what would you say is assault loam's most important early turn? for instance, UWR doesn't usually care about turn 1 and usually plays a tapped land. do we have the same luxury of going t1: raging ravine pass? or is a turn 1 discard spell almost necessary for us to get going?
thinking along the lines of black combo decks, they will often sit on a duress or something until they are ready to go off, then lead with the duress to pluck counter magic or whatnot. do we take the same approach here?
say your hand looks like: land, land, seismic, discard, loam. that's pretty ideal to start winning. so do we wait to reach 4 mana so we can play discard, then drop seismic? isn't it rather risky to play the discard spell then seismic a turn later? this deck feels much like combo to me, and really we only have 3 copies of the card we need most. so wouldn't it make sense to protect it as much as possible? especially when abrupt decay looks to be gaining more steam?
yeah that makes sense. I suppose for 4 mana I'd rather be Loaming/Smallpoxing or whatnot. It didn't occur to me til now that his 3 loyalty is actually a huge liability.
for the decks that play 1 Bloodghast, how often is it actually used effectively? The thing is just so easy to block, but I'm interested in finding another wincon as right now I only have 5 I think.
Why don't we give Garruk Relentless a fair shot? It performs similarly to Lili in that it can remove a creature and produce an advantageous game state if left unchecked. I think this guy is really underrated. He also does a pretty decent Bitterblossom impression by producing tokens each turn, and if he does manage to flip and remain alive the payoff would be worth the risk.
Also, Garruk Primal Hunter could be awesome in the creature heavy builds. Again, NicFit player suggestions.
In the creatureless version (well, aside from E Witness), what do you think of x1 Haunted Fengraf? It seems like a pretty intricate yet reliable way to recycle Witness netting whatever you need. It does appear slow though. (I'm thinking of Volrath's Stronghold from legacy NicFit and how we can create similar effects).
OK folks, this is my first iteration of Assault Loam. I opted for 4 Bolts because creatures are the worst. I might take that number down (meta is about half combo half creature decks) to fit more disruption (playing with less than 4 IoK feels blasphemous). I'm not sure about the manabase, and I do have the ability to splash blue for Desperate Ravings and Gifts Ungiven. Also might need to find room for Pyroclasm.
Does this look like a good balance between Disruption/Removal/Threat? It almost feels like something is missing...?
Anyways, that was my tournament. Sorry for not being more active here recently. Life has gotten rather hectic and getting to a computer to respond doesn't come up too often.
Sweet report, can we see what your list looks like? Have you found the countermagic in Blue more effective than the disruption in Black?
Why play Blue if you don't want to Gifts? It seems so awesome on paper.
edit: Boom/Bust with Darksteel Citadel, wtf! I am so excited about this. Should I be? Colorless lands are kinda bleh. Maybe up the Urborg count?
That's where I recognize your name from I haven't played legacy in a long while, Pox being my favorite deck just didn't really have a competitive chance against t1/t2 combo decks that the legacy meta is littered with.
I don't think the card disadvantage of Spirit Guide is really worth blowing up 1 of your opponents lands, especially considering modern is the format of many lands. Granted, the disadvantage is kind of mitigated by Pyromancer. This is one of those god-hand scenarios that generally flags very soft combos as unplayable.
However, Ghost Quarter/Loam tricks are worth playing as half the field barely uses basics (and certainly rings of BG pox)
Crack the Earth looks really fun, especially in lists that run Pyromancer. Then again, turn 3 is generally as quickly as that can be played. Shouldn't it instead be used to drop Seismic?
New to this deck/thread btw, pleased to be here!
