I don't run Gatekeeper, my list is pretty much still the last one I posted here because there hasn't been any competitive Modern in my city lately and while I've stayed on edge testing my list, I haven't had to update much since I don't know what the meta will be like when the next local Modern league starts.
Wait wait, coldtonight, we don't hurt ourselves with Rest in Peace? I have not been running it because Lingering Souls has proven to be one of my best cards
I believe every single Grixis Control deck I've played against sideboarded Night of Souls Betrayal vs me.
Which is great because I side out the souls for RiP and they just can't play if it ressolves. And it does ressolve often because they too think we can't win without souls, which is absolutely wrong.
Nighthawk is an exellent creature vs decks not running red. It's either a land (through path), their graveyard (through Murderous cut) or their best creature.
Went 1-2 in a field of 33 tonight, first round I had a bye. List as posted before -1 Sculler -1 Victim of Night +2 Grafted Wargear.
Match 2 (the first one I played in) vs. Burn 1-2. In game 1 a T2 Rat somehow stuck after he had cast Eidolon of the Great Revel. Being able to do stuff without casting any spells was quite handy. In game 2 + 3 it was all Goblin Guide T1 and then burn to the face. I hate Burn. Kor Firewalker here I come.
Match 3 vs. BW Midrange 2-0 I beat a high school kid running a budget version of what we're trying to do here. He had Obzedat, Gurmag Angler, and Resto but I had too much removal. In game 1 Rat closed it very early, game 2 went to Percy.
Match 4 vs. Mono-U Tron. In game 1 he had the nuts draw, Tron in his opener plus draw plus Wurmcoil. In this game he got all four Wurmcoil Engines on the battlefield. I kept my opener which had 3x Lingering Souls in it and ended up drawing #4 but needless to say they are no match for Wurmcoils. Game 2 I Thoughtseized hie Expedition Map (the ONLY disruption I drew against him in the match!), Fulminator'ed his Tower, and Pack Rat'ed for the win. Game 3 he drew ALL the counterspells. Bob got me down to 7 life before I could kill him off myself, and then my opponent hit me once for 6 with Wurmcoil. I Pathed it but not in time; a few turns later he Ugin bolted me for the win.
I have had a lot of success with Pack Rat on T2. Using IoK or TS to clear the way is very good. Jötun Grunt only made it on the table once, lasting 2 turns, but I hardly saw him in hand all night.
I did not see Grafted Wargear in my hand at all except for drawing one once, right before a stack of 5/5 Rats was gonna alpha strike anyway. So no play report there.
It was a different Blue Tron player than I played last week and I've seen at least two others at the tables. My meta is telling me something, and it is to run Tron and Burn hate. I want to main deck 2 Ghost Quarter but can't really see running more than 5 colorless lands, even with 2 Urborgs and a full fetch and shock package. I might try ditching the Vault snd a Plains maybe? Or maybe Miren/Plains? Or Miren/Vault.
3x Firewalker will be replacing both Damnations and one Stony Silence in the side.
GQ, Vault, and Miren all seem like corner cases pretty much as far as I can tell. Anyway something's gotta go in the land package, and Mutavault is absolute money with Rat. Ideas with explanations please?
Also still looking for feedback and experiences on the Merfolk match. Am I the only one here playing against that deck?
I haven't played against merfolk in a while but I expected it to be easy with our high density of removal and discard. Is it actually a hard match for you?
As for cutting stuff. I don't like Miren at all, it slows you down on colors and is fragile to GQ and Tectonic Edge while not contributing almost anything at all. You don't need anything more than the removal, Lilly and Wargear to get rid of Percy, and I'm considering cutting the wargear for Bitterblossoms or Scullers myself.
Yes, it's because of the mana cost. Even though we're a mostly black deck the possibility of having BW turn 2 comes up much more often than the possibility to win the game by targeting the opponent with Sign in Blood. Specially for someone who's using Painlands and 2 colorless lands.
