Curious for those who've played this deck more...if ancient stirrings gets banned does RG version just stop being relevant or can it reinvent itself a bit like death shadow did with probe ban? I was looking around and most people still want/predict stirrings banned if anything in an upcoming banlist update
The deck would take a big hit since Stirrings is really its main way of direct card advantage and consistency. I'd imagine it would fall out of favor pretty quickly unless Adventurous Impulse can do the work, but seeing 2 cards less is a big deal. I'd say best not to think about it unless it happens, and if you want to talk about the likelihood of a Stirrings ban then head over to the State of Modern thread.
Now I am questioning how to find the cavern against counter dense deck, because it seemed they are extremely hard to beat without. maybe some sylvan scrying somewhere could help. Did anyone try something this way?
I was playing 4 Caverns so I could find them easier, and there really is no drawback since if you play against something not running counters you can use it for Dorks or BBE's to fix your mana. 4 of them plus 4 Ancient Stirrings should be more than enough to find them. Adding things like Sylvan Scrying will dilute the deck from its gameplan. It is how the deck was originally played and it died off hard.
@Torpf congrats on result, the deck looks solid overall. I agree to trim Batterskull doesn't seem strong or fast enough here (awaiting SFM unban in general). Per damping sphere while I do think this is one of the decks it could slide in the easiest one also has to consider how it non-bos with Eldrazi Temple and Bloodbraid Elf. Also crumble on negative side is slow but if it lands basically turns off tron and can also be used against scapeshift. Btw curious why you ran Seal of Primordium over something like Natural State...better synergy with BBE or fear of cards like Chalice and worship?
My reasoning for Damping Sphere is that while it does impact our deck to an extent, it hits decks like Tron, UR Storm, Ad Nauseam, Cheerios, KCI Eggs, etc.. far harder. Getting down some pressure and then dropping the sphere on Turn 3 before they can go off will either slow them down for a turn which could be enough to pull out a win. It's more flexible than Crumble to Dust which is for a very targeted matchup.
As for Seal of Primordium, I wasn't worried about Chalice as it's almost never around my shop. It was more about synergy with BBE and not really worrying about needing Artifact hate on Turn 1. Because I wasn't expecting a lot of Affinity/Lantern/KCI/Boggles I wouldn't say one is more correct than the other. They both do the same job so going with Seal makes it slightly more safe with BBE.
Hi guys! I'm new here!
I recently switch form eldratron to rg. I play the standard list with 4x eldrazi mimic instead of BBE. I think it allows some breacking starts and I don't like that much the elf randomic cascade.
What do you think about her? I saw she is played in almost every list. Do I miss some point?
Bloodbraid Elf is pretty much an auto-include with the deck now. The deck doesn't have much active card advantage, but it does have a lot of inherent card advantage with the Eldrazi creatures. BBE is one of the ways to get card advantage and really overtake the opponent in the midgame. Casting cards for free is always good, so why would you not want to do that? Eldrazi Mimic is good in some cases, and can help for some fast starts, but I'd rather be drawing Bloodbraid Elf anytime after turn 3 than drawing Eldrazi Mimic.
New primer is up. Check it out and let me know what I'm missing in it.
I'm going to slowly add in all of the articles about the deck and videos I can find over the next few days. The deck doesn't have too many variations, so extra cards and stuff isn't really a thing but I added a few anyways. I'll finish some of the formatting then too. Going to try and align all of my primers so they look the same.
Finally played this for the first time with BBE and went 4-0 last night at Modern. I tried to find the VOD of the stream for anyone who wanted to watch but it looks like it wasn't uploaded. My list was pretty stock:
Rounds went as 2-1 vs Death's Shadow, 2-0 vs UW Control, 2-0 vs some Naya Blood Moon brew, and 2-1 vs Mardu Pyromancer. Never really had any problems, I drew well, opponents stumbled at parts, and the deck was overall super consistent. The last time I was playing this heavily I didn't have access to BBE's so finally getting around to playing them really gave the deck a huge boost in power.
