Speaking of over costed win moar cards, I was watching some deck techs on As Foretold/Living End decks and started wondering what would be good, or fun sideboard cards for that match. I came to the conclusion that it would be hilarious to run a couple Borborygmos Enraged to ride the coattails of their Living End. Totally not a great strategy, but I figured I would share this comical strategy.
Honestly I don't mind having the deck lean towards aggro. Hollow One and Chandra's Phoenix didn't cross my mind. I do have more Flame Jabs so I'll try out using them in place of the Molten Vortex. If they work out, the Phoenixes might be a better option for recursion.
Hello everyone! I've come back to tinkering with my R/G Low(ish) budget Loam deck. I was considering looking for a replacement for Flinthoof Boar and found three cards that won't break the bank. Untamed Kavu, Sylvan Advocate and Flameblade Adept. I can see the advantages and disadvantages of each but would like to hear some input from the community. All three are so low on the market I could pick up a playset of each and test of course... but I still appreciate the input. Any advise is appreciated. Thank you!
So I'm still working out a sideboard using what I own. The local meta seems to have Tron, Bogles, Bant Eldrazi, 8rack, Merfolk, Infect, Naya Burn, Scapeshift and Lantern Control. I know artifact/enchantment removal would benefit both againat some strategies and their likely sideboard options for me. The rest is just having options against different deck strengths and general good ideas. I know it's not perfect... but I'm hoping that It'll test well. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.
So I've been off and on building a budget Red/Green Loam for a while. I know it's not perfect, and I'll accept any suggestions. I've been debating on taking Young Pyromancer and Magmatic Insight out for Crawling Sensation and Vessel of Nascency but I haven't been able to test to see if it would be worth it.
I am also looking for sideboard advice on a budget. I know the local meta has Tron, Infect, 8rack, Naya Burn and Merfolk as regular attendees. Edit: a coworker of mine said he's faced Lantern Control and Bant Eldrazi at the LGS too. They only recently startrd holding Modern again so it's going to be my first time playing the format in a competitive setting.
I'll have to come back around with a list to show you guys (tis late when I remembered to check here). Given that my local store hasn't held modern in a while I'm not sure what the current meta environment looks like so I'm struggling on what to do for a sideboard...
Hey everyone, I've got a question to pitch at you. I run a RG budgety Loam deck and in the early build used Wild Hunger as a way to push damage through. I currently use Ghor-Clan Rampager and a lone Skarrg, the Rage Pits. Now I was looking over ideas to toy with and thought of Mina and Denn, Wildborn. The card works kind of like Skarrg, the Rage Pits although more vulnerable and with an added cost but it also lends an added benefit and allows you to pick up a land to chuck with Seismic Assault or Molten Vortex. What are your thoughts? It sounds neat but with the card being a creature it's vulnerabilities are a problem.
@Trifling - boar is probably much better than ape. It having 3 power and toughness (essentially likely) is relevant against zoo if you have zoo in your meta, the fact it can come off the top and get haste is pretty nice. Ape is fine when you don't have other options, but probably not better than ooze, which gets huge as you clean a board up with assault or vortex, etc. I would switch ape for more ooze and perhaps a ghor-clan rampager or 2 where you have room. It can give your deck a more aggressive zoo feel to it and make it less yard reliant. Also makes combat a nightmare for your opponent. If you have 1 card in hand and you attack, your opponent has to guess whether it's 2 damage to kill their creature with an assault activation or 4 additional power, plus trample from blood rush.
Oh! I didn't think of Ghor-Clan Rampager. Funny enough when I first set out to build this I was thinking of running Wild Hunger for a similar effect, thought the Rampager is better since they won't see it coming, can't be countered in the conventional way, and could be a dude on the field if I really need one. I will experiment with that. Thank you!
Thoughts: Since I am running Young Pyromancer I am hesitant to replace Flame Jab with Molten Vortex. At least at the moment that seems like the logical thing to move out to try the new diet Assault. Maybe one of each? I think this is more a matter of what works best for me, but I figured I would put it out there.
Hello! I haven't posted since page 18, but I have been lurking the thread while slowly building up and modifying my RG Loam build. This is where I am at now.
Manamorphose is here mostly to help with color fixing, be a draw to turn into dredge and maybe make and elemental from Young Pyromancer. I'm looking into swapping them out for the new Magmatic Insight since the card draw can help dig into my colors. I do intend on getting more Stomping Grounds and Wooded Foothills in the future. I was thinking of eventually getting rid of my Flinthoof Boars for more Scavenging Oozees and maybe Grim Lavamancer; he seems like a neat fit. I'm not sure yet. I have very little opportunity to test, but I like the Boar's haste option.... I'm just not sure if he's good. He feels like a nice paralelle to Kird Ape.
I wanted to share my slow-and-steady progress and get some critique. Thank you all in advanced
Well, being on a budget is going to impact your deck's effectiveness. I'd recommend sticking to just two colors (RG if that's not apparent, haha). The mana base is going to be the most important part. You'll want to look for Stomping Grounds, finishing off your playset of Copperline Gorge, a Raging Ravine and possibly Treetop Village, and probably 2-3 Fire-Lit Thicket. Goblin Guide should definitely be in there as a 4-of. Lightning Bolt and Faithless Looting in addition to Loams and Assaults as said before...
Kird Ape and Flinthoof Boar are appealing; One for the single mana symbols in their costs, and also because they are pretty cheap. Ash Zealot isn't too expensive, and taking a Bolt to Flashback Faithless Looting shouldn't hinder things if I loot into lands to pitch, or dig up answers.
