Long time away from the deck. Recently, I got beaten in a win-and-in at a Modern Staples tournament by a Bant Company list with no Retreat to Coralhelm, which spurned my interest again.
What list do you think is the most successful type of list in today's current meta? I've been playing a lot of GW Company, so I am a bit rusty on casting Collected Company into Spell Queller, but I'm willing to try again. I personally always loved 2 Retreat to Coralhelm and would possibly be willing to try 3 if needed, but what do you think? What's having success now?

I'm actually not sure. I believe that the Vizier Combo is probably stronger right now. I personally haven't tried it because I enjoy the Retreat version too much, although my losses are starting to catch up to me (34-21 now after being 24-9 previously).
If you google Kelvin Chew Vizier Knightfall or Bant Company, something should come up. There's also Humans with Knight of the Reliquary and the Retreat Combo.

Here's the one I've used for a while now. I would switch some cards in the SB and perhaps main for your perceived metagame.
"My list is this, except the 8th mana dork for the 3rd Scavenging Ooze. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/687187#paper
I have recently added 1-2 Rhox War Monk and 1-2 Eidolon of Rhetoric to my maybe list for Storm and Burn, but I just haven't run into them much. "

Would it be inappropriate to ask you folks for tips on beating you? I play Bant Eldrazi, and I've been struggling against Bant Knightfall.
I asked in the Bant Eldrazi discussion, but haven't received a response in a couple of days.
It would be fine.
I haven't played against Bant Eldrazi with Knightfall yet, so I really don't know. I would say just try to keep Knight off the table. Play around Spell Queller if you can, and hope to Smash some Realities. I would put in some SB cards to counter Collected Company. Maybe Engineered Explosives for a 2 drop or mana dorks, although you have to be weary of your own mana dorks of course. For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure that Knightfall is the beatdown, so usually you are the "Control" deck. Of course this can change, but it feels to be so for the most part. Good luck!

