Went to the SCG Open this past weekend. Didn't do very well, but my round 1 in legacy was glorious.
My Smallpox v RUG Delver. It's a very good matchup for me but he does win game 2. Game 3, he hits Cursed Scroll and Mishra's Factory with Surgical Extraction, leaving me with zero cards left that can deal damage and excising 5 cards from my library. However, I destroyed every land in his deck that could produce colored mana. At game's end, I have a Liliana with over 20 counters, there are no cards in either library, and I win the match because he was on the draw and drew as many extra cards as he had removed from my library.
On the art issue, I am quite fond of Pharika's Cure, it is quite beautiful, yet dark and mysterious. For the name I am liking the first idea more as well, but I will try to see if I can conjure something better.
I xcan see the new murder being mainboardable, the the coolest card revealed from last night spoilers, was the whip it looks like it's going to be so sweet in any mono-black builds.
For T2 purposes, it's of note that Obzedat's exile trigger trumps the Whip's exile clause.
@therestless, does your cube include phyrexian obliterators? Because that is a card I am thinking of working with in a Modern devotion deck if the mechanic seems strong enough.
I like the card, but can't justify quad B the way it's currently setup.
Hello again, checking in after a while where I have been busy with lots of things. Regarding the new set I really like the devotion mechanic and I hope they will try to push it, since it might need some help arriving right after a multicolour set.
Devotion is a cool mechanic. Conveniently for us, significant 'devotion to black' is a natural hazard of the color. I'm optimistic about its effect in cube around such as Necropotence, Geralf's Messenger, Bloodghast, and Nether Traitor.
So I've been toying with the idea of making a EDH deck around Maelstrom Wanderer, and I stumble upon the fact that our local EDH mastermind *cough*rat*cough* has a deck built around that cool guy. I'm wondering if you have a little write up on the deck? I remember you used to have explanations for some of your decks (at least I think), and I wouldn't mind taking a gander at it. He just seems like a fun guy to toy around with, plus I like me those colors I'm such a noob when it comes to EDH though so this will be a challenge.
When I first formed the deck, I had just retired my mono-red Warp World deck (with Ankh of Mishra, Zo-Zu the Punisher, and Knollspine Dragon), but I wanted to keep Warping in some capacity. RUG is the perfect color combination for it, and Maelstrom Wander is the best general for such a creature-centric deck. And so this was fashioned:
No instants, though a few ways to grant things flash, no planeswalkers, 5 sorceries, and a lot of incredibly efficient cards that fail against Torpor Orb. I have actually used Warp World as removal for Torpor Orb (incidentally, the Warp basically ended the game in my favor).
On the topic of Maelstrom Wanderer, it's pretty simple. Ramp, cascade, swing, win. If the cascade hits something like Plasm Capture, counter your own general and recast him for just 2 next turn. Also, Food Chain the big guy.
I have seriously considered including Food Chain, particularly as I've played the combo deck in legacy, but that would take more restructuring than I care to do at the moment.
Top on the list of things I want to fit in the deck is Fierce Empath.
So in other news, its sad to say, but the Izzet are retired. The Triple Alliance is now down one member.
This is pretty surprising. They always seemed to be really active in the past. Wonder what happened?
Thinking about it, this thread has slowed down considerably.
Well, submitted some stuff for the clan contest before the deadline. Apparently only one other clan has submitted so far, so there's an extension. Didn't have any original work for bonus points, but I got to make an art swap for Ihsan's Shade as the legendary creature.
Was Korlash really that good? He seems like a gloried nightmare to me.
Nightmare doesn't jump you from 4 to 8 mana in a turn. He happens to be one of my favorite cards ever, but it's of note that he was in T2 with Grim Harvest.
Noticed that, but I didn't have much to talk about other than bringing up Path of Exile again.
I'm a fan of doing another tournament but I recall some contention as to what client could be used. Cockatrice got a C&D and MWS hasn't been a supported program in ages.
I am very curious to see what comes from the 'god' cycle of Theros. Also, Sphere of Safety will probably be a real card with an enchantment-themed set.
So how did everyone do at the M14 prerelease? I...didn't go
Honestly the decision to have predatorzergborgterminators slivers be the set mechanic was the thing that kept me away. I refuse to touch one of those abominations
Basically played bant removal with a double-color costs in all three colors and very little fixing. Almost every match was durdle until I find Air Servant, find out they don't have removal for Air Servant, win. Did a cut to top 8 draft, which is odd for a prerelease but whatever. Went P1P1 Corrupt but the deck did not come together. Only two Corrupts were opened at the table, and I did get both of them, but I really wanted 1-2 more. Last time I drafted that deck the coreset had Sign in Blood, which I sorely missed. Ended up with only 20 playables and 20 swamps, barely scraped out round one, and top 4 split for 9 packs each. Opened nothing of relevance.
Why would you be disappointed with Nighthowler?

Hero's Downfall is great.

From a design perspective, a lot of the cards we've seen are not 'safe' and I'm curious what other solutions we'll be getting to keep them fair.

Go go Ihsan's Shade!
Interestingly, judging won't actually be done by the clans for this one. Just enjoy the novel pictures.

Anyone have some originals that would fit? If not, I'll just get to scouring the internet.
And it arrived today. Apparently SCG has these on their buy list at $350 a box...
To be fair, it is a cool box.
I'm a fan of doing another tournament but I recall some contention as to what client could be used. Cockatrice got a C&D and MWS hasn't been a supported program in ages.

Another clan contest is up. Looks like it could be a super quick one, though bonus points if we have any artists in the house with a backlog of sketches.

Saw those SDCC Planeswalker boxes posted on eBay and picked one up for $235 shipped. Now it looks they're all $350+ and climbing.
Had an awkward sealed pool. 3 of my rares were in green. I played green. I played none of those rares (2x Into the Wilds, 1x Oath of the Ancient Wood).
