You're usually better than me at avoiding this. I personally can't avoid the temptation to say something, lol. (no restraint here)

hello every one
there is a lot of talk lately for banning Faithless Looting due to the dominance of Izzet Pheonix and Dredge
what do you think , is the card worth banning at this moment ?
and what about our deck, can it survive such a hit is looting get baned ?

Used to have 3 Chalice of the Void. That's probably unnecessary and could be the slots for Leyline of Sanctity. You could do Leyline of the void, but I'm not sure where you find space.

Most Grishoalbrand players don't play Defense Grid, although it certainly can be a SB tool if he feels it's needed.
I often go for it with the life total, unless of course there's some possibly Lightning Bolt action. Sometimes you can't beat them having a Lightning Bolt either way, so you go for it because you can possibly win if they don't have it and you can't win either way if they DO have it. I feel like if you are sure that you win next turn, then you don't need to go for it. If you are not sure, you should usually default to going for it. I have lost because I did not go for it, but rarely because I did go for it (or never that I can remember off-hand). It obviously depends on a lot of stuff, like what's on board for your opponent. Can they go off? Do they have lethal attackers or possibly lethal attackers (for example if they draw Cranial Plating or a Human to buff the Champions).
The condensed version is usually you go for it. I believe that it's correct.

There's no reason for us to open up the deck to removal. This creature does nothing until it is not summoning sick.

Yeah, I think you side in Anger of the Gods and Collective Brutality if you have them. You need to kill the Devoted Druid and the Scavenging Ooze right away. I feel like the matchup is fairly 50/50, but a friend who does better than myself with Grishoalbrand feels it's unfavored for Grishoalbrand, so take that how you will. Every time I've played against it, the games have been super close.
Regarding mulliganing, I do think it's worth it to mulligan maybe once or twice trying to get a quick hand or one with interaction. The good part that we have going for us is that Scavenging Ooze should be their only grave disruption. I still remember beating Abzan Company (before Vizier) on my turn 1 after he did turn 1, Birds of Paradise. I had a turn 2, but drew a 2nd Simian Spirit Guide on my turn. He showed me a 2nd land and a Scavenging Ooze.
Right now, I am playing Abzan Counters (Vizier combo and Viscera Seer infinite life combo). The key to beating the deck is that you have to never let the Devoted Druid not be summoning sick if you can. If you can't, then you deal with whatever happens. Maybe this is obvious to some, but I don't think you want to even kill it on the upkeep or their turn because they will automatically have 4 mana to use on turn 3 with just him - more if they had a mana dork on turn 1.

It's always nice to see players crushing with Grishoalbrand. Good job! Keep it up.
Regarding the discarding the Worldspine Wurm after End Step Goryo's Vengeance on Borborygmos Enraged, I'm not surprised. I have told this interaction to people in person and many of them doubt it works this way. I don't know why so many people doubt me on rulings. Just a few years ago, players would ask ME rather than the Judge at FNM about rulings and I'd have to say, "you should ask the official Judge."
Leyline of Sanctity and I have a love/hate relationship. I played 4 in the SB of Bogles for many years. I was upset that I never had one in my opener or drew one in the game for the first 4-6 months that I played the deck, so I felt that variance. The first time I even had one in my opener was the in the Top 4 of the very first PPTQ season and it won me games 2 and 3 vs. Jund. I went on to win that PPTQ. So, it's kind of odd. On one hand, I'm upset that I didn't get Leyline before, but the timing on those in games 2 and 3 was impeccable. In our deck if we draw one later, it can easily be Cathartic Reunion or Faithless Looting fodder. We can also cast one with Manamorphose if needed. I would be down to try 4 in the SB if I was still playing the deck regularly, but my meta doesn't have too many discard decks. Shadow is waaaaaay down, Mardu Reveler is 1 out of 30 people at most, and I have been dodging the Jund players. There still are 2-3 Burn players, so I could certainly see it, but I feel at least a little bit like it may not be for my meta.
Quicksilver Amulet, that brings back memories. I remember being excited to get the Urza's Legacy copies because it was around that time when I loved playing the game so much. I tried it in the SB and quickly (no pun intended) found out that it felt very subpar. It takes too much mana to use because usually you want to Desperate Ritual it in to play, then use SSG to get out the creature. I don't remember all of why I didn't like it; I just remember when I go through my cards looking for some odd card, I always take a second to look at my 2 copies of that card.