Only changes I'd make would probably be -1 Batterskull since there are so manyKolaghan's Commands being played between Pyromancer, DS/Grixis decks, and Jund. I really like it on paper but I just found I couldn't side it in most times and I was find grinding in topdeck mode since most of the cards are 2-for-1's. I'd like to have a bit more assurance vs Burn, so some number of Kitchen Finks would be nice. Dropping the Crumble to Dust for Damping Sphere to combat Tron and Storm (combo in general) is also going to be a good call. Other than that I really liked how well-rounded and flexible the sideboard was. Even without White, there are enough hate cards we can play that are hit by Ancient Stirrings to make the sideboard super consistent.
Will try to play a bit more of the deck in the upcoming weeks. The primer is almost done enough to be posted too.
So is this the new best Eldrazi deck? Is it better than Bant and BW Eldrazi?
At the moment I'd say it's strong contender, but Eldrazi Tron is still probably better. The cool thing about Eldrazi is that they can be paired with pretty much any colour and provide a great creature package for the deck.
On a side note, I am finishing the primer for this thread. I started it like 6 months ago but never finished it because the deck was dead... Is there anything new that should be included other than the obvious stuff? I'll probably just end up posting it then adding stuff later.
I wonder why the deck isn't playing Talisman of Impulse (or more Mind Stone) over the mana dorks to be less vulnerable against early removal spells.
Way back I was playing talismans as a way to ramp, but I was also playing sweepers maineck. I never wanted to play dorks because the sweepers would just kill them, but I was always a turn behind on my ramp because of it. Dorks provide you a mana advantage right from the start, allow for a T2 TKS, and can provide you more coloured mana when you have Caverns and temples in hand. Exalted is also really night on a Reality Smasher as it an attack past Anglers. Removing sweepers to the sideboard and playing dorks in the main is clearly the way to go.
Glad to see interest for the deck is picking up again. I'll make a primer for it in the coming weeks since it will probably see some play now.
EDIT: Well it made top8 at GP Lyon. Looks like I should really make that primer now.... and I probably should have never removed it from Developing Competitive
I remember playing RG Eldrazi quite a while ago...
Mike Sigrist put up an article about a version they played before the PT but tried to keep hidden. Now with Jace going to be entering the format I think it's time to break out the hasty dudes once more. Their list for the PT was this:
Reality Smasher and Eldrazi Obligator are great at flying in and taking out a Jace and adding in Bloodbraid Elf would probably only make that easier. The deck does seem quire well rounded with all of the creatures being big enough to take out most other creatures in the format. Eldrazi Obligator can steal opposing Death's Shadows or Primeval Titans that we can't attack through, and Endbringer is a swiss army knife of reach paired with Lightning Bolt or a card advantage engine. You still get the same possibility of a Turn 2 Thought-Knot Seer as Bant Eldrazi, and by not playing sweepers in the main you keep the dorks around. The deck does seem very well positioned against Affinity, Humans, Burn, and all of the other low to the ground linear aggro decks. Cavern of Souls helps against Blue decks, so it's only the combo or big mana decks that look to be a real problem. Where Bant Eldrazi has the grinding power with Eldrazi Displacer and Drowner of Hope, this deck has a faster clock. A rough draft jamming in BBE could look like this:
Well part of the point of playing RG is for Kozilek's Return. It shores up matchups vs. Abzan Company, Affinity, Infect, Burn, etc... The instant speed is very valuable I've found. Getting to re-use it with World Breaker for what is 99% of the time a full board wipe is super useful too. It is great vs BG/x too because discarding it to a Liliana or Inquisition of Kozilek is great value.
Bonfire of the damned could be good, but it will require tapping out for the turn we Miracle it (which is going to be completely random) meaning we can't keep developing the board on a turn we have say 5 mana for Reality Smasher, and if it ever gets stuck in our hand then it's not going to be as impactful. Although we do ramp, usually 1-2 of that mana is coming from Eldrazi Temple so Bonfire won't be as powerful as just casting huge Eldrazi.
My thoughts, but try it out and see if it is better than I think.
It's a janky topdeck for sure, but a T1 Bird into Eldrazi T2 seems pretty strong to me.
