I am always up in the better half of the participants but am struggling to reach to number 1. I feel there are just too many bad or hard matchups for Jund where we just have too many dead cards. We are the king of removal, but against all those Scapehisft, Tron or Control decks it feels at least a third of our deck is just dead. Sometimes more, sometimes less. So its definitely hard to pilot the deck and adjusting it to the meta when half of the meta just dodges most of our goodstuff cards.
Completetly agree with this statement and I have the exact same feeling from Championnat of France's Modern PPTQ and my 2 last PPTQ.
With less deck based on creatures, we are less efficient. To have a perfect tournament you should face Vizir Company, Affinity, Elves or other decks like those, but if you play against UW then Valakut or Tron, you already know that you won't finish on the top places ...
I see a lot of The Rock / Junk listes playing 1 or 2 slots of the human shaman and she makes great CA.
I understand that her CCM3 might be dangerous with Dark Confidant regarding or other slots (LotV, Maelstrom Pulse and K. command), but bring back a discard card against combo, a creature against Midrange / control, a removal against creatures deck, etc. seems attractive.
Damnation was a good card against decks with fatties (Eldra Tron, Grixis DS) or swarms (Allies Company).
I didn't play against Elves or Merfolck but those 2 decks were present during Day 2 too so having at least 2 sweepers seemed to be right.
And 2 Damnation + 1 Shatterstorm definitively make Affinity an easier match up post-board because you can deal with Etched Champion.
- Grixis Death Shadow
- Eldra Tron
- Valakut
- Affinity
- Burn
- UW Control
- Mono-W Hatebears
- UR Storm
And because decks based on grave yard always avoid grave hate and arewell positionned in the high tables, I was expecting some Dredge and Living End too.
My main target was to make Day 2 in a hard meta game for Jund. If would do Day 2, I wanted to have a better record than last year at GP Lille (I finished at 9-6), to have a Pro Point.
I arrived from Paris to Birmingham in the evening, tested a little bit with my team mates before going to restaurant and go back to the hotel for more tests and some rest.
Here started the GP :
Round 1 :
Bye
1-0-0
Round 2 :
vs Grixis Control
I thought he was playing Grixis Death Shadow because he played all his shockland untapped and was at 11 life quickly in the game. I didn't see any threats and when I didn't have any more removal to deal with his 3rd Tasigur, I lost.
The second one was more intense and longer but I did less CA than him and cannot finish him. 0-2
1-1-0
Round 3 :
vs UW Taking Turns
The 1st one was a butchery, I know the deck and how to play against and the key is to kill their cards giving some draws like Howling Mine or Dictate of Kruphix.
At the 2nd one, he put a Leyline of Sanctity on the board whereas my hand was 1 Collective Brutality, 1 Inquisition of Kozilek, 1 Thoughtseize, 1 Liliana of the Veil, 2 lands and 1 Dark Confidant. However, I've started to put some pression on him thanks to Lili and Bob who gave me more threats.
Huntmaster of the Fells was a house thanks he was flipping when my opponent started to take extra turn or doing nothing, waiting for my turn to play Gigadrowse, making a board full of tokens. I let him at one and finally found a Maelstrom Pulse to destroy Leyline of Sanctity, wanted to attack with Ravine, he played Cryptic Command to bounce it, I finished him with the drain life mode of Collective Brutality. 2-0
2-1-0
Round 4 :
vs UR Storm
The 1st game my opponent mull to 5 when I was on the play with 2 discards, he conceded pretty quickly.
Post-board, with my 9 discards and removals, it was really hard for him to put some pressure on me whereas my Goyf beat him to death. 2-0
3-1-0
Round 5 :
vs Grixis Death Shadow
The 1st game I was far behind during all the game and never find an ooporunity to change the situation.
