Player plays Muscle Sliver from Hand
Crystalline Sliver is now 3/4
Muscle Sliver is now 2/3
Heart Sliver is now 2/3 These were all done one by one.
Metallic Sliver is now 2/3
Gemhide Sliver is now 2/3
Plated Sliver is now 2/3
It is now the Combat Phase, Beginning Of Combat Step
Player taps Crystalline Sliver
Player taps Muscle Sliver
<yasuragi> there is a lot easier way to do that
yasuragi's life total is now 13 (-5)
<Player> oh?
<Player> still learning MWS
<Player> highlight them all by dragging ouse?
<Player> mouse
<yasuragi> select all your slivers, then hold ALT for toughness/CTRL for power
<Player> ok, thanks!
<yasuragi> and use the + and - keys to increase/decrease the stats
<Player> nice
..........................
Player taps Metallic Sliver
Player taps Muscle Sliver
Player taps Clot Sliver
Player taps Hunter Sliver
Player untaps Muscle Sliver
Player taps Heart Sliver
It is now the Combat Phase, Beginning Of Combat Step
<yasuragi> creatures that are attacking should be tapped int this step:
It is now the Combat Phase, Declare Attackers Step
<yasuragi> then they will appear red
<Player> oh ok
<yasuragi> to indicate attacking
<Player> thanks for the tip
<yasuragi> np
<yasuragi> just like I can doubleclick on creatures in this step:
It is now the Combat Phase, Declare Blockers Step
<Player> sweet
<yasuragi> and they appear yellow for blocking
<Player> this program is sweet
<yasuragi> good link for you:
<yasuragi> http://www.mwsgames.com/index.php/Strovil%27s_Standard_Play_Guide_for_MWSPlay
<Player> k, thanks!
.......................... Probably the bet part of the conversation:
<yasuragi> tapping lands in the upkeep?
<Player> so I can't tap them?
<Player> or what do you mean?
<yasuragi> no I'm asking are you before I proceed
<yasuragi> you can if you want
<Player> oh right, I have to do lands now if I want to
<Player> um, no, go ahead
It is now the Beginning Phase, Draw Step
yasuragi draws a card
It is now the Precombat Main Phase
yasuragi plays Reflecting Pool from Hand
yasuragi taps Forest
yasuragi taps Island
yasuragi taps Plains
<Player> I was thinking I could respond to it at instant speed
<yasuragi> respond to...?
<Player> like on creatures
<Player> you tapping a land
<Player> like, I could tap it first at instant speed
<Player> but you're right
<yasuragi> tapping is part of the cost
<Player> nvm
<yasuragi> once I tap a creature for an effect
<Player> oh
<yasuragi> you can't tap it in response
<Player> wtf
<Player> my friends are all liars
<Player> I ****in hate 'em
<yasuragi> so you know what the stack is?
<yasuragi> do*
<Player> yes, didn't know what you just said though
<Player> if it's part of a cost, you can't respond?
<yasuragi> ok, the best way to think of it is this
<yasuragi> correct
<yasuragi> once a player announces a spell or ability
<yasuragi> no other spells or abilities may be played until all choices have been made, targets declared, and mana costs have been payed
<Player> hmm
<Player> I Didn't know that
<yasuragi> I can get you a link to it, just a sec
<yasuragi> thatway you can show your friends
<Player> I could probably just google it
<Player> yeah
<yasuragi> http://mtgsalvation.com/632-cranial-insertion-those-crazy-teenagers.html
<Player> so the only thing I could do with that effect is: tap your creatures so you can't attack, or tap your lands in your upkeep so you can't use them
<yasuragi> it's at the bottom of the page
<Player> thanks
<yasuragi> correct
<yasuragi> but you have to tap the creatures BEFORE the declare attackers step
<Player> ok
<Player> so now...
<yasuragi> upkeep, draw step, main phasem or beginning of combat step are your options there
<yasuragi> and as for tapping lands...
<yasuragi> your opponent can respond by tapping the land for mana with your ability still on the stack
<Player> right
<yasuragi> but they will have to use the mana THAT phase
<Player> then he has to use it or take mana burn
<yasuragi> correct
<Player> I see
<Player> and for creatures again
<yasuragi> it's wonderful to find someone new to the game who is actually willing to listen
<Player> if I go to tap say an avy of woe, opponent could respond by tapping it to fry something
<yasuragi> yes
<Player> so you'd want to wait until he tried to use it, then tap as a response
<Player> ok, I get it
<yasuragi> nope
<Player> oh
<yasuragi> tapping the Avatar of Woe is part of the COST
<Player> oh right
<Player> ****
<Player> ok, I think I got this
<Player> thanks!