Dark Confidant is the absolute best card draw engine. Absolute, irreplaceable, I'd rather save for him than Mutavauls (you don't need them, personally I don't play them) or even fetchlands.
In the meanwhile Night's Whisper is better than Sign in Blood or Wall of Omens.
You're not missing anything, it's just the only thing I haven't tried against RGTron. It seems that ******* deck is undefeatable if you're playing midrange.
White is the best sideboard color. Rakdos is my all time favorite color combo but it's not worth it in Modern right now in my opinion. It's too frail and easy to hate on.
Went 3-2 today.
1-2 vs Burn.
He won both matches by having natural turn 1 Leyline of Punishment to neuter my lifegain.
1-2 vs UR Delver.
Game 1 was too long and too good, he won at 1 life. Game 2 he couldn't keep a permanent on the field. Game 3 I drew no removal at all.
2-0 vs Affinity.
Even without Disenchant it's a very easy match.
2-0 vs Storm.
I didn't think I'd win this one but Persecutor's crazy fast clock won game 1, and I extracted Grapeshot and the goblin on the first two turns of game 2.
2-0 vs Jund.
Persecutor surprised again, game 2 Pack Rat and Bob quickly over-ran an army of Goyfs after we stalled.
Didn't make top 8 because the Burn player lost every other game and dragged me to 10th place under two other 3-2 players.
Zealous Persecution wasn't useful at all, I know if I take it out I'll be faced by elves all day everyday but whatever, I'd rather shore more matches than have a "silver bullet" that theoretically helps vs other matches (Affinity, Infect, Twin) that are already easy for the deck.
I'm juggling between Languish because Percy survives and I'm not spending on Damnation. Phyrexian Revoker to help with the random wild Tron. Utter End for random ***** like say Leyline of Punishment without over-commiting and ending up without targets as happened with Disenchant. Or Duress to go full hand-hating+extraction mode vs blue and combo decks.
How do you guys do against aggro matchups? I'm really having trouble with Affinity, Zoo and Elves at least in game 1. I feel like I play enough removal but it still doesn't seem enough for those matchups. That's why I consider splashing red for Bolts and Helixes (maybe even Anger) hoping that will improve my aggro matchups while not significantly hindering my other matchups. Also, tron gives me trouble and splashing red would give me access to Sowing Salt.
You run 11 removal spells and most of them can't target everything. I run 12 removal (4 Lilly, 4 Path, 4 Victim) and don't have trouble with Affinity or Zoo. Elves is a problem but Elves is a combo deck that looks like an aggro deck, so long as you kill the lords and Ezuri, their creatures will be ***** against rats or even spirit tokens.
I think I tried really hard to make Mardu Midrange work but I just have had better results with Orzhov Midrange.
I tried splashing for Bolt, Helix, K's Command and Butcher. Young Pyro, Bolt, Helix and Doom. Ajani, Bolt, Pyromaster and Lavaman. A million different configurations among these and just notthing.
Neither was much better than us. Affinity is much easier and Infect is a bye, big deal when you still lose like a baby to both Tron variants and you have worse game vs Jund and Junk.
Never tested the match but may be better vs Elves and Merfolk, and you gotta experience things firsthand, so try it out and tell us how it did.

And I gave up on Mardu, it just doesn't win.

Sorin, he's brutal lifegain, a flying bear and an "I win" button vs other midrange and Twin. Gideon is only a beater and Glorious Anthem for 2WW.

Rest in Peace
Without Tasigoyf and Fishygoyf that deck is ***** plain and simple.
In the meanwhile Night's Whisper is better than Sign in Blood or Wall of Omens.

Lost 0-2 vs Tron.
I'm tired of losing to Tron. I've tried everything and notthing works, Stony Silence, Evil Presence, Contaminated Ground, Surgical Extraction, Rain of Tears, Fulminator Mage, whatever, they still win.
Only thing I haven't tried is Suppression Field and I bet they'll be able to beat that ***** too. All they have is mana.
I didn't really like the Wargears, may take them off along with Bitterblossom and go back to 4x Pack Rat main.
