Storm: try your best to avoid Pyromancer Ascension resolving. Bring in your graveyard hate. Kill Electromancer. If all else fails, try to counter the first ritual.
Amulet: rarely played against this deck, but Path (for Titan) is invaluable. Also, Tec Edge/Ghost Quarter for the "pump" lands (Sunhome, Kessig Wolf Run). It's weird because they can kill you really fast but also are really slow if they don't land an Amulet right away.
Hey guys! I stopped playing UWR Midrange after Nacatl was unbanned so I'm not posting here anymore, but I've just read Ari Lax's article on SCG where he talks about all Modern decks from PT Valencia that had 7-2-1 or better records. UWR had three decks on that list, 1 Control and 2 Midrange (identical lists). Just came here to post the midrange list hoping it will help:
The reasoning here is that Geist isn't that good anymore and that Blade Splicer + Resto Angel is really good vs Zoo and combo (when you need a fast clock).
GP Richmond should shed some more light over the Geist issue. I fully expect Zoo to be in the top 8 and continue to be one of the most played decks. The tournament will be big, more than 3k players already pre-registered. ò.Ó
So, I've been playing the deck lately and I side out Geist quite frequently (second only to Remand). Do you guys do the same or am I doing something wrong? I seldom side out all the copies, but usually will take out 1 or 2 for more removal against decks with lots of potential blockers.
Chill guys, he's giving another point of view and that's always welcome. Don't make the mistake of not hearing different opinions, be it in MtG or anywhere else in your life.
If Fae and Zoo gets popular, then Electrolyze will be a lot worse, unfortunately. UBx Fae will also have the Thoughtseize/IoK => BB opening and that's really strong. Decks relying on Pyroclasm will also be worse if that happens. Volcanic Fallout will be a SB card at most, given it does nothing vs Zoo.
IMHO UWR Wafo will change more than the Midrange version, but both will have to adapt. I would listen to any input and adjust carefully.
Well, yeah, Timely will also be good, but Helix is an instant and costs less (so you can Snap it back earlier too). That said, straight UW can be good, but Bolt is awesome and red gives access to some really good SB tools.
Yeah, in theory Geist got a bit worse, but I would test a bit and try to not panic now. Maybe you could move them to the SB for the right matchups (in case Zoo and Fae is everywhere), maybe cut some copies or even all copies replacing it with flyers. Time will tell.
MemoryLapse, just because Geist won a GP doesn't automatically mean it's the be all end all. Reid Duke got 2nd at Pro Tour with Boggles. Where is Boggles now? Still in tier 2.
I don't want to engage in this discussion but remember that was the Players Championship, not a PT. It was a rather small tourney (16 players) in which Reid "metagamed" perfectly as most players were on UWR. A GP is a very different beast.
Yeah, don't be too concerned about the combo. You should try them like a resilient aggro deck. Counters aren't that good because of Pod and Persist dudes, but a bunch of removal and a bit of pressure will get there.
You can use Shadow of Doubt, Aven Mindcensor and Pillar of Flame/Magma Spray. Combine that with the usual burn/removal suite, some Paths, artifact removal and a bit of graveyard hate and the matchup isn't a problem.