I hadn't looked at the price of Thrun, the Last Troll since he was standard. I was kind of surprised to see him averaging $10, compared to his $30-$50 before. Even if I grab one, that's be worth it.
Thank you, I'll try to take the time in the near future to hammer out what I want to save up for, and perfect a new list. In the mean time, after some playtesting, I'll see what I can do now with some of the things I already own (Swapping Shard Volley for Lightning Bolt, Desperate Ritual for Manamorphose, etc...)
What direction are you looking to take your deck? Do you want a more aggressive build or do you want to work toward a more controlling list? You're current list is all over the place and being on a budget is going to directly affect what is reasonable for you to build. If I knew what you were looking to do, then I'd be able to get you better recommendations. At the very least, you really should run 4 Loams and 3-4 Assaults and Shard Volleys should really be Lightning Bolts like mykatdied said. Other than that I'd need to know more about what your preferef playstyle is before I can help more.
I would definitely say I lean on an aggressive playstyle. Although I understand how to play control, I'm a poor control player when under pressure. I am hoping to get my hands on the other 2 Loams.
Manamorphose doesn't net you mana but if you need fixing that is probably where you would wanna go since it cantrips so it could be an extra dredge for loam in a turn. Plus it replaces itself with mana to cast the dredged loam and it can help you cast assault if you only have access to 1 red and 2 green.
For the time being, I could opt Manamorphose in place of my Desperate Rituals. If/When I get another Seismic Assault and drop Borborygmos Enraged, I won't need the ramping power the Rituals can provide to shoot him out. Like you said, it can turn :symg::symg: into the :symr::symr: I may need to drop Assault or Crusher.
Changes I would make and I would make even more but I think you want your deck to be somewhat creature based and aggressive so this is what I would stick with.
Out - 28
-4 God's Eye, Gate to the Reikai - Really no point and colorless mana hurts your ability to drop a quick seismic assault
-4 Gruul Turf - kinda slow and doesn't fix mana the way you probably want
-2 Forest - You don't have a huge need for basic forests since you are mainly red
-4 Mountain? Maybe for a fetchland to help dig out the color you need
-1 Borborygmos Enraged - Wayyy too slow. Unless you are reanimating you probably shouldn't ever see this.
-4 Wild Cantor - Not necessary
-4 Tilling Treefolk - Also not necessary, loam does this better
-3 Desperate Ritual - Not a bad idea but I don't think you really need it, just seems unecessary
-4 Shard Volley - Just play lightning bolt. just because you can recur lands doesn't mean you should have to.
-2 Wild Hunger - I get the trample is probably what you want but if there is one thing assault decks do well it is deal with chump blockers. You shouldn't need this
In - 28
+2 Copperline Gorge - Good early mana fixing
+4 Misty Rainforest/Arid Mesa? A little help mana fixing, deck thinning, and an extra target for Loam
+4 Fire-lit Thicket - Great mana fixing, very necessary with RRR assault CMC
+4 Stompin Ground - Fetchable green or red mana source.
+4 Goblin Guide - Very reliable and great aggressive beater
+2 Life from the loam - You just really want to always see one of these
+1 Seismic Assault - You want to see these more often as well
+0/3 Groundswell - If you want the pump spell go with this since you can easily recur and make land drops.
+4 Lightning Bolt - Better than shard volley
+2 Flame Jab - Recurrable creature control
+1/2 Eternal Witness - Helps you get dredged spells/permanents back
+0/4 Deathrite Shaman - Awesome yard control, also can help fix mana and ramp into assault. If you decide you don't need a pump spell or witness, I would play 4 deathrite shaman and 1 witness.
Thank you for the input. Eternal Witness is good. If/when I get the other Loams, I had planned on dropping the Tilling Treefolk, and a couple Witnesses would fit in. Outside of the rare lands, I have access to many of the card you suggested;Goblin Guide, Lightning Bolt and Groundswell I have an okay amount of. I have 4 Flame Jabs. I was debating on using them in place of the Shard Volleys originally, but worried that 1 damage at sorcery would be inefficient compared to 3 at instant. (with the land sac just adding to the Crusher's power). Man, if I had access to ANY Deathrite Shamans they would have been an instant include. Where Wild Cantor is currently sitting as a mana filter in my build, the shaman could be a so much more... It's definitely a card I would like to get my hands on.
Hello, I figured I'd look for some advise. (this is my first post on mtgsalvation)
I've recently put together a deck I'm hoping to use when my local shop begins modern tournaments (or if my friends want to build for the format). I've never built for an eternal format before, but given that I have a decent collection of Modern legal cards, I would try my hand. I actually built my deck based on some things I saw in the list for Modern Masters (figuring there has to be a reason why they were there), and was later informed that it loosely resembles the "Assault Loam" archetype. I had never known of this deck type until this was mentioned, and I would have to say what I have currently does look similar. This is what I have:
Literally, I came up with this just thinking "Countryside Crusher is cool, and I like things that mess with the graveyard... Seismic Assault and Life from the Loam fit!" and just filled in with what I could afford (less than $30 budget) and what I have. It feels strong, and very aggressive, but wouldn't mind input. Anything out of my price range I can file away for the future, or seek out low-budget alternatives to. Looking around here (I read through some of this thread, and else where to compare) I imagine a common suggestion will be to up my Loams and Assaults to 4, and take out filler creatures for another color (Black from the looks of things ). If this is the case, I don't mind hearing it. Thanks in advanced for any replies! From my tappedout account

Magmatic Insight is a card I've had a few feel bad moments with. More often than not, I have the land to pitch but in some cases I end up pitching it to Faithless Looting. I'm considering swapping them out for Tormenting Voice and/or Cathartic Reunion.