The 2nd one was more interesting, I had a 5/6 Tarmogoyf cursed by +1 of Liliana, the Last Hope whereas she was at 4 counters and my opponent was at 4 life with only 3 lands on the board. My opponent at 1 life won't be able to fetch any more and if I found my Fulminator Mage to start to destroy its lands, it would be game. Unfortunatly, he found his only Godless Shrine he played tapped then 2 Lingering Souls to protect his Liliana until her ultimate. 0-2
3-2-0
Round 6 :
vs Jund Death Shadow
I won the 1st pretty quickly because my opponent was searching for disruption and did a lot of damage to himself with 3 consecutive Street Wraith, I finished him with Kolaghan's Command and Lightning Bolt when he played a Thoughtseize on me.
Game 2 was different, he had Lingering Souls and 2 Death Shadow and I didn't find any of my 2 Damnation.
The last one was really frustating, I keep a hand with : 2 lands, Dark confidant, 1 Fulminator Mage, 1 Fatal Push and 1 Inquisition of Kozilek. I start with discard and take of his only removal to play Bob the following turn, which I did, trigger of Dark Confidant, an other Dark Confidant and a Terminate, no land, he find a top decked Fulminator Mage and play it, I've got 2 Dark Confidant trigger's and a draw to find some land, no lands in three more cards ... He played Kolaghan's Command to take back his Fulminator Mage and kill a Bob, I finally founnd a land but he would destroy it with Fulminator Mage and kill Dark Confidant with a Fatal Push. The game was lost. 1-2
3-3-0
Round 7 :
vs Ad Nauseam
The 1st game was impossible to him thanks to turn 1 discard, turn 2 Tarmogoyf, turn 3 Liliana, turn 4 double discard.
The 2nd one he played a Leyline of Sanctity but I have Maelstrom Pulse in hand and don't really care, I started to play Raging ravine then land to play Dark Confidant. Turn 3, my opponent stayed block with only 2 lands but had 2 Pentad Prism with Sunburst 2 on it, I played my Maelstrom Pulse on it to avoid a turn 4 kill and didn't pay attention for Leyline, just played threats to put some pressure on him and finish him with Ravine.
He told me he had Ad Nauseam and Angel Grace in hand when I destroyed its Prism. 2-0
4-3-0
Round 8 :
vs Affinity
I lost the game 1 by a turn 3 kill when I was on the draw (classic Affinity).
Game 2 a Dark Confidant helped me to find my Shatterstorm to eradicate its board with 2 Etched Champion and Signal Pest on it. Then I played Olivia to close the game.
Game 3 I kept a mull6 hand only because I have Shatterstrom which I played on turn 6 (didn't find my 4th land) when I was at 5 life. Never cracked a fetch and played around Glavanic blast. 2-1
5-3-0
Round 9 :
vs Coco Allies
When I played Inquisition of Kozilek on him on turn 1 and saw Aether Vial, Expedition Envoy, Bushwacker and 4 lands, I thought it was a kind of Zoo aggro deck but didn't think it could be a deck with so many triggers (more like Human tribal). Kabira Evangel was a nightmare because he gave protection against the color of your choice when you play an ally, but with Aether Vial and Collected Company, it tricks all time long and in combat phase, your defensive creatures are useless because all its allies go though them.
For game 2, Damnation helped me to deal with an important board but a Collective Company found a Magus of the Moon. Thanks God, I had a Lightning Bolt in hand to deal with it or the game would be lost.
The last game, we played until the additional turns but a Kalitas combined with removals gave me the ultimate win of the day. 2-1
6-3-0
Day 2 !
My first wish was realized.
Now, I wanted to make a good Day 2 with regular and expected decks and no more weird decks like Taking Turns, Allies Company, etc.
Round 10 :
vs Eldra Tron
I've won the 1st one after having stabilized the board and finished him with a 6/7 Tarmogoyf and Raging Ravine.
Game 2, he played Calice at 2 on his turn 3 and I didn't find Abrutp Decay or Kolaghan's Command so I was blocked, playing some Liliana to earn time but didn't help me.