You were correct to side in Chalice of the Void on the draw as well. Sometimes it won't be enough. GDS is a very resilient and strong deck. But if even only to counter Stubborn Denial, Chalice of the Void is good here.
I had a game recently where I lost after resolving turn 1 Chalice of the Void, turn 3 Blood Moon. He had a basic Swamp, played some countered discard into the Chalice, and then played Gurmag Angler. I lost, while not finding any win-cons after those lock pieces. The worst part was that I drew 3 Night's Whisper and a Cathartic Reunion, so you'd think I would have gotten there. Nope, just an Ape to chump one turn.

7-4 ain't bad, but it seems like you are going through some variance period. sorry to hear FCG.
You said this is the first time you've lost to humans. how bad do you think that matchup is? I personally think it's definitively bad and I'd expect to be at least 35/65. Maybe I'm doing something wrong
It's all just personal experience. I've played a lot vs. Infect in the past and it felt like less than a 10% matchup. But a lot of that is the draws that I personally have faced. I do not expect that matchup to be less than 10% for most players.
When I played vs. Affinity in the past, I would never draw HATE, but I would draw quick hands, so the matchup was around 50/50. I have drawn nearly at least 1 hate card every SBed game against Affinity in recent times, so it has also felt a lot easier. I personally believe the matchup is probably 40/60, but most people may have it at 35/65.
With regards to Humans, as you can see, I've only had limited experience. 6 matches is not enough to really know. But I have always drawn multiple pieces of hate cards, so it's hard to shut down EE, Anger, AND Bontu's. Any of those resolving can easily wipe their board and they are left with no chance unless they have us low and draw Mantis Riders. The odd part for me is that I've had only TWO possible turn 2s in the past 3 months (I have played other decks too though) and both got blown up by losing the die roll and Kitesail Freebooter. After the last match where I got owned, I can easily see it being closer to what you said at 35/65. My estimate (butt guess) would be around 40/60, but players who usually draw well against them can do better, lol.

Played in a Modern 5K today - 32 people, 5 rounds.
Round 1 vs. NO OPPONENT. Guy shows up, so they pair him to me. He's on Grixis Shadow. I assume he'll have good lucky. He gets stuck on 1 land and on turn 4 I draw another Goryo's Vengeance (other was discarded) to get Borborygmos Enraged for game. In the next one, I got Blood Moon discarded, then Countersqualled when I had 1 mana open. He draws a Death's Shadow after that and kills me with it. I go for a Through the Breach when I'm about to die, but he has Countersquall again. In the final game, I got SSG into Chalice of the Void on 1. He feels stumped, but gets a basic Swamp when I turn 3 Blood Moon him. We play draw go. I am waiting for a Through the Breach to win the game. He keeps getting discard countered so he can power out a Gurmag Angler, which puts me on a clock. I draw 3 Goryo's Vengeance and a Faithless Looting that I can't win with since I have Chalice on 1. I am about to go to the discard step and discard Griselbrand when a Collective Brutality puts me at 6 cards. I can't go to the discard step on time, can't loot or it's countered, and don't find a Through the Breach to win. I also could have found a Cathartic Reunion, but admittedly I sided 1 out, down to 2 and had cast 1 already. Rough loss. 1-2.
Round 2 vs. Esper Goryo's Vengeance. In the first game, we come off slow, but he does Collective Brutality to nab my Goryo's Vengeance before I can do it on turn 3. I draw another and win. In the next game, it is easy to just go to the discard step with 2 Goryo's Vengeance and Pact of Negation in hand. Griselbrand is waiting for me to draw a 2nd land to get him back. My opponent stalls on 1 land too. I find it and hope that he doesn't have double Surgical Extraction. He doesn't even have 1 and it's elementary from there. 2-0.
Round 3 vs. Humans. I've played this deck now 5-6 times and this was my first loss. We both mull to 5. In the first game, he does Kitesail Freebooter to nab a Goryo's Vengeance, but I top deck another and win on the spot. In the next game, he Meddling Mage, naming Goryo's Vengeance the turn before I can do it. Then he names Anger of the Gods and it's my next draw. My next 2 draws are also Goryo's Vengeance and he wins. In the final game, a Kitesail Freebooter nabs an Engineered Explosives, which would have been sweeeet a game ago, and he does triple Sin Collector to take everything I have. If I draw Engineered Explosives, the 2nd Anger of the Gods, or 2 Bontu's Last Reckoning, I probably win after clearing his board. I draw Anger of the Gods that I scryed last turn, but he uses the last card Vialed in on 3 to Sin Collector the now drawn Anger of the Gods. I flashback Faithless Looting, but there's no out at this point. 1-2.
Round 4 vs. Hollow One. Not much to see. He had a 1/2 dude and I Goryo's Vengeanced on turn 3 to win easily. In the next game, a Burning Inquiry put 2 lands of mine in the GY, so I couldn't have an automatic turn 4 Through the Breach Wurm or Griselbrand. But I top deck a SSG after using a Shoal and Borborygmos Enraged to live the turn before and swing 15 while he's at 14. 2-0.
Round 5 vs. Zoo. A friend from the car. I Through the Breach Wurm on turn 3 and he doesn't have Path to Exile, surprisingly. In the next game, I just get a lot of removal and barely eek it out with a Wurm again. 2-0.
I go 3-2, so 7-4 for the 2 days. Did mediocre both days, with both terrible draws for me or terrible draws for my opponent. Would have rather 0-X on 1 day and top 8ed the next, but that's what happens. I'm really starting to doubt my ability to play Magic the last few months. Kind of disenchanted with Modern when I only draw better than my opponent in 50% of the matches, so I can only win 50% of the matches or slightly more.