I noticed there was a Modern for Staples tournament 75 mi. away in Los Angeles, so I decided to go. I wanted to try Knightfall since Titanshift and a few other decks would be pretty easy to win with and Knightfall is still somewhat tough for me. There ended up being 15 players only.
Round 1 vs. Titanshift. He plays a Stomping Ground untapped and I'm thinking, uh oh Burn. Nope, Search for Tomorrow. Farseek and double Sakura-Tribe Elder, all on the play. Turn 4 Prime Time and Mountain for 3 Valakut triggers. I'm at 7 life. I EoT Collected Company and don't find anything that would save me. In the next game, it is similar except he does Wooded Foothills, then Lightning Bolt on my turn 2 Knight of the Reliquary. Unfortunately I only had 1 fetch, so it died. Then he did Farseek and double Tribe Elder again. Scapeshift came the following turn and I had no Negate, Unified Will, or Spell Queller. Precarious start to a 4 round tournament. 0-2.
Round 2 vs. 4 Color Shadow. In the first game, he made me discard a few times and I peeled land after land. Finally, I got Collected Company, but he had Stubborn Denial and he survived at 3 life (I had Noble Hierarch and Selfless Spirit swinging). Double Goyf and double Death's Shadow gets me. In the next game, it is nearly the same, but I draw Tireless Tracker while I'm getting flooded. I do 4 clues this game and he stalls, trying to find something after he faced multiple Reflector Mage this game. In the final game, I PUNTED pretty terribly. He is searching for gas and a Goyf is small. He is swinging and I draw some gas. I have Spell Queller for his Izzet Staticaster and I then lay down a Selfless Spirit. He has a Death's Shadow and a Goyf. I have a Voice Elemental token, Knight of the Reliquary, Noble Hierarch, Selfless Spirit, and Spell Queller. I attack him to 2 unfortunately because I could have found Kessig Wolf Run for lethal with Selfless Spirit as backup while he had only Stomping Ground untapped. Huge mistake. We go to his turn and he seems about ready to scoop for a split second, but then attacks. I block the Goyf with Noble Hierarch and the Death's Shadow with the Voice token instead of with the Knight as well. He does Temur Battle Rage and I forget that it is an 11/11, then also I didn't realize that double strike will only deal damage to an indestructible creature in the first strike phase, but not again in the regular combat step. I am 15 life with an 11/11 double strike, trample creature attacking. I forgot 2 things and didn't realize the rules of Magic. He shows his hand of another Temur Battle Rage and double Thoughtseize. 1-2.
Round 3 vs. Big Zoo. This guy is very well known. This is his only deck that he plays and he does surprisingly well with it. He has caused a lot of problems in the past when I played Grishoalbrand. He literally was all of my losses during a 3 month streak at TNM at a store in Orange, outside of 1 other time. He ends up drawing way less gas than me and folds. I combo him in the first game when I top deck Retreat to Coralhelm after Collected Company into double Knight of the Reliquary. The next game just has too much gas for me. One of those games. 2-0.
Round 4 vs. GR Tron. Tron with Grove of the Burnwillows. Someone is ready for the meta that I never see at my FNM. In the first game, he doesn't do turn 3 Tron. Instead he plays Firespout to kill a Scooze and a Tireless Tracker. I don't have much gas and he does Ugin the next turn, then Wurmcoil Engine and Karn Liberated. In the next game, I play turn 2 Stony Silence. I know; lucksack. I was missing a Green source, but found it on turn 3. Luckier Sack. He plays 3 Spheres on turn 3 after turn 1 Map and literally plays nothing this game. I keep Spell Queller up when I have pressure for the Nature's Claim, which doesn't come. In the next game, I mull a 0 land hand. I keep on 2 Forest, Noble Hierarch, Stony Silence, Negate, and Surgical Extraction. Should this be a keep? I end up having my Stony Silence immediately Nature's Claimed and then the Tron beating commenced. Karn, Ugin, and a midgame Wurmcoil Engine. Each turn, I draw Noble Hierarch after Noble Hierarch and Botanical Sanctum so I can't cast Collected Company ever. It most likely doesn't matter anyway since I sided 2 out and put in 7 non creature spells from the SB. I feel like my best chance to win is with the Combo, but that's terribly unlikely to happen, especially if I mulligan to try to get it. 1-2.
I finish 1-3 and am now 32-21 with the deck. It's pretty rough since my Modern win percentage is nearly 66% as of 2 weeks ago (kavu.ru for those wondering). I know I've made mistakes, but I think I'm just going to keep trying with this deck for a while.