Game 3, I put a lot of pressure on him, destroying his hand thanks to discard (took his 2 Karn), my 6/7 Tarmogoyf was a good blocker for his Smasher so he didn't played it and he didn't have Tron online. I attack with my 2nd goyf to try to close the game as fast as possible, knowing he has All is Dust in hand and Smasher. I'm at 4 life, he is at 10, next turn is lethal thanks my 2 goyf, Raving and Liliana at 3, he just need his last Tron land to play All is Dust and Smasher in the same turn, even an Expedition Map wouldn't help him because he didn't have enough mana. Draw. Missing land, casted All is Dust, played Smasher and finish me ... 1-2
6-4-0
Round 11 :
vs BW tokens
Almost an unwinnable match-up for us between Intangible Vertue, Gideon and all the different kind of tokens.
Lost the 2 game in 15 minutes. 0-2
6-5-0
Round 12 :
vs UB Faeries
Game 1 my opponent mull 5 and conceded quickly after discard on his only removal and 2 Tarmogoyfs played turn 2 and 3.
Game 2 he had a slow hand and no threats whereas I played Tarmogoyf, Huntmaster of the Fells and Liliana.
I think he wasn'nt in the game because he made some missplays and was upset against his deck. 2-0
7-5-0
Round 13 :
Grixis Death Shadow
He won the 1st one with a pretty fast hand whereas mine was only removals, lands and 1 Ooze I wanted to play after a discard to be sure he would stay alive, but it wasn't enough.
Game 2 he had only 2 Death Shadow in hand when I start to play Liliana and Tarmogoyf, he had to loose some life to play them but I've got Maelstrom Pulse in hand and finish him.
The last one was a grindfest, using all our resources to deal with the board of the other one, playing Liliana of the Veil both side and trying to find some answers. He finished at 4 life and me at 7 but he finally found a Gurmag Angler then a Snapcaster on Kolaghan's Command to close the game. 1-2
7-6-0
Round 14 :
vs UB Faeries
This game was a joke, I didn't find a threat during all the game, just drew land and receiving 11 hits from a lonely Spellstutter Sprite which finished me with Mutavault and Creeping Tarpit.
The 2nd one, I was outclassed by all his drawing spells, Tasigur' abilities and fliers, I felt really weak against the deck whereas I just crunched the same one 1 hour before. Weird sensation ... 0-2
7-7-0
Round 15 :
vs Valakut
I won the 1st one thanks to Lightning Bolt into top deck Lighning Bolt.
The 2nd one was a classic kill turn 5.
The last one, I played a discard and see Baloth, I played a turn 3 Liliana and didn't activate her +1 then he hard casted Baloth. I'm pretty sure he top deck the 2nd one and want me to make him discard, but unfortunatly for him I've got Pulse in hand and a Tarmogoyf on the board. I played the +1 ability of Liliana, he discarded / played free Baloth, I kill both thanks to Maelstrom Pulse and start the beat down with Tarmogoyf and find a second one.
He is at 10 life, I've got 2 Tarmogoyf on the board, he had no card in hand, fell pretty confortable. First draw, Titan, kill the 1st Tarmogoyf, 2nd draw Titan, kill the 2nd Tarmogoyf, attack with the 1st one and finish me. 1-2
7-8-0
This Day 2 was a real nightmare, I've met some weird decks like BW Tokens and UB Faeries which I wasn't expecting in at this state of the tournament. I finished 455 / 1739.
Whereas I was pretty happy of my deck after the Day 1, I felt abandon by it during all the Day 2. Nothing happened correctly.
That's happen, but it's hard ... especialy when you know that your deck is not really positioned in the actual meta game and that you will need to drive it perfectly for good results with a little bit of success or luck.
Anyway, if I should play my Jund for an other wilde open event such as GP, I would change 2 card in my SB to improve my match-up against U decks, without changing everything.
Here what I would play :
Twilight Mire was more often a bad card in my opening (because I play 4 Ravine) than a good one, I think I will take it off.
The 3rd Nihil Spellbomb was for a meta game full of grave strategy's deck, 2 is a better option for a open environment.
Olivia was ok but too slow in my opinion and she juste finished the job when I was ahead.
In :
The 9th fetchland (Bloodstained Mire) to filter my deck and to trigger Revolt for Fatal Push to deals with card like TKS or Restoration Angel.
