The examples you gave are good but it covers such a wide range.
Spooky creatures (Goyf or Wurmcoil)
It is very rarely a dead draw, and since you know what you are playing by the time you bring it in (Game 2 or 3) you will be able to name at least one card you saw in G1 that you don't want to have to deal with in the other games.
I had it in the SB of an Esper control deck I had and played against GR Tron several times (my buddy was running it). I stick Runed Halo naming Karn and the drop a Stony Silence and I win.
Yeah I actually play mono U Tron quite a bit. I know when I am playing U Tron one of the last things I want to see come out is Geist. A resolved Geist is very hard to deal with for me.
Sundering does hurt, and Path makes it worse usually. I guess hard counters with Cryptic help. The thing about playing against U Tron is that very often they will slam Sundering ASAP, especially if they don't have a ton of experience with the deck. Should that happen Mana Leak generally answers the issue.
Still that would definitely be a race. I would probably go the burn on that one and just try to end it before Titan/Slaver gets going.
How does this deck do against RG Tron? I know UW Tron (and U Tron) have a really rough time with Geist. I assume if you bring in a couple Stony Silence and a couple Runed Halo (naming Karn) you can race them pretty easily with Geist?
Just need to counter O Stone and Pyro right (although i guess Stony takes care of O Stone)
I ordered two Cryptic Commands today...I think that put me in the doghouse for a bit with the wife...
But on the other hand I am building this deck again. Yay.
It will still be fetchless because lolmoney but I am excited to have the Cryptics added. I am thinking I am going for 3 Geist and no Splicers this time. Geist is just such a fast clock. I will also be mainboarding two Wall of Omens because they have always been great for me.
Thanks guys. Yeah it was just a thought. I have a Gideon Jura sitting around gathering dust...as well as some Stormbreath Dragons. Stormbreath is one I am strongly considering because his pro-white just seems so relevant...
If I transition this to more Control-ish than I am going to run two Gideon's I think
EDIT: I think I'm going with Gideon. This way Ajani can have a buddy. Plus I don't need another 4/4 flyer for 5 when I have the Colonnades I guess.
Went 3-1 at FNM tonight. Mostly played home brews. I lost to a RDW with a splash of white. First game was very close. Second game I tapped out like a moron to activate Colonnade, killing his Goblin Guide, and he then resolved an Assemble the Legion. Yeah I had no answer for that pre-board and couldn't race it.
Geist and Blade Splicer in a 3/3 split went great. I don't know who was better...Geist on turn 3 could not be answered but Blade Splicer's synergy with Resto was great. I realized that Assemble the Legion could actually be good for the top end of my curve so I am going to try one in there. Electrolyze is going purely Sideboard for now. I played a couple games with the guy who won tonight after FNM was over. He was running Infect and I beat him 2-1. Electrolyze just neutered his deck, but was not good enough tonight to warrant MB.
I am running more or less the stock list with Counterflux instead of Cryptic Command.
I have seen a lot of back forth on here regarding Cryptic. My opinion is that a midrange list running Geist should also run Cryptic Command. Cryptic synergizes with Geist in an big way. It allows the deck to switch into an aggressive role and become the "beatdown" when the time is appropriate. I think that is very important, and critical to winning with this deck. Often with Geist in play Cryptic Command is "tap your dudes, draw a card, deal six damage." Additionally, Cryptic is our strongest "mid-range" card, and our best for generating extra value, and getting a little bit ahead when we spent the first part of the game trading cards one for one with our opponent.
When/if Cryptic drops down to a reasonable price I will grab a couple for sure. In the meantime I will have to force Geist and Splicer damage through by quickly turning my opponents blockers sideways when he isn't looking. It's very effective.
Try a 2/2 split then. 6 or more three drops, even a deck with 25 lands is too crowded. Its better to either split, or commit to one or the other. If your meta is less dude heavy, why not vendilion clique over either one?
I would love to run Clique but not for what she is currently priced at.
I think you're right though, I need to cut a couple three drops. I might just SB the Counterflux for a Spell Snare to try and clear things up.
I am thinking a 3/2 Geist/Splicer split will work. If Geist gets pwned at FNM I'll switch the split to favor Splicer I think.