So what do people see as our tough matchups and very close matchups?
Elves seems tough. Titanshift is certainly tough. GB Tron...
Close in my opinion would be Abzan Company, Burn, Affinity, BGx, Death's Shadow, UW Control, E Tron?, Jeskai, Grixis...
Feel free to disagree. I have fewer than 50 matches under my belt so far with the deck, so I can certainly be wrong. I'd love to see reasoning as well.
Got wrecked at a 18 person FNM.
Round 1 vs. Abzan Company. Lost the die roll. Turn 2 Devoted Druid. Turn 3 Collected Company into Vizier and Duskwatch Recruiter after I had played Voice of Resurgence on turn 2. Game - didn't have Path anyway. I attrition him out in the next game. He draws only a few creatures and I have 2 Negates for CoCo and Chord at different stages of the game. Still have gas when it ends, as I couldn't get off 3 lands. In the last game, I basically drew 3 creatures, 2 Knight and 1 Reflector Mage and they are all Path to Exiled. I have a Birds of Paradise, which can swing for lethal next turn, but he draws and plays Scavenging Ooze with 2 Temple Garden up. I will end up 2 damage short before succumbing to creatures, so I block and Kessig Wolf Run to trade with the Duskwatch Recruiter. He gets me next turn. 1-2.
Round 2 vs. Mono Green Stompy. I draw 2 more Knight of the Reliquary and a CoCo and am at 7 life, facing lethal on turn 4 on the draw for me. In the next game, his hand is slower and Spell Quellers wreck him. In the last game, his hand is slow again and Reflector Mages wreck him. 2-1.
Round 3 vs. Grixis Shadow. In the first game, I barely get there with a Retreat to Coralhelm and then Knight to tap 2 Death's Shadow and swing in for lethal. In the next game, I get owned by Kologhan's Command twice and after choosing to discard Company instead of Knight on 3 mana, I drew 2 lands in a row! In the final game, I keep on Ghost Quarter, Hallowed Fountain, Sacred Foundry, Spell Queller, Reflector Mage, Knight of the Reliquary, and Collected Company. I never draw a GREEN mana source and Reflector Mage gets discarded, while Spell Queller is killed by Fatal Push and fetch. I draw 1 land the turn before lethal - Kessig Wolf Run. Yeaah! 1-2.
Round 4 vs. ?. I decided to leave since my friend had a rough showing with my Bogles at 1-2 as well, so we can't prize. I would prefer to play it out for experience, but don't mind leaving early as well. 0-2.
I get 1-3, a big turn since 3-1 at WNM. I would love if someone could watch and point out mistakes. I could have gotten Horizon Canopy in game 3 vs. Abzan Company, but I felt my best chance of winning was Kessig Wolf Run. Then my Reflector Mage ate his 3rd Path to Exile of the game and BoP came too late since his Scavenging Ooze stabilized him.

Went 3-1 at a small 13 person WNM. Round 1 vs. Esper Goryo Gifts. If you play tournament Magic and drive to a place with 1 guy, you know what I'm talking about - you will play him at some time during the tournament, probably in the first round. Yep. He destroys me with a turn 3 Goryo's Vengeance Obzedat on turn 3. I can't find Path to Exile in time and lose. In the next 2 games, it slows down and becomes an attrition battle. He had turn 0 Leyline of the Void, which I'm not sure I'd even side vs. Knightfall. This gave me more cards and it got stupid with double Tireless Tracker in the 3rd game, allowing me to not extend any other creatures from my hand. Tireless Tracker is what makes me play Knightfall right now - I am enamored with the card. <3 2-1.
Round 2 vs. 5 Color Shadow. He makes me discard, then hits gas with Goyf and Death's Shadow. I Path to Exile the Goyf mistakenly to put him to 2 life. If he has a fetch, he can kill me because I'm at 12 life. He has 1 card in hand, which is a fetch and draw for turn is a Fatal Push to kill my Knight of the Reliquary anyway. In the next game, I keep a 3 land hand and flood out, losing to double Death's Shadow. 0-2.
Round 3 vs. Mono Red (budget) Burn. I kept with a bunch of mana dorks and get there with a key Spell Queller in the midgame and then some big guys after that. He mulled to 5. I was attacking him for 3 on turn 2 with triple Noble Hierarch causing triple exalted. In the next game, his hand is better and he gets me to 8, but a combination of Scavenging Ooze, Courser of Kruphix, double Voice of Resurgence, and then the Voice token end it quickly. I play a Reflector Mage to move the Grim Lavamancer out of the way to swing for lethal. 2-0.
Round 4 vs. Enchantress. He has only played last Wednesday for the first time he's played in 3 months. He has caused me a lot of problems, as I always have a tough time vs. Naya Enchantress. This is the only deck he plays and he's played it and molded it a LOT. 3 Nahiris and 3 Eidolon of Blossoms in the first game. He has a resolved Abundance, which admittedly drew dead cards in Arbor Elves and Utopia Sprawls. I used 2 Spell Queller, then another in the midgame to get traction, but it was a topdecked Gavony Township in the late game and no block (play mistake) that allowed lethal to go through. I'm pretty sure I had it next turn with Kessig Wolf Run on top, but you never know what Abundance can find. In the next game, I get double Negate and Tireless Tracker wrecks him. Knight of the Reliquary is protected with Gideon's Intervention, but I draw 5 extra cards and win with 5 Clues in play. Qasali Pridemage blew up 1 of 2 Ghostly Prison and I have plenty of mana to push through with the Exalted Tracker 4 times (once chumped). 2-0.