The 3rd Fulminator mage is important even if it's not a game break card, we play an attrition war and this card, which can deal damage, block creatures and destroy land, is the perfect example of the essence of Jund.
Painful Truth is really good when you are in a bad situation and when you need to find some answers, I used to play it and didn't take it for Birmingham, I think it was a huge mistake.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my report.
Next tournaments will be two PPTQ in Modern in September and be sure of one thing ... I will play Jund
Thanks for your attention.
Even if the actual meta game is pretty hard for Jund, I hope to make Day 2 and go as far as possible (I just have 1 Bye).
I'll write my report newt Monday, when I'll be back in France.
Do you guys play Anger of the Gods still in the SB? Against the top decks according to goldfish, Anger doesn't seem that amazing. Almost makes me wanna change that to a second Damnation.
You need Anger against Dredge and decks with a lot of small creatures like Affinity, Counters Company, Elves, Merfolck or decks playing Lingering Souls.
I've always played 2 Maelstrom Pulse (one in the MD and the other in the SB) and never wanted to have less than 2 in my 75.
Right now, here is my side board (preparing GP Birmingham in 3 weeks) :
Jund and Abzan are personal favorites of mine, and I share that feeling with many, many Modern players. No matter how powerful the other decks get, there will always be a group of die-hards that will carry the torch for Tarmogoyf and Liliana of the Veil.
I actually believe that this is a very good time to be playing G/B/x. Fatal Push is an awesome addition to the color combination, Lingering Souls is one of the best ways to beat Grixis Shadow, and the non-white versions have strong appeal in other matchups.
There's not one particular version of G/B/x that's very popular right now. Instead, it's mostly about personal taste. But at your next Modern tournament, you shouldn't be surprised to run into Classic Abzan, Jund, Jund Death's Shadow, Abzan Traverse, Abzan Knight of the Reliquary, or straight G/B Midrange.
With the rise of Grixis DS and UW control (about 19-20% of the paper met agame for both), what do you think about Choke or Boil in our 75 ?
Boil is easier to cast and can slow down for a while if not managed.
On the other hand, Boil can be played in Instant and is more effective when resolved.
I've just finished my weekly testing session against team mates and I wanted to play against Living End this morning with the list I want to bring to GP Birmingham (August) :
I won 3-2 before side boarding thanks to the 3 Scavenging Ooze and the 2 Kalitas.
Discard is pretty efficient against their cascade spells and Liliana of the Veil to discard your own Tarmogoyf when you know they will soon cast a cascade spell are the most efficient ways to deal with Living End before SB.
In : +3 Nihil Spellbomb / +3 Collective Brutality / +2 Fulminator Mage / +1 Maelstrom Pulse / +1 Damnation Out : -3 Lightning Bolt / -3 Fatal Push / -2 Abrupt Decay / -1 Kolaghan's Command / -1 Liliana of the Veil
I won 9-2 with the previous SB tech.
With 9 discards, 3 GY hate + Ooze and Kalitas, it's really hard for them to win a game or you keep a terrible hand against LE.
Don't hesitate to mull until you find a GY hate and/or discard spells.
In fact, I take out 3 Lightning Bolt, 3 Fatal Push and 2 Abrupt Decay against Living End, all those cards are useless.
That's why I prefer bring in Collective Brutality, even if it's not the dream but Collective Brutality + Nihil Spellbomb + Damnation + LtLH seem to be the cards I would like to play (with the 2nd Maelstrom Pulse).
I think that 3 Collective Brutality, 3 Nihil Spellbomb, 1 Liliana the Last Hope and 1 Damnation is pretty efficient against Living End (with 2 Kalitas in MD).
Why would you play CB or Liliana the Last Hope against Living End? CB doesn't kill anything and doesn't guarantee you to discard their cascade spells and their cyclers make discard way worse. Liliana the Last Hope does also not do anything except maybe fuel our own GY for Living End (and only putting 2 cards into the yard, I think hitting a creature there is not very likely). I guess she can recur one threat after Living End resolved, but I am not sure this is enough value for 3 mana here.
