That is very true. And I guess major abuses of them could be too nasty, but by themselves they are a minor effect, even if used every turn. So of course, mileage may very, but they certainly are a more interesting idea then say, blinking Avalanche Rider or Angel of Despair.

I like them, but I can quickly understand how they could get so outclassed. In EDH, ramp is so....er, rampant that the opponent either has enough mana to pay or enough excess land to sacrifice. They also are a tad expensive. BUT, I do like the idea of them, and abused in Animar or Brago could make for a really fun deck. For the OP's Animar deck, which cards are you looking to include in your deck and are there any other obvious stinkers? Because you CAN do a lot with these pirates, but their may be better combinations to work with.