It dies to Kozilek's Return. I thought about running dorks before and tried to find alternatives. If you go back a few pages then you can see what I was talking about. Usually we just want to keep out acceleration alive which is why we run the Talismans or ways to directly get lands. Perhaps that first turn boost is good enough though that we can afford to kill off the dorks. It would mean that World Breaker gets delayed and probably stuck in our hand.
I hope others have been working on this deck. And I been finding the ramp with the Talisman's to be lacking. I took a Magus of the Candelabra as my ramp. Now the deck seems to be as fast as Bant Eldrazi, but without all the clutter and it helps with added land hate. It's also really cool to have turn 2 TKS and turn 3 Smasher. I think I may need to use Endbringer or Mimics over Endless ones, but I think it's a start. And nothing stops a Garruk Ultimate with Eldrazi's.
I also think Beast Within has a lot of merit in the deck as you can potentially turn 2 Beast Within and completely wreck their landbase. And the guys you have are generally bigger than the 3/3 they get, so it's of minor inconvenience.
The thing about Magus of the Candelabra is that he is only working with Eldrazi Temple or Utopia Sprawl to net positive mana. This means that you are playing 4 cards that only do something if you have 1 of your other 8 cards. Those numbers aren't great so you have to ask yourself if it is better than just playing Birds of Paradise. Birds even has the advantage of flying over stuff and Kessig Wolf Run being able to attack under an Bridge from BelowEnsnaring Bridge.
I really want the RG shell to have some turn 1 ramp, but for now I'm skeptical until I test it out.
Hey guys is anyone still playing this deck ? I feel like it is well positioned in this meta but I can't find 60 cards that satisfie me. Have anyone find a list that works ?
I've found the deck to be very meta-specific. Either it overperforms or it gets crushed by the linear decks. Goyfs seem to be a necessary creature now I feel, and it's only because the deck is lacking some real powerhouse like Eldrazi Displacer (and Eldrazi Obligator doesn't make up for that.)
I have been testing this deck a lot on xmage. Played at least 50 matches. Had a ton of success. I dropped the matter reshapers for Eldrazi obligators. I found that with 2 temples and another land the 3/1 with haste taking their creature for a turn is really good. Also turn two 3/1 with haste has been better than matter reshaper. It also makes siding better because I feel I pull my talismans a lot game 2-3 which means less targets for reshaper. I have also been using a 1 of batterskull. Also I notice no lists run a copy of wastes. Against blood moon you can't cast anything very much without a talisman with no wastes.
Would love to know of anyone else is using or has tried Eldrazi obligator.
More talismans fix the Blood Moon problem. I have been very happy with 3 or even 4 of them. Reshapers are great because you get to ramp which the deck desperately needs with trying to get to World Breaker and all, and they are going to die at some point, otherwise they are as effective as the 3/x of Obligator.
On that regard Torpf, do you think we can run as little as 21 lands if we run 4 Talisman? I currently run 23 lands and 2 Talisman. But I still find myself flooding more often than not and on the other hand that turn 2 Talisman can be crucial sometimes, it really is our equivalent of Eye of Ugin. Not to mention, it usually is the only way out of Blood Moon. But since I already have flood issues at 23 lands +2 Talisman, I'm not quite ready to go 23 lands + 4 Talisman...
Oh I defiantly think that going to 4 Talismans isn't a bad idea. 3 At least. You want a T3 TKS as often as you can right? Eldrazi Temple + 2 lands = T3 TKS. Talisman + 3 lands = T3 TKS. This gives you 2 turns to draw the talisman. If you get the T2 talisman then you can still cast an Ancient Stirrings, or Lightning Bolt or Flame Slash which I have found to be really powerful. Imagine this card:
Broken Land V1 2
Sorcery
Put a Karplusan Forest onto the battlefield that is an
Artifact in addition to its other types.
It's like a Farseek or Rampant Growth that cones in untapped! And with Sylvan Scring you can essentially go above '8 Eldrazi lands'. The thing is that we are always getting 4 mana on turn 3 whereas bant Eldrazi can do 4 mana on turn 2. I'd say this deck is more consistent at curving out but Bant is more explosive. If you bolt their doek then you can pull ahead and get a mana advantage. If you can't then they will probably overtake you.