LtLH is a threat which is not deal by Living End, she can bring back a boosted Tarmogoyf to block the opposite creatures or a Scavengin Ooze to wash the graveyard of the opponent.
She is not the best card in the match-up but she's playable (depending of what you take out).
Collective Brutality is an other discard spell to deal with Violent Outburst or Demonic Dread in their opening hand or turn 1 / turn 2 hand.
Ok their cyclers permit to rebuild a hand quickly but to find one of your 7 cascade cards in the rest of your pack is not necessary an easy thing and this time you've earned may be the difference between defeat or victory.
Spsiegel1987, here you have some answers to your questions :
Gus, I noticed you're playing 4 Ravine instead of 3---I feel like Jund was doing quite well before the norm became 3---how did it feel playing the 4th?
I've always played 4 Raging Ravine since it's our best finisher. I can't count the number of games won thanks to our creature land but I would say at least 40-50%. That's why I've never been a huge fan of Blood Moon Jund in which we lost our best kill.
I think the 3 and 3 split on push and bolt seem fair, I don't think cutting decay below 2 is right, there's no many decks out there that play problematic permanents.
I've started playing 4 Lightning Bolt / 2 Push / 3 Terminate but with the increase of Grixis Death Shadow and Eldra Tron, I needed Fatal Push so I went to 12 creatures, 3 Lightning Bolt / 4 Fatal Push / 3 Terminate but in this version, I've felt I had too many removals so I cut the 4th Push to go back to 13 creatures.
The split 3 Lightning Bolt / 3 Fatal Push / 3 Terminate is right now my favorite one because we have all the possibilities to manage what we want (creatures, Planeswalkers, player life).
How was liliana, the last hope? Why not grim lavamancer?
In my opinion, Grim Lavamancer is not really synergic with Scavenging Ooze and Tarmogoyf.
Yes, you choose what you exile from your graveyard but when you really need to use him, you will have to exile some cards you'ld prefer in your graveyard.
On the other hand, Liliana the Last Hope is more difficult to manage since she's a Planeswalker and people don't bring a lot of things against Planeswalkers (sometimes Pithing Needle or a random Dreadbore in recent Grixis Death Shadow's list but no more). Against Control for example, she is pretty powerful.
Moreover, she can be used like a Corpse Churn to bring back creatures in match-up in which they are not exile but just kill by regular removals and/or damage creatures, which is pretty important when you play "only" 13 creatures.
The last point, the sniper mode is a necessary evil in our 75 since we don't really manage very well swarm deck (that's why I've got 2 sweepers too). But this ability is pretty good too against big creatures : a 3/4 Gurmag Angler or Reality Smasher is less impressive against our 4/5 Tarmogoyf.
Why 2 Fulminators instead of 3?
I really love Fulminator Mage, it's one of my favorite card and I've won so many game thanks to him.
But in the actual metagame, I find him less necessary.
Take the actual T1 decks :
- Grixis Death Shadow : they play all their spells for one mana (Serum Vision, Thoughtscour, Fatal Push, Delve creatures, Thoughtseize, IoK, etc.) so destroy one of their land on turn 3 will slow them a little bit but no more
- Eldrazi Tron : whereas against Gx Tron Fulminator Mage shine, against Eldrazi Tron he's less effective.
"Destroy a land Tron ? Not a problem I'll play my Eldrazi Tremple and cast my Thought Knot Seer.
Destroy my Eldrazi Temple to slow me down ? Not a problem, Mind Stone + regular land continue to accelerate me."
- Affinity : you need Fulminator Mage to deal with man land so 2 seems OK, you don't want to many Fulminator Mage against Affinity.
- Burn : cut one of their color is OK but you specifically bring Fulminator Mage because you take out 6 or 7 cards against Burn (Dark Confidant and Thoughtseize) whereas you don't play 6 or 7 life gain / discard in your SB.
- UR Storm : Fulminator Mage is not really great against 2 colors deck
- Vizir Company : same observation than over
- Dredge : they don't need mana to bring back their creatures so Fulminator Mage is not so great.