Played in a 47 person Modern for Staples today. (Been in a real slump lately.)
Round 1 vs. Mardu Reveler. I mull 2 zero land hands and keep. He plays 3 Inquisition of Kozilek and 3 Thoughtseize to go with a Young Pyromancer (and 1 of those discard) on turn 3. I have nothing to play. Didn't draw Night's Whisper to get some cards back. In the next game, I just literally draw nothing except a Shoal and he gets Hazoret the Fervent and swings me a bunch of times to kill me. This guy made some questionable plays the next round, including losing 3 1/1 Elementals and a Reveler to a Goyf and Scooze attacking for no reason. I feel like my tiebreakers are to ***** today. Literally the furthest from being an even match today. 0-2.
Round 2 vs. Enchantress. Yes, I get to play against a friend from our local shop who has always done well vs. me. In the first game, turn 0 Leyline of Sanctity (essentially) shuts me down and I dick around with draw spells, trying to find a Wurm. I don't find it and some Ghostly Prison/Sphere of Safety effects are out. I've had enough. In the next game, he only gets 1 Ghostly Prison so I get Worldspine Wurm and Griselbrand on his EoT to pay 4 mana on my turn to kill him. In the next game, he does Arbor Elf. I do EE, smelling a double White. I kill it right away because of my hand, just needing Goryo's Vengeance, so I Cathartic Reunion, discarding Griselbrand and find not 1, but 2 Goryo's Vengeance. When it rains it pours. He shows me 2 Leyline of Sanctity in hand. He unluckily drew them during the game! 2-1.
Round 3 vs. Affinity. In the first game, he goes for the Infect kill, but he needs to make it to his turn 4. I went to the discard and put Griselbrand and killed him a turn before lethal with Goryo's Vengeance while at 6 Infect. In the next game, I'm not going to lie but I got super lucky getting an Ornithopter, a Vault Skirge, a Signal Pest, and a fresh Steel Overseer by exiling SSG to do Anger of the Gods. He rebuilds and I dick around with draw spells, but find Griselbrand in time and end up getting Borborygmos Enraged right away, so no need to chain Shoals, but just do it once. 2-0.
Round 4 vs. Burn. My tournament comes to an abrupt end. He plays a million dudes and even though I get a bunch of lands and do a Nourishing Shoal, I don't find anything. I finally find a Griselbrand, but he does Skullcrack in response to kill me. In the next game, I am just missing Griselbrand. I can't find him in time and may have done a mistake by discarding a Chalice of the Void during the late game. He ended up doing 4 Two Mana burn spells, including 2 Skillcrack, to kill me. Still, I didn't really draw a win-con and I had only 3 lands at the time. I ended up drawing 5 lands in the next 6 draws. He ended up losing the next round to the mirror, a guy who ended up winning the whole tournament. I can't be mad because this guy just won a big Legacy Staples tournament locally and has had super poor luck in 4 other matches against me (including 2 D and T vs. Bogles; terrible for D and T). 0-2.
Round 5 vs. E Tron. I get a good matchup while out of contention. I NEVER get to play against E Tron anymore, so I'll take what I can get. I think this was the highlight of the day for me. She gets not much but Relics of Progenitus and MAtter Reshaper while I draw and discard 2 Goryo's Vengeance and some lands. I get to 4 mana and SSG Through the Breach Griselbrand and win. In the next game, she does Thought-Knot Seer on turn 3, but I don't have the win-con yet, just multiples of 2. I get Wurm next turn and I just need land or mana source to Breach him the following turn. I do and win pretty easily with 5/5 Trample Wurms. Some people get all the luck with the matchups, eh? 2-0.
Round 6 vs. 5 Color Tribal Zoo. This looks like the new list with the Mantis Rider. He swings me and swings me to 3 life. I have nothing. He goes for Lightning Bolt on his turn because he thinks I'm dead, but I do Nourishing Shoal in response, draw Faithless Looting into the win next turn. Got prettttty lucky there. In the next game, I get there with a turn 4 Splice/Through the Breach Griselbrand. I couldn't play around a potential Disdainful Stroke that I thought he had, but he didn't. Then I draw a land to Breach a Borborygmos Enraged the next turn. He told me he punted the first game because he could have done Tribal Flames for lethal and responded to the Shoal with Bolt to win. 2-0.
I finish 4-2, which was 12th I think. It's pretty mediocre, but as poorly as I've been doing recently, I will take it. I actually feel some confidence at not prizing. Sad, isn't it? (just a few months ago, I'd be sad to not win 1st)

