Here is my list currently. I feel like Sorin, Solemn Visitor is great in this deck. The lifelink to all creatures is fantastic in the mid game. I still like the 2 remand and 2 spell snare are the right cards for me as well. I have been doing pretty well in testing. I like that this deck can have an explosive turn 4 with a good opening hand, and even be controlling enough to work through a bad start. The side board is a little rough, but has been ok so far. No unwinnable matchups so far, which is nice, but some are definitely rough for me (looking at you cruel control, I hate playing that deck).
P.S. I keep liking Lingering souls more and more. That card is really good.
Just my opinion but pack rat seems anti-synergistic with mentor to me. You don't want to be discarding your spells that trigger mentor and his tokens to make rats. Personally I want the tokens and prowess triggers.
As for mana tithe, this deck plays blue. Mana tithe doesn't do anything better than a number of blue counters do, or black disruption/removal does.
That said, I do believe anything is worth a try, but these options are outclassed by lots of other cards.
On a side note, I have come around to lingering souls after playing it a lot more. I was wrong, I AM a lingering souls kind of guy!
I've tested that list out a little bit, and it seems a bit finicky. Some starts are just crazy, ather times it gets a bit durdly. I think I'll trim the lands one at a time and see how it feels at 21 and 20.
Murderous cut is something I have tested a little and it is pretty good. I've gone down a bauble and a spell snare and tried one cut and one smother and that seems good. I'm still a little stuck on myth realized. It can easily get to 7/7 and more by turn 3-4 and that is huge, but it is kinda dead later. Might swap them for 2 Tasigur or angler. And I still don't like lingering souls much. I just might not by a lingering souls type of guy I guess.
This deck is super interesting to me and lots of fun. I have been testing around with this list the last few days, and so far I really like it. I'm not sure about lingering souls and the sideboard is a mess, but overall I think its a pretty fun deck. If I take out souls, I'd probably add 2 more delver of secrets. Its a great turn 1 play here, as it starts the pressure and keeps the opponent punching off their heels early in the game. It is usually enough to allow a safe monastery mentor casting. Myth realized is another card I am unsure of. It is great early game and can grow really fast, it dodges sorcery speed removal for the most part and is a great mana dump later. Late game; however, it is not so good. If I've boarded in Liliana its a no brainer discard most of the time if I need to plus her. definitely worth more testing though.
Any thoughts on this list? I'd like to get it where I am comfortable with it before I start spending the money on the cards I don't have (been testing on cockatrice).