Why 2x Kalitas, is your meta creature/GY heavy?
I found Kalitas is a really powerful card underestimated because he doesn't have an ETB effect like some others of our 4 drop (Huntmaster of the Fells, Pia & Kiran Nalaar).
He can manage decks based on graveyard strategies or recursive strategies (Grixis Death Shadow, Dredge, Living End, Vizir Company), he can produce extra creatures against decks based on creatures synergy (Vizir Company, Hatebears, Living End, Dredge) and stop abilites of specific creatures (Arcbound Ravager).
And cherry on the top of the cake, he provides some life gain which is always welcome in our deck in which we use our life as a resource (fetch / shocklands, Thoughtseize, Dark Confidant trigger).
Do you feel those 3 spellbombs are way better than cages/voids? Is 3 enough?
Unfortunately, Grafdigger's Cage doesn't work against Living End but is pretty efficient against Dredge. Nihil Spellbomb is effective against both decks and can provide CA. One other important thing : it growths our Tarmogoyfs when used.
Leyline of the void is OK but because I keep Dark Confidant in grave yard strategy match-up, it's too dangerous to reveal it on a Dark Confident trigger. And a hard cast Leyline of the void doesn't exile the previous card which were in the graveyard whereas a Nihil Spellbomb played and cracked solves the problem.
I think that 3 Collective Brutality, 3 Nihil Spellbomb, 1 Liliana the Last Hope and 1 Damnation is pretty efficient against Living End (with 2 Kalitas in MD).
Were you leaving in LOTV against White death taxes? You didn't feel they have too many creatures to cut her completely?
Against D&T, I play like a control deck and kill every creatures played.
I take out all the discard spells and 1 Liliana of the Veil to bring Anger of the Gods, Damnation, 3 Collective Brutality (a Disfigure which can take a Path to Exile or drain 2 life in extra mode),1 Maelstrom Pulse and 1 Liliana the Last Hope.
It works pretty well against D&T and Vizir Company too (Collective Brutality is huge in this match up : kill a turn 2 Devoted Druid and discard a Collected Company feels so good).
But one important thing to remember with Jund is that we all have our way to play the deck.
Some Jund mages prefer to be aggressive and put pressure whereas others prefer to play more like control players (even if you can put some pressures when necessary).
I'm in the second category, and the cards played in my 75 are for this kind of style. But if you want to play Hazoret MD and Thundermaw Hellkite in your sideboard, it can works too.
Just depending how you play your deck
Hi guys, I went to a Win-a-Box tournament in a store in which a lot of good French Magic players used to play (Rémi Le François, who made top8 at GP Copenhaguen; Théau Mery, who was in final at GP Las Vegas, sometimes Rémi Fortier or Pierre Dagen).
I wanted to test Stillmoon Cavalier against Grixis Death Shadow since less and less people play Lightning Bolt and because Shintaro Kurata made top16 at GP Kobe with two exemplars in his side board for mirror match.
Round 1 :
vs Jeskai Control
At the 1°), I let him at 3 life but was never able to finish him.
The 2°), I kept a two lands hand with discard and Dark Confidant but I didn't find my third land before turn 4 ...
0-2
0-1-0
Round 2 :
vs BW devotion
A special deck I've never met before, he played cards like Vampire Nighthawk, Athreos, God of Passage and Phyrexian Obliterator.
A deck of creatures with some removals, an easy prey for Jund, I won the 1°) pretty easily.
The 2°), Stillmoon Cavalier was the hero of my game, he deals 4 damages each turn whereas I managed all the threats my opponent played.
The last time I've played against this player, I've lost, that's why I brought Shatterstorm in my 75.
He played Leyline of Sanctity main deck and put it on the battle field at the 1st one whereas my hand was Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Liliana of the Veil, 2 lands, 1 Dark Confidant and 1 Scavenging Ooze.
At the second one, I managed two Ensnaring Bridge thanks to Ancient Grudge and Abrupt Decay, for the victory.
