The deck ain't cheap. If you want to move from the MED into Dead Guy I would start with the mana base and get the fetches and shocks. Caves of Koilos is very bad with Thoughtseize and Dark Confidant. Isolated Chapel is very bad with colorless lands and this deck needs Mutavault to make Pack Rat strong enough to be a player. After that, get some Thoughtseizes and two more IoKs and make sure you have four Paths. All of this stuff dual-purposes to strengthen the Tokens build.
Then, to get the rest of the way there, you will need to throw down for Bob and Lili. I don't know any competitive versions of this deck that don't feature those two cards as major players. I built into Dead Guy from the Modern Event Deck in just this way.
Jötun Grunt is conditional for sure, but it works for me. Maindeck graveyard hate is a terrific idea in the current meta (as it plays out at my LGS, anyway). Personally I don't plan to take it out but I also wouldn't run it as more than a two-of. Some people prefer a more disruption-heavy Tidehollow Sculler focus but Sculler is much worse than Grunt in the late game. Others run Gatekeeper of Malakir which I haven't tried.
Believe me, I knew going into this that this deck wasn't going to be cheap. I've yet to attend a Modern event yet, I've just played against people between rounds at FNM, which is why I'm asking because I have absolutely no idea what to expect. Given that I'm a high school student, this will probably be my little project for a long time. Or I'll have to succumb to budget decks, but not without a fight.

I have a few questions about this deck before I get a list together and proxy it up.
1. How heavy black are we? It seems like a lot of the lists recently posted are incredibly heavy in black, and the double white spells in the primer are missing. Since I can't afford Lilis anytime soon, is it possible to play Brimaz?
2. What do I build for an unknown meta? I think Blade Splicer could be very good, but gets blanked by Bolt and anything with 4 toughness
3. What's the deal with Jotun Grunt? He doesn't seem very good to me at all. He dies if played early but on paper looks irrelevant in the late game.
4. And finally, is this a deck that is easily accessible. I'm a 16 year old who is unsatisfied with the event deck. We've already been over how much of it carries over, but is this a deck that can be put together for cheap? I know we hate budget talk, but the question still stands for a lot of players.

In Tokens your line to victory is pretty much always the same; play tokens, buff with +X/+X and vigilance, and swing for the win. I didn't think it was particularly weak after upgrading from the Event Deck base build, but I didn't find it very engaging either. In Dead Guy you have several possible lines to victory; Abyssal Persecutor, Spirit Tokens, or Pack Rat. Jotun Grunt can swing big when he has the depth in the graveyards to support him. All of the creatures can get much more deadly when they buff up with Grafted Wargear.
Other than that, Dead Guy (in the current build being played and discussed in this thread) is more removal intensive than Tokens and has card advantage from Dark Confidant and Liliana. It requires more thought and skill to play well.
Some players are running a lifegain variant that uses Restoration Angel and Kitchen Finks that has a different road to victory but I haven't played that deck and can't speak for it.
Thank you! I'll definitely upgrade the event deck to this. I'm just glad most of the contents carry over.

Try to get
4 dark confidant
2-3 liliana of the vei
3-4 thoughtseize
5-7 fetches
4 godless shrines
And you good to go.
Thanks! Is there anything else I should know? I really want to know how similarly the two decks play. The obvious differnce is that one is swinging with little guys while the other is swinging with one big guy. What other differences are there?

Hey guys I'm back! I have a few questions and I really need some help. I received the Modern Event deck for my birthday. However, I am having trouble enjoying BW Tokens as a whole. I feel that it is far too vulnerable to certain decks and relies on drawing good cards, something that the deck cannot set up. Thus, I am in a tight spot. Now I know I love midrange startegies, and I mean LOVE. Is the event deck easily upgradeable into BW Midrange? Do the decks play very similarly? Am I just stuck in a trap?