<yasuragi> you can't stop a tap ability by tapping it in response
<Player> what about those popular "tap an untapped blah you control"
<yasuragi> what's the question regarding that?
<Player> same thing because it's part of the cost, right?
<yasuragi> as in Birchlore Rangers?
<Player> yeah
<yasuragi> correct
<Player> k
<Player> on with the game!
<yasuragi> ok
yasuragi taps Gemhide Sliver
yasuragi taps Muscle Sliver
<Player> I'm going to kick all my friends in the sack
<yasuragi> they might not know any better either
<Player> a couple of them should, they go to DCI tournies
<yasuragi> I've been playing for 4 years, and I'm still learning
<Player> yeah, it's a complex game, that's for sure
<yasuragi> what kind of tournaments?
<Player> mostly sealed I Think
<yasuragi> local?
<Player> oh yeah, in ottawa
<yasuragi> ehhh...in local play, there isn't a whole lot of rules enforcement most of the time
<Player> oh
<yasuragi> and there is almost never a judge on hand
<Player> heh
<Player> nice
<yasuragi> so if no one knows what the correct ruling is, people just play however they feel like
<Player> yeah, I guess that's what we've been doing ;p
<Player> sucks when I come here to try to play with people who actually know the rules though
<yasuragi> do you ever vist magicthegathering.com?
<yasuragi> visit*
<Player> though I must say you've been very patient/helpful
<Player> no
<Player> I go to essentialmagic sometimes
<yasuragi> not a problem, and you should
<Player> just to get deck ideas
<yasuragi> there are some excellent articles for learning the intricacies of the game
<Player> I think I might then
<Player> I'll bookmark it and check it later
<yasuragi> http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/columnarchive&column=MagicAcademy
<yasuragi> those will probably be the most helpful
<Player> thx again
..........................
<Player> thought sidewinder/plated are good too
<yasuragi> Sidewinder is amazing
<Player> yeah
<yasuragi> Flanking is cumulative
<Player> wait
<Player> I have a question
<Player> since you know a lot anyway
<Player> do the -1/-1's go on before damage is dealt?
<Player> so you could kill a 1/1 without dying?
<Player> something tells me no
<Player> that would be too godly
<yasuragi> ...well, let me clarify
<yasuragi> you aren't putting -1/-1 on the creature, it gets -1/-1
<yasuragi> as soon as blockers are declared
<Player> ok, but as soon as somethign has 0 toughness, it dies, right?
<Player> yes
<yasuragi> all creatures that are blocking a creature with flanking lose 1 power and 1 toughness
<yasuragi> so yes, a 1/1 bloking a flanking creature will die before ever dealing damage
<Player> wow...
<Player> that's ridiculous
<Player> for a 1 drop
<Player> it's like a 2/2
<yasuragi> but a 2/2 won't
<yasuragi> die
<Player> right
<yasuragi> the best part?
<Player> wait, wouldn't it because of the damage on top of the -1/-1?
<yasuragi> yes, but not just because it blocked
<Player> right
<Player> gotcha
<yasuragi> sorry that wasn't clearly worded
<yasuragi> two Sidewinder Slivers in play=
<yasuragi> all blocking creatures get -2/-2
<Player> yeah, that's what I was just thinking
<Player> I put 4 in my deck because I knew it stacked
<Player> but I thought the blocker still did damage
<Player> that's insane
<yasuragi> I know quite a few people who were upset that slivers got flanking so cheaply
<Player> yeah, understandable now that I know how it works
It is such a great feeling to find someone who is willing to learn (especially a "Player"). I feel like I won a victory over some malevolent n00b spirit today! And YAY for this person who is on his way to crushing his friend with tech plays!
In this game I am the player "Can." I highlighted the parts I found to be funny in red. All in all, though, I would have to say that I run into about 50% idiots and 50% good players.

<System> Player Lost
Taking a Legacy deck into a room labeled "Type 2" (and I mean Type 2, not Standard, only Type 2 as a label) and playing out your opening hand: Swamp, Dark Ritual, Duress, Hymn to Tourach.
Generally the exchange goes as such:
<Them> Ummm......
<You> what?
<Them> That isn't Type 2 lol
<You> i thought t2 = legacy?
<Them> lol not quite
They think you're a total n00b, which is awesome. Sometimes they'll disconnect, sometimes they'll play it out. You also have the option of hustling them, by switching to an awesome Standard deck and then just wrecking them.
Although, for reference, from now on I'm using the hedgehog in my garden as a reason why I can't continue to play Magic.
I have to agree with dbw that this is uncalled for (although he was quite harsh about it). Dealing with real n00bs is enough of a headache as it is without people randomly causing chaos.