I am also thinking about adding 1 Clique to my mainboard. But don`t you feel an Island would make it way easier to cast her, since UU is not always easy to pay?
This is the main reason that I don't actually enjoy my 1 SB copy as much as I should.

I don’t think there’s much to extract from your win/loss rates. There’s so many facets to winning and losing that trying to discern anything regarding the “tightness” of your play or your thought process during sideboarding is a fools errand. You should concern yourself with how much your losing and why.
In regards to what you could have done to do better, it’s hard to figure out because you don’t have replays to see what you should have done. Magic has a lot of its successful results predicated on a big chunk of luck and it’s also the same with losing. You could have been dealt poor hands and matchups but always remember there’s something YOU could have done better.
This rings 100% true. I read a bit too much into it - assuming that when things are going well, it's easy for me to finish the match off, but when things get tougher and more grindy, it's tough for me to maintain my concentration. Admittedly, there have been a few games recently (last week vs. Grixis Control for example) where I was pretty sure that I could have won if I had really grinded it out and made every good decision, but I chose to just pack it in instead. I feel like I'm losing some of my fire for Modern, especially since I can't play the matchups that I'm used to playing (although I should be glad that I'm dodging Titanshift, lol). Hopefully, getting 2-2 will instill some motivation to play better next week. I do realize that there is not a big difference between 2-2, 3-1, and even better records at the FNM level. I realize that I've played better at 3-2 (with Bloom Titan) than I have at 5-0 (Jund). I think I have gotten away from that recently (trying to just be happy with my play, not the record) because there have been a lot more mistakes, including mulligan decisions, than in the past. I guess I just need to tighten up.
I guess you didn't address the 4 land, 3 3 drop hand vs. Burn because it's obvious that it's not a keep?
*It's just that, you know, win/loss rates are a nice way to make your ***** look big.