Sorry about the double post of my list. The page screwed up and I had to shut down my internet connection, and I couldn't find the post anywhere, so I retyped it again, thus the difference of wording. I actully had to do this three times. I'm gonna replace Dismember with Go for the throat (Thanks for pointing out the fact that Dismember does'nt actually kill Percy. You would think being rippedripped limb from limb would kill just about anythung, but not a giant demon, apparently.) Now what should I sideboard for an unknown meta?

I edited my list. I cut Hero, Brimaz, one Pack Rat, one Castigate, and one Tidehollow Sculler and put in an Abyssal Persecutor package and two Sorin, Solemn Visitor. I swapped Night's Whisper for Sign in Blood and Doom Blade for Dismember.
I know that I shoukd probably have two Mutavaults and an Urborg, and I'll throw those in when I get them. I do own one Mutavault, but I don't want to run it because having three colorless sources seems awkward, but I haven't played the deck yet so how woul I know? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Alright I made some changes to my list. I cut Brimaz, Hero of Bladehold, one Castigate, one Pack rat, and one Tidehollow Sculler and added an Abyssal Persecutor package and two Sorin
My bdget can't really accomodate for cutting the Caves right now. I do own one Mutavault, and I'll throw it in once I get another and an Urborg. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The issue with mana fixing is that I have no idea how much I need. Cutting Brimaz does actually bring the deck down a lot. Alright, I'll rework the deck and have a list up tomorrow.

That's really neat actually. Abyssal Prosecutor seem like a reasonable win con. Because I can't afford Bob, I might keep Brimaz in because he blocks really efficiently and can win the game easy. Mu only concern with Prosecutor is that such a win con seems easy to disrupt, and if I can't find a sac outlet he kind of screws me over. I'll edit my list so accomedate him though. On a side note, the primer should be updated to include him. He's not mentioned anywhere.

So after looking through the primer, I decided to make a budget list for this deck that I can upgrade later on. I'm in an "Unknown Meta" situation, so thre list is probably a little clunky. I do a few of the decks that are present, and I'll get to those later
I know very little about my meta. I've played a few games casually against Anafenza's Company, and as far as I can tell it's not running anything out of the ordinary. Soul Sisters is also running around, but I don't know if this is the typical mono white list or one of the BW variants that crop up every now an then. The deck I'm afraid of is a local Jund deck dubbed "Mono Black Jund." It's a VERY heavy black Jund deck that relies on Liliana and Phyrexian Obliterator (!) to close out games. In fact, I'm considering biting the bullet and cutting Doom Blade for Dismember for additional ways to deal with this deck mainboard! (Would you rather take 4 life or sac 5 permanents?) It appears to run the typical Jund burn and disruption packages, so nothing weird there. My meta is very small (We've failed to fire multiple times.) and in a 3-4 round tournament, I know I will have to go up against this deck. That's where secret sideboard tech comes in! (TA-DAA!) Once I can afford it, Runed Halo s going in the board so I can deal with said Jund deck post board. However, I don't know how I should setup my sideboard from here because I don't know my meta! I've never played in the Modern tournament, I've just jammed some games casually between rounds in a draft with a Goblins list. Any help is greatly appreciated!

My budget is currently at about $100-150. I can definitely scrape up money for upgrades over time. My problem is that I want a fun and rather obscure deck to play, and I'm sick of playing Goblins. I'll definitely try Arena and the suggestions people have given me. Thanks guys!

Unfortunately, that's not an option for me right now. I can't spend money to build a deck, and than spend more money to build something else. It's just not feasible for my budget. What if I just ran ton of discard to make up for the lack of card draw? Sin Collector, Duress, Despise, and Tidehollow Sculler sounds like a good start. I have mono red together, but I really want to try something new. A year of just mono red has really gotten me bored woth the deck.

Is there any chance that a deck like this can be built on a budget? I love midrange strategies but cards like Dark Confident and Liliana are bit out of reach for my budget, as is Thoughtseize. I might be able to slowly build up the necessary funds for some of these cards, but what do I put in to replace them?
