Wow bro, it sounds like you have had a rough time on reddit, sorry for that, so far I have only found it helpful, but for the record when I see my bros from MTGS, I only have upvotes and love for you.
The Competitive EDH subreddit is currently the best avenue for discussion of competitive decks and strategies. The community there is toxic, but the lists are usually good.
Well yes and no, the regular folks in cEDH(who I am one of) are not toxic, the problem with reddit in general is there are a lot of visitors who like to troll and derail posts. The good thing about the cEDH reddit is, it is moderated so you don't get things like someone necro threading posts from 2010 on irrelevant decks, and I see that here all the time.
I've been really tempted to build a Sharuum deck and was wondering if this is a good base to base my deck of off even though it is an old post?
I dunno, it has really fallen behind many other decks, Sharuum is slow, and as Ajacobik said if you are not in a totally cutthroat meta it might be good, but I think if you don't have the cards already to build it, you will end up spending a lot of money for a Tier 2 deck where as you could have invested in something more powerful. Even budget versions of Zur, Jenera, Tasigur, Teferi PW, Yisan, Prossh, or Animar just leave Sharuum in the dust. If you are only going for fun factor, I still think Sharuum is very fun with all the interaction choices, but if I want to wreck face, I go with one of the previously mentioned.
Personally, I believe that Whir of Inventions is better suited to a Memnarch deck than a Sharuum deck.
I plan on using it in Teferi stax, its instant so it can tap down Winter Orb right before your turn. Sharuum's current problem is the lack of speed against other faster combo decks in the format, unfortunately a UUU spell is not going to help us go faster.
Ive put the deck down until we get some real printings. Im thoroughly disappointed in how Sharuun has become outclassed due to lack of.receng printings while everything else has gotten better by leaps and bounds. I feel that Sharuum's ability to shrug off creature sweepers in a creature dominated format is what made her great and healthy for a competitive edh format. It will be a few years before an artifact-centric set idea is revisited. Until then, her deckbox will continue to collect dust on the shelf.
Since shops in Vintage got kicked in the junk, I've been playing more EDH. I've made more changes to the list with improved results. We've only ayes 3-4 man games recently due to player availability mid week, but the deck has combo's off more in these last 8 games than in the last 12 months. I'll post more about it at work, and share my feelings on the slots when I get in.
Do you have an updated list you are willing to share? Due to the new mulligan rules, my Wanderer deck is not as good as it used to be so I am thinking about making Sharuum again, though my luck has been very poor with trinkets.
I forgot Copy Artifact and Blasting Station. As I told you, I've been playing Teferi exclusively for a few weeks and haven't even seen my Esper duals in months.
I'm preparing a long post with my updated list that I'll post tonight per Frank_Glascock's request. Explored themes will include the nature of competitive EDH, meta arms races, and the overall position of Engine Sharuum as an archetype in the wider CEDH meta. Succinctly put, the engine variant is not capable of easily taking tables from the best decks in the format (Zur stax, Zur Doomsday, Jeleva storm, Derevi stax). Winning is possible, but largely dependent on the opponents hitting poor draws; it's an uphill battle from the get-go. If you're tapping out to play a Trading Post or a Mind's Eye while your opponent is drawing 30 cards with Ad Nauseam or Necropotence, you WILL lose that game. If you allow your opponents to have total control of the stack because you refuse to play counterspells, you WILL lose on your opponent's Doomsday turn, and you WILL lose to a resolved Stasis when your opponent has the infamous Bird Wizard in play. If you keep substituting instant-and-sorcery removal for artifacts that poorly simulate the same ability in the name of synergy, you will be absolutely destroyed by the Stony Silence Zur tutors for--and similarly crushed by Null Rod, Rest in Peace, Kataki, and other easily-tutorable hate cards. I have a lot more to say on this topic, but it'll have to wait until I'm off work.
I have never been able to get trinket Sharuum to work in my meta, but I had a fair amount of success with a more control based Sharuum, so I see where you are coming from.
I have found Sharuum too weak and too predictable for my meta for the similar reasons you found at the GP, trying t
I have been considering going to more of a Ad Nauseam Sharuum build, but to be honest, my Tasigur deck wins a lot of games, and my Maelstrom Wanderer wins so much I don't even want to play it, its too abusive now.
This is the most painful thing I've ever read, lol.
I don't think Ad Nauseam is better than the engine build. Both decks are resilient, but the engine build is very difficult to neuter. When someone exiles Ad Nauseam, you lose the justification for a large number of your card choices.
Yeah its pretty sad, I have put so much money in my Sharuum deck to make it shiny, and my Wanderer/Tasigur decks with mostly cheap cards, win 10 times more. =/
Awesome report on the GP event at Atlanta, thank you for that.
I have found Sharuum too weak and too predictable for my meta for the similar reasons you found at the GP, trying to play trinkets ends up either clogging your deck, or powering up someone's Bane of Progress, you are always the first to eat removal even if you are not doing anything, and the only wins you get is from sneaking out the old Bitter Ordeal combo after they have left you no other options.

I also noticed the Top Commanders of EDH guys (the guys who sell deck lists) have also abandoned Sharuum.
Yeah, lost in translation... When I said "crack into" it was implied "crack in response to" its Moxnix-speak, its all his fault. (go read his Jeleva Storm and Prossh Storm threads)
That is not possible. LED is a mana ability with a timing restriction (instant). You cannot use its mana during the casting of a spell.
What you can do is :
- Crack LED, discard your hand. But Windfall is already in the graveyard.
- Cast Windfall, put it on the stack and pay with Manacrypt & Reflecting Pool, then you may crack LED and use the mana to cast things from your future new hand when Windfall would resolve.
Cast Windfall, crack LED in response for UUU, discard hand, draw new hand, its a gutsy move, but it can pay off big. Since you were going to discard your hand in the first place, the penalty for cracking LED is mitigated, and you have a new hand to try to use the mana on.
I'd love to regale you with tales of how I managed a turn 1 kill by cracking the LED into a god hand, but I did in fact play it safe. I dropped Station on turn 2, though, if that counts for anything.
Glad to hear you are winning with your Sharrum, I am on about 10 game losing streak, keep running into Rest in Peace, Aura Shards, Nekusar, hand destruction, you name it, my meta has it, 99 ways to screw my Sharuum deck. I think I need to build Arcum, he doesn't rely upon the graveyard.