Round 1 vs. Merfolk. I do turn Breeding Pool into Noble Hierarch, trying to fake Infect. He does turn 1 Aether Vial. I do turn 2 Qasali Pridemage, blow up Aether Vial. He gets stuck on 2 land for 2 turns and I spit out many creatures in the meantime. I win with 2 Collected Company still in hand. Pure gas for me. He made a mistake of not attacking twice with unblockable since I had Breeding Pool. After the first attack was missed, I calculated that I would have been at 1 if he attacked correctly after that. I could have been wrong in that calculation. I get a bit Knight of the Reliquary and Tireless Tracker. I did a Reflector Mage on a Master of the Pearl Trident. A turn later, he had Lord of Atlantis and 2 Cursecatcher in play with a Vial. He goes to Vial in the Master presumably. I go for Path to Exile on his Lord of Atlantis. He does Echoing Truth on it, then I flash in Izzet Staticaster to machine gun the Cursecatchers. It's pretty easy after that. 2-0.
Round 2 vs. Affinity. In game, 1, I try to stabilize and have the win next turn after topdecking 2 Path to Exile in a row (Courser of Kruphix is showing both). But he draws Arcbound Ravager and I only have 1 more Path to Exile for 3 flying creatures that are unblocked. Then in the next game, I just get too much gas while he stumbles against my Reflector Mage and Paths. In the last game, he got stuck on 2 Wear/Tear in hand. 2-1.
Round 3 vs. Soul Sisters. He mulls to 6. I mull to 5. He plays Martyr of Sands, then Squadron Hawks. I Path to Exile the Martyr, but he has Honor of the Pure, Spectral Procession after triple Soul's Wardens. He just gains too much life and the 3 Collected Company that I tried to hit Spell Queller to exile a key spell ended up hitting Tireless Tracker, Scooze, Voice of Resurgence, Selfless Spirit, and another Scooze. Booo! In the next game, he has the same hand, but I have double Knight of the Reliquary. I think I attacked him for around 100 damage this game. The last game is interesting. I keep a 4 land hand with Tireless Tracker. I draw...a million lands. I ended up drawing 6 extra cards, finding a Spell Queller and Vendilion Clique to chump a 6/6 Serra's Ascendant, but I cannot find Reflector Mage or Path to Exile. This was really rough beats. I ended up with a late game Negate, but it's certainly not enough. 1-2.
Round 4 vs. Burn. In the first game, I get a Knight killed, but have a late game double Spell Queller turn after he drew 3 midgame creatures. I survive at 5 life. The next game in similar, but with 3 cards in hand and me at 10 life, he does EoT Bolt/Bolt, then untap draw Bolt/Boros Charm. I was not 1 turn away from winning, but 2 turns, so I can't be that salty. In the final game, I keep a hand with 3 shocklands. I make a key mistake, playing Breeding Pool tapped instead of Temple Garden. I draw Path to Exile off the top and I lose a few turns later to Boros Charm, untap draw, Boros Charm. It was exact lethal, although he did have 1 more card in hand so it could have been burn anyway. I would have saved 2 life if I played Temple Garden tapped on turn 1 instead of Breeding Pool, then I wouldn't have had to shock the Temple Garden. Rough play from me. I probably should have mulliganed a hand with 3 shocks and 4 three mana creatures anyway. Kind of hoping to draw some lands that don't do damage to me or some 2 drops, but that's too much to ask for. You guys can tell me what a horrible keep it was vs. Burn. 1-2.
2-2. I was a bit on tilt, but I'm not sure exactly what I could have done better.
*I should state something as well. Today was one of the few times I've won 2-1 only. I've been winning a lot of 2-0s, but losing 1-2s. I'm wondering if that's some sort of play deficiency that I have currently. I know my siding hasn't been the best and I've failed to keep the drive to play well unfortunately (Modern has gotten stale recently), but I was wondering if anyone has had this sort of situation and what it could possibly mean. It could just be how the roulette is falling right now as well. I'm not saying it 100% says something about my play.

This is me, just posting my results here in case anyone wants to discuss it or ask any questions. Only missed top 8 to tiebreakers. Ended the event at 5-1-1, with the draw being a game I would've won had I noticed my opponent cast a card they didn't have the mana for early enough to rewind, would've won game 3 had we not gone to time. Oh well.
I like it. Solid list for Vizier Knightfall. This sort of tempts me to try out Vizier Knightfall, as I've been somewhat tempted by both Vizier Knightfall and Humans w/ Knight. I actually played GW all-in Vizier/Druid Combo and was 11-1 for 3 weeks (well, 10-1-1 ID, but played it out to 2-0).

Hey guys! Just picked the deck back up again not too long ago, and had a question: I have three Kitchen Finks in my board, is that good enough in a burn heavy meta? I also have one Courser of Kruphix in the main and my counter spell package looks like 2 Unified Will, and one Worship as well.
If u want to beat Burn, play Rhox War Monk, and also is decent vs midrange or URx control, and sometimes feel better than kitchen finks because don't die against Anger of the Gods. I'm playin it and like a lot.
I like it. I'd assume that you'd want 2-3 in your SB?

I like to play 3 Vizier. But after playing both versions I like more the traditional Knightfall, but both versions are very good, but miss a lot the value of the normal Knightfall instead the Vizier. Also the flood and dead cards in the Vizier is more common.
Also my metagame have a lot of Blood Moons around, it's better play the version with 7 basics or the matchup still fine with less basics and the splash to the kessig?
I think it really depends on what kind of Blood Moon deck it is. I play tested a lot vs. Madcap Moon and the matchup was very good. I do have 2 mainboard Qasali Pridemage though, so that helped a bunch. There's nothing like an opponent doing Blood Moon and you Collected Company into a Qasali Pridemage and blow it up immediately (or only if/when you need to).

