I'm not familiar with bear anatomy, but they will have weak spots. If human kicks and punches could do serious damage to these spots (genitals, temples, eyes, throat...), then you could kill a bear.
... Guns. Not kill bear. Many shots to kill bear. From a gun. How is this not registering?
Ok, here. This is a gun. These are shots from a gun. It takes multiple shots from a gun to kill a grizzly. Multiple. Multiple shots. FROM A GUN.
You could also take the least likable of your group and have him stuff his arm down the bear's throat, trying to make him choke.
Shove his arm down a bear's throat. Ok. So he'd have to get close enough to the bear without the bear swatting him away, get the bear to open its mouth, and shove his arm in, without dying or, you know, getting his arm ripped off by the enormous teeth.
Sure, totally doable.
Hell, even if you have no sticks and stones, you can use the skull of an already fallen comrade after the bear is done with him and feeding on another fallen guy.
Shots. From a gun. Multiple. Still don't kill bear.
You presented this topic saying that lives were at stake if they did not respond, because you might throw naked men at a bear in real life. To put it bluntly, your presentation of this question was absurd, and considering how absurd the question was already, I cannot see how their reaction to your emails was surprising.
If a grizzly bear can survive multiple shots from a shotgun and keep going, I'm pretty sure it would be able to deal with some sharpened sticks and edged stones...
Yes.
There is nothing a group of human beings can do to a bear. A single hit from a bear's claws or teeth will incapacitate a human being. You cannot do anything to a bear, its hide is too thick, to the point where bears can survive gunfire. You cannot surround a bear, it will break through your ranks. Unless you have numbers into at least fifty or more men, you will not have a chance against a bear, and even then I fail to see how you'd actually kill it.
See, this is why I included 'lives may be at stake' in my emails to the scientists. I am certain most of them read the email, laughed and/or shook their fist into the heavens, and then deleted it...these people likely did not take it seriously, albeit I presented it as a professional and a gentleman.
I still can't believe how many people are overrating the killing power of a bear. Youtube bear kills and you can see that while they are definitely big and deadly, they aren't competent combatants by any stretch. They mostly kill by tackling and then biting the neck or body and just kind of mauling them or just holding the bite until they die. They wouldn't be able to handle multiple targets at once with much efficiency at all.
They will be if they're humans. Humans can't survive much, and once again, bears have claws. A bear can plow through human beings. It's not like you'll be able to surround him.
Ok, but a human is born with a larger brain and thumbs that allows it to use the environment that must exist for either creature to be alive in the first place.
Still, natural weapons does not include tools. Human beings do not naturally have tools. It's why they're called tools in the first place.
A bears weapons are it's strength, claws and such.
That is it's natural weaponry.
A humans natural weaponry will be pieces of wood, rocks etc.
You're not even going to come remotely close to fudging this.
The bear naturally has teeth, claws, etc. Human being's natural weaponry are its teeth, nails, and strength. Sadly, none of that means a dang thing against a grizzly.
Even at our most basic, and stripped from all the trappings of our modern life, we are still tool using creatures and to deny us of the capability to use makeshift weaponry is the same thing as denying the bear it's claws and natural strength.
No, it isn't, because a bear is born with claws and born with teeth. A human being is not born with rocks.
Classic example of skewing numbers. Male bears can weigh over 1000 lbs, but typically weigh 400-770 lbs. This is a significant difference. Remember, the scenario is in the most average way possible, that is, the bear definitely weighs 400-770 lbs. because it is a typical bear, at least for this thought experiment.
Ok, and that black bear the guy took out could have weighed less than he did. Doesn't change the fact that this is a grizzly bear.
There's a BIG difference between killing something human weight and killing something that's over 1000 pounds. Also, grizzly bears? Significantly more vicious.
Anyone who said 25+ is wrong, I think. Ever heard of hysterical strength? Under normal circumstances, a human uses less than one third of his muscle fibres. In rare cases, such as in a life/death situation, people use all of them. People have been know to lift cars in situations like these.
None of that matters against a bear. He has claws and teeth! We don't!
If I remember correctly a few years ago a guy in either BC or Alberta got attacked by a addolecent Grizzly and survived by knocking the bear out with a rear naked choke. Im far from 100% on the details but it was widely reported on both the major national newscasts here.
Adolescent grizzly? Grizzlies are born weighing a pound. They end up weighing over a thousand pounds. Taking out something in the intermediary state doesn't quite compare to taking out the real adult variety.
Ok, two humans. The bear weighs about six times more than the two of you combined, made of muscle, extremely thick fur, razor sharp claws and teeth, very ferocious. You are helpless against a bear.
Thanks FTMB. I've emailed a few 'bear experts' that I found on google, but none responded. I think your approach will more likely yield results. Keep us posted.
Probably because they're laughing so hard at the idea of people arguing two human beings can take a bear down.
I'm honestly wondering how many people here have actually seen a grizzly bear.
Well, leaves aren't 100+ pounds accelerating at 9.8 meters/second-squared.
ledzep, I want to give this to you, but the problem is you'd need a very, very tall tree to fall from. You'd also have to hope the Grizzly doesn't just climb the tree itself.
Attempting to blind a bear will do nothing, for a couple of reasons:
1. If you're trying to blind a bear, you have to get to its eyes. Which are in the front of its body. In its face. Next to its enormous jaw. In the same area as its front paws, which are large and have claws.
2. Bears have TERRIBLE eyesight anyway. They operate largely through smell.
3. You're engaging the thing in freaking MELEE COMBAT. Even if we were to take as a given that you blinded the already-almost-blind thing that weighs 1200 pounds, has claws, teeth, and an extremely thick hide, a thing that can survive bullets, congratulations, you've still done nothing to help you kill this thing.
2 of my friends even said 30+, which is blatantly outrageous.
It's blatantly outrageous only because 2 out of all of your friends were not intelligent enough to view this as the correct answer.
Honestly, haven't you all been to a zoo before? Have you seen a bear?
I don't see how any number of humans could kill a bear. What, exactly, is there that a human being could do? The only thing I can think of that would kill a grizzly is to smother it with human corpses in a giant manpile until it gets exhausted. There's nothing a human being can do to a bear. These things weigh over a thousand pounds and have teeth and claws.
Honestly, have none of you seen a bear protection suit? Look at that thing and tell me what it could do to human flesh.
It is not only judo, but the general techniques of martial arts in general, that would help. People who train actively know how to effectively dodge attacks and have faster reflexes than your average joe that is fit and goes to the gym.
*Blinks* Please tell me this is a joke so I have some confidence in the people on this site.
It's a bear. 1200 pounds and with claws, teeth, and thick fur. You cannot MMA a bear!

Your first sentence contradicts your last.
What are you kidding me? This is probably a giant joke to them.

Black bear = 155 to 600 pounds.
Grizzly bear = over 1000 pounds.

How would you strangle something that big? How would you even get near it?
Because we have GUNS.
And not all guns can kill bears!

That is absolutely ridiculous.