It was rough to see Jon Stern draw and play Ensnaring Bridge on turn 3 each game and you not having the quick kills. Loved the EoT win though. The commentators and Jon Stern seemed to be pretty shaken after that one.
You know we're going to need a tournament report from Amat, Finalnub, and any other Grishoalbrand players from that GP.

brainstorming for the expected metagame for toronto.. does anyone have any experience with defense grid and torpor orb, paying respect to Uwx/deaths shadow/blue moon/burn and mostly humans, respectively.
ive never tried grid mostly because of theorycrafting, as alot of our wins vs control are on their turn, but rethinking this it does seem good vs blue decks and infinitely better than boseiju with everyone and their dogs playing field of ruin
I've tried Defense Grid in the past and it was super underwhelming. But then, at the time, Boseiju was a LOT better and I played 3 Pact of Negation in the SB too. I guess if you expect a lot of Control, it seems solid. But I personally feel that there are tougher matchups than Control for us.
I wanted to ask you guys how you side vs. Death's Shadow.
Vs. Grixis Shadow, I side in 3 Chalice of the Void and 2 Blood Moon.
Vs. Jund Shadow, I side in 3 Chalice of the Void, 2 Blood Moon, and 2 Engineered Explosives
What I side out really depends. I'm starting to think at least 1 Nourishing Shoal and possibly 1 Worldspine Wurm could be sided out. I usually side out all 3 Cathartic Reunion, as it's risky vs. discard and Stubborn Denial in my opinion. How do you side?

It just really sucks because I've done terribly recently and punting 2 matches doesn't relieve that. If I felt I played 100% like I know I'm capable of, I would feel a bit better.
Meanwhile I've seen the other grishoalbrand player win nearly 90% of his matches since restarting, including 3-0 vs me. The most sad part is that I've tried to predict what I'll draw (imagining the worst) and my predictions have been terrifyingly close. I've also tried to predict my opponents draws (imagining the worst for me) and it's been super close. Against bw tokens, in which I drew what I needed to win, the only card I did not predict, short of exactly which land would be played, was secure the wastes.
I know I'm doing many things wrong. The most important starts with mulligans. I often assume that looting and flashback will get me 1 missing piece or a single land. Or I assume I'll draw some good cards with multiple draw 2s or draw 3s, discard 2.