I went 3-1 with knightfall again at a 20 person fnm.
Round 1 vs. Mono White Enchantments. In the first game, I fail to attack with a Spell Queller that I left on his side of the field, so I don't have lethal. But then I Collected Company into Knight of the Reliquary and an obligatory 2/2. Now I have it, but big mistake. In the next game, a few botched attacks made this game go longer than it needed to be. I had 2 Knight of the Reliquary and Kessig Wolf Run, but 2 Angels via double Sigil of the Empty Throne came out each turn. Finally, I got lethal after double Phyrexian Unlife were out, but Solemnity was Negated. This guy always plays a different fun deck and I believe he finished 3-1, so 3-0 after this round. 2-0.
Round 2 vs. Grixis Control. He mulls to 6. I mull to 5. Ancestral Vision on turn 1. From this point on, he played 4 Lightning Bolt by turn 5, Fatal Push, Terminate, and Snapcaster Mage/Lightning Bolt. I do Collected Company into a single Birds of Paradise, with 5 lands that I needed in there. Yeah, not winning this one. I could have actually grinded this game out and waited until I drew a mana dork to play Knight of the Reliquary and Spell Queller, but I felt that this wasn't really my game to win and wanted to see how it would go after SB. After SB, it was nearly the same. All my creatures got killed, 2 Collected Company yielded a Birds of Paradise, Scavenging Ooze, and Selfless Spirit, and Knight was small early on, so he ate a Bolt. I got raced by a quick Tasigur, ScM, and Creeping Tar Pit. It sucks because this guy beat me on RUG Scapeshift last week and I wanted revenge, especially since I know I can beat him easily and have done so in the past, but alas, it was not meant to be and he's on a 2 match win streak against me. 0-2.
Round 3 vs. Jeskai Queller. This game is really painful for my opponent. I don't play anything until turn 4, Noble Hierarch that I just drew. But I'm sitting on CoCo, get Voice of Resurgence into play, and then sit on 3 Spell Queller. He draws ... 0 Bolt and it is really rough for him. He hadn't played in a tournament in quite a long time and it showed when he couldn't figure out how to get my Voice countered. I played Voice. He did Spell Snare. I did Spell Queller. He considered something, but I think he didn't realize that he could let my Queller resolve, then with the Voice still on the stack, remove the Queller and Snare the Voice. I was happy for him not figuring it out, although I nearly told him myself, because I needed those to stick. The next game is similar, with him not drawing much removal and me drawing 2 more Spell Queller to go with my opening 1. 2-0.
Round 4 vs. Elves. I basically win both games via Retreat to Coralhelm. I know, right? How else could I win? I keep a 1 land, BoP, Knight, Retreat, etc. hand. I don't draw land, but get another Noble Hierarch and go off 2 turns later. In the next game, I go unimpeded on turn 3. He does CoCo, getting Reclamation Sage, targeting the Retreat, but in response, I fetch and go off anyway. Lucky of me to have a fetch for my 3rd land. A turn 4 and a turn 3 win! Pretty lucky of me. 2-0.
I finish 3-1, for an overall 27-10 with the deck, not counting IDs. Not bad, although I will probably try a bit harder next time (when draws and CoCos didn't quite go my way in round 2).

I haven't played against Bant Eldrazi with Knightfall yet, so I really don't know. I would say just try to keep Knight off the table. Play around Spell Queller if you can, and hope to Smash some Realities. I would put in some SB cards to counter Collected Company. Maybe Engineered Explosives for a 2 drop or mana dorks, although you have to be weary of your own mana dorks of course. For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure that Knightfall is the beatdown, so usually you are the "Control" deck. Of course this can change, but it feels to be so for the most part. Good luck!

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Round 1 vs.
My list is this, except the 8th mana dork for the 3rd Scavenging Ooze.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Elves seems tough.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Round 1 vs.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)This rings 100% true.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Round 1 vs.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)I think it really depends on what kind of Blood Moon deck it is.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Round 1 vs.
