuration.
I would absolutely play the 4th BBE over a 3rd K-command. BBE is Jund's best answer against UW and the meta is flooded with control at the moment. 3 K-commands seem unnecessary to me.
I only play 1 push but added 1 pulse beacause I still like the versatility of the card against tokens etc and it can often be the 4th trophy. Lavamancer and last hope make 2nd push not as important anymore imo.
This league showed a lot of Jund's current weaknesses. He was simply too often dependent on his topdeck, but he also had some unlucky draws, especially R1 and 2.
Guys, there is a new Jund video available by Reid Duke in which he lowered his curve and tried some new things. It is not listed on Youtube (don't ask me why) but here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSE9oA2utso
I would turn that Mountain into a 4th Cliffs, the Brutality into a 4th Lili. Apart from that I like the mainboard, the decision to play only 2 BBEs is the way to go and makes the most sense at the moment.
LtLH and K-Command were just two examples of flexible and cheaper options compared to BBE. My point is, you can't survive with a midrange deck in this meta if you don't start interacting on turn 1. Look at yesterdays top 8, there was not a single deck where BBE really shines. When Control and Midrange finally come back (I am convinced they will, because Modern is constantly changing), I would also suggest playing 3 or 4 BBE again, but I can't justify it now when looking at the amount of unfair and uninteractive decks.
I would even cut another BBE, adding a second K-Command or moving LtLH to the mainboard. Keeps the grindy element of the deck, lowers the curve and makes your openers less awkward.
Like I already said, matchups like Storm or Humans are not as good as they have once been. Yes, Müller got lucky in R3 but that doesn't change the fact that the deck became clunkier after the unbans. And clunkiness is the last thing you want from your deck in these matchups.
I have been playing this exact list (apart from a single Treetop Village) for the last month or so, and it felt underwhelming to be honest. I don't know which direction the deck needs to take in order to function properly. I disagree with Hellkite and EctoMark when they say that the deck is well positioned in the current meta. It is a solid tier 2 deck, nothing more, nothing less.
Yes, the unban of Bloodbraid Elf helped the deck. Why? There was a hype around the card, many players were playing the Elf, some had moderate success with the deck (as it will always be when a lot of players are on the same deck).
Another aspect was the unban of Jace. People were hyping control and man, BBE is an incredible powerhouse against control. I would go as far as claiming that control has become Jund's best matchup since the unbans thanks to the raw power of BBE. But people stopped playing control once they realized Jace is not a superhero, but just a 4cmc PW which who is often not more than a Brainstorm at sorcery speed. That's the nature of modern. Both Jace and BBE are powerful, but they get outclassed.
Now, what am I seeing at local game stores, at GP's and on the SCG Tour? Aggro, Combo and Big Mana.
Yes, BBE made the Tron matchup better, but let's not fool ourselves, this is still a very bad matchup.
How do the new Jund lists fight against aggressive decks like Humans, Affinity or Burn? They feel clunky (even the list with 12 one drops, I can't imagine how the pushless versions feel like), and the main problem is you don't know what you get when casting a 4 mana spell.
Casting a BBE against control is always fine because it doesn't matter what extra card you get, it is always at least a slight advantage (especially postbaord, when dead cards get boarded out) against a slow and reactive opponent, but against aggro you need specific answers and a 3/2 body for 4 mana with an additional effect against a deck like Humans is not strong enough.
I don't want BBE against Storm either, nor do I like her against Burn.
There are still other midrange decks played, but I don't think Jund is outclassing Ponza or Mardu. Yes, Jund is very good against Shadow decks, but they are currently not at the top of the meta.
What I wanted to say with this post is that I don't like BBE against a lot of the current top decks. Playing four is probably still the way to go in Jund because there are matchups where she is very good, but I don't think she excels in the current meta. Aggressive decks are taking over the Modern format, and Jund always used to be the control deck against these decks. BBE doesn't allow us to take this strategy, and that's why I believe the deck is currently in a bizarre situation: The one card everyone wanted back got unbanned, but it doesn't help beating the best decks in the format.
After having read all the comments from the last few days, I have to admit that I really like the idea of the 3rd Ooze in the sideboard. I would have never come to that idea by myself, but that's the advantage of discussing in a forum like this.
Anyway, here is my updated decklist, which I will be playing tomorrow:
If I see an uptick in Humans, I will add a 2nd Lavamancer to the sideboard instead of the Last Hope.
Artifact decks are not played an awful lot at my store currently, but I will always respect these decks. Therefore I am not going to cut a Grudge anytime soon.
I have been playing with 2 Spellbombs for quite some time now and they have never disappointed me. Leyline is a card I have not been a big fan of outside
Legacy.