Didn't really want to post it, but I've been having a rough time with the deck recently. Two tournaments that ended 2-2 for me.
WNM - Round 1 vs. Grixis Delver. Very awkward draws. Chances to win, but can't find lands until a counter, Lightning Bolt, and final Delver hit kills me. I go off in the next game on turn 3. I had Pact of Negation backup, but he didn't have any responses. Turn 1 Delver didn't flip in the first 2 turns here. Turn 1 Delver gets me before I can kill him. I go off, but can only draw 7 cards. I barely don't find what I need to win. 1-2.
Round 2 vs. Zoo. In game 1 I decide to not play around Path to Exile Twice. The first one stops me going off and the 2nd one kills my Wurm. In the next game, he just flooded the board. I did Anger of the Gods and he did CoCo for double Wild Nacatl and 5th land, cast Wild Nacatl. It's exactly lethal and I don't have anything else. 0-2.
Round 3 vs. 8 Whack. He knocks me low, but I turn 3 Breach a Wurm and win from there. In the next game, I do the same thing, but with Nourishing Shoal and he literally has NO chance then. 2-0.
Round 4 vs. Burn. He does Skullcrack in response to Goryo's Vengeance, but I do Nourishing Shoal in response. I end up getting there. Eidolon makes it tough and he plays a combination of Skullcracks and Lightning Helices. In the final game, I land Chalice of the Void on 2. It slows him down and I get there by Breaching a Wurm late. He must have had a LOT of 2 mana spells... 2-1.
FNM - Round 1 vs. Werewolves. He wins a game with Moonmist for my tokens after my Breached Wurm slapped him to 4. My Breached Wurms win the other 2 games. 2-1.
Round 2 vs. 4 Color Shadow. My draw steps are lands and a single Worldspine Wurm. He does some discard spells, then Goyf, then double Death's Shadow. In the next game, I plan on end step Goryo's Vengeance to draw out Stubborn Denial, then resolve Through the Breach Wurm for lethal on my turn. He doesn't counter either and I win easily. It seems like I will win easily in the next game since he floods with 5 land and only a 5/6 Tarmogoyf. But I go off, draw 21 cards, and miss out on 2 Chalice of the Void to stop Stubborn Denial, 2 Blood Moon to stop Stubborn Denial, 5 Green creatures (1 Borborygmos Enraged is gone) to use with my Nourishing Shoal in hand, or the last SSG or Desperate Ritual. He has added a topdecked Death's Shadow and the life totals are 3 to 2. I have 19 cards left in my deck. I can't find those cards, so I lose because the best I can do is Engineered Explosives to kill 1 of his 2 lethal threats. 1-2.
Round 3 vs. Grishoalbrand. He didn't turn 2 me either game this time. I just drew super dead, so he had all the time in the world. In game 1, I had a timely Collective Brutality to take Through the Breach and he drew dead while I finally did Griselbrand. He just literally had all the time in the world in games 2 and 3. Maybe I should have mulliganed, assuming I would find nothing in the games? Not sure. I already mulled to 6, missing Griselbrand to go off on turn 2. Never found it in this game. 1-2.
Round 4 vs. BW Tokens. Kills me on turn 5 in this one with Sorin, Lord of Innistrad. The next game, I kept drawing Nourishing Shoal and Worldspine Wurms. I ended up with 3 Nourishing Shoal in the graveyard and doing 2 shuffle triggers from Wurms, but I finally find land to Nourishing Shoal Wurm, Splice Through the Breach, Wurm. In the final game, I go off, but don't find the win. I finally get to a stage to win with the Wurm tokens, as Borborygmos Enraged was the literal last card on my deck and using 2 Worldspine Wurm to have extra turns and finally win. 2-1.
Two days of 4-4 total. Rough beats. I think maybe I'm just not good enough. A lot of fizzles and a lot of drawing only lands during a game.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Used to have 3 Chalice of the Void. That's probably unnecessary and could be the slots for Leyline of Sanctity. You could do Leyline of the void, but I'm not sure where you find space.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)I often go for it with the life total, unless of course there's some possibly Lightning Bolt action.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Regarding mulliganing, I do think it's worth it to mulligan maybe once or twice trying to get a quick hand or one with interaction.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Regarding the discarding the Worldspine Wurm after End Step Goryo's Vengeance on Borborygmos Enraged, I'm not surprised.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)I had a game recently where I lost after resolving turn 1 Chalice of the Void, turn 3 Blood Moon.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)It's all just personal experience.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Round 1 vs.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Round 1 vs.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)It was rough to see Jon Stern draw and play Ensnaring Bridge on turn 3 each game and you not having the quick kills. Loved the EoT win though. The commentators and Jon Stern seemed to be pretty shaken after that one.
You know we're going to need a tournament report from Amat, Finalnub, and any other Grishoalbrand players from that GP.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)I've tried Defense Grid in the past and it was super underwhelming.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Meanwhile I've seen the other grishoalbrand player win nearly 90% of his matches since restarting, including 3-0 vs me.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)WNM - Round 1 vs.