The 3°), he had Leyline of Sanctity, Codex Shredder *3, Lantern of Insight pretty quickly, he just needed Ensnaring Bridge to lock me, but he never found it and my 7/8 Tarmogoyf put a lot of pressure on him to the victory.
2-1
3-1-0
Round 5 :
vs Living End
He mulligan 5 but despise it, he cycled 3 creatures and played Violent Outburst for the win.
At the 2°) he flooded a lot whereas I beaten him with Tarmogoyf and Dark Confidant.
The last one, I killed my own Tarmogoyf and Scavenging Ooze in response of his Violent Outburst to bring them back in the same time than his creatures.
Then arrived Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet which returned the entire game.
2-1
4-1-0
Quarter final :
vs Vizir Compagny
An easy match-up for Jund, you just have to discard / kill the key creatures and put some pressure thanks to Tarmogoyf and/or Ooze.
I won both games in 15 minutes.
2-0
Semi-final :
vs Burn
The 1°) I've lost turn 4 without doing anything than discard Skullcrack and play Scavenging Ooze, in vain.
The 2°), despite of playing Kalitas and Scavenging Ooze, I've lost to Deflecting Palm and burn spells, he didn't play creatures to feed my Ooze.
0-2
Pretty happy of my record.
If I should go to an other tournament or GP (thinking about Birmingham in August), I would replace Stillmoon Cavalier by a third copie of Collective Brutality to improve Burn, Grixis Death Shadow and UR Storm match-up, and Grafdigger's Cage by a third copies of Nihil Spellbomb (Grafdigger's Cage is not really necessairy against Vizir Company whereas Nihil Spellbomb improve Living End match-up).
Here what will be my list for next weeks :
Completetly agree with this statement and I have the exact same feeling from Championnat of France's Modern PPTQ and my 2 last PPTQ.
With less deck based on creatures, we are less efficient. To have a perfect tournament you should face Vizir Company, Affinity, Elves or other decks like those, but if you play against UW then Valakut or Tron, you already know that you won't finish on the top places ...
Gus
Gus
I see a lot of The Rock / Junk listes playing 1 or 2 slots of the human shaman and she makes great CA.
I understand that her CCM3 might be dangerous with Dark Confidant regarding or other slots (LotV, Maelstrom Pulse and K. command), but bring back a discard card against combo, a creature against Midrange / control, a removal against creatures deck, etc. seems attractive.
What are your thoughts about it ?
Gus
I didn't play against Elves or Merfolck but those 2 decks were present during Day 2 too so having at least 2 sweepers seemed to be right.
And 2 Damnation + 1 Shatterstorm definitively make Affinity an easier match up post-board because you can deal with Etched Champion.
Gus
I'm back from GP Birmingham with Jund and, as promised, is here my report.
So I took the following Jund for GP Birmingham :
2 Swamp
1 Forest
4 Blackcleave Cliffs
1 Blood Crypt
3 Bloodstained Mire
2 Overgrown Tomb
4 Raging Ravine
1 Stomping Ground
1 Twilight Mire
4 Verdant Catacombs
1 Wooded Foothills
Creatures
4 Dark Confidant
3 Scavenging Ooze
4 Tarmogoyf
1 Huntmaster of the Fells
1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
4 Liliana of the Veil
Instants
3 Fatal Push
3 Lightning Bolt
2 Abrupt Decay
3 Terminate
1 Kolaghan's Command
Sorceries
3 Inquisition of Kozilek
3 Thoughtseize
1 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Fulminator Mage
1 Olivia Voldaren
1 Liliana, the Last Hope
3 Nihil Spellbomb
1 Ancient Grudge
3 Collective Brutality
1 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Damnation
1 Shatterstorm
I was expecting this kind of meta game :
2 Swamp
1 Forest
4 Blackcleave Cliffs
1 Blood Crypt
4 Bloodstained Mire
2 Overgrown Tomb
4 Raging Ravine
1 Stomping Ground
4 Verdant Catacombs
1 Wooded Foothills
Creatures
4 Dark Confidant
3 Scavenging Ooze
4 Tarmogoyf
1 Huntmaster of the Fells
1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
4 Liliana of the Veil
Instants
3 Fatal Push
3 Lightning Bolt
2 Abrupt Decay
3 Terminate
1 Kolaghan's Command
Sorceries
3 Inquisition of Kozilek
3 Thoughtseize
1 Maelstrom Pulse
3 Fulminator Mage
1 Liliana, the Last Hope
2 Nihil Spellbomb
1 Ancient Grudge
3 Collective Brutality
1 Painful Truths
1 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Damnation
1 Shatterstorm

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my report.
Next tournaments will be two PPTQ in Modern in September and be sure of one thing ... I will play Jund
Thanks for your attention.
Gus
I'm leaving Paris this afternoon to go to Birmingham for the GP in Modern with my Jund list.
I expect the following meta :
- Grixis DS
- Eldra Tron
- UW Controle
- Affinity
- Valakut
- Burn
- Mono-W Hatebears
- UR Storm
- Junk
I know I'll meet some GY strategies in high tables (players who didn't face GY hate in the previous games) like Dredge and Living End.
Here is the list I've been tested for the last weeks with my team mate :
2 Swamp
1 Forest
4 Blackcleave Cliffs
1 Blood Crypt
3 Bloodstained Mire
2 Overgrown Tomb
4 Raging Ravine
1 Stomping Ground
1 Twilight Mire
4 Verdant Catacombs
1 Wooded Foothills
Creatures
4 Dark Confidant
3 Scavenging Ooze
4 Tarmogoyf
1 Huntmaster of the Fells
1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
4 Liliana of the Veil
Instants
3 Fatal Push
3 Lightning Bolt
2 Abrupt Decay
3 Terminate
1 Kolaghan's Command
Sorceries
3 Inquisition of Kozilek
3 Thoughtseize
1 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Fulminator Mage
1 Olivia Voldaren
1 Liliana, the Last Hope
3 Nihil Spellbomb
1 Ancient Grudge
3 Collective Brutality
1 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Damnation
1 Shatterstorm
Even if the actual meta game is pretty hard for Jund, I hope to make Day 2 and go as far as possible (I just have 1 Bye).
I'll write my report newt Monday, when I'll be back in France.
See you guys !
Gus
You need Anger against Dredge and decks with a lot of small creatures like Affinity, Counters Company, Elves, Merfolck or decks playing Lingering Souls.
I've always played 2 Maelstrom Pulse (one in the MD and the other in the SB) and never wanted to have less than 2 in my 75.
Right now, here is my side board (preparing GP Birmingham in 3 weeks) :
1 Liliana, the Last Hope
3 Nihil Spellbomb
1 Ancient Grudge
3 Collective Brutality
1 Anger of the Gods
1 Maelstrom Pulse
1 Damnation
1 Shatterstorm
Gus
You can also play Street Wraith
Gus

Personnaly I'm pretty happy about Jund, it's less played and need some real good knowledges about the meta game to perform well with it.
Gus
Boil is easier to cast and can slow down for a while if not managed.
On the other hand, Boil can be played in Instant and is more effective when resolved.
What are your thoughts about those cards ?
Gus
2 Swamp
1 Forest
4 Blackcleave Cliffs
1 Blood Crypt
3 Bloodstained Mire
2 Overgrown Tomb
4 Raging Ravine
1 Stomping Ground
1 Twilight Mire
4 Verdant Catacombs
1 Wooded Foothills
Creatures
4 Dark Confidant
3 Scavenging Ooze
4 Tarmogoyf
2 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
4 Liliana of the Veil
Instants
3 Fatal Push
3 Lightning Bolt
2 Abrupt Decay
3 Terminate
1 Kolaghan's Command
Sorceries
3 Inquisition of Kozilek
3 Thoughtseize
1 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Fulminator Mage
1 Kitchen Finks
1 Liliana, the Last Hope
3 Nihil Spellbomb
1 Ancient Grudge
3 Collective Brutality
1 Anger of the Gods
1 Maelstrom Pulse
1 Damnation
1 Shatterstorm
I won 3-2 before side boarding thanks to the 3 Scavenging Ooze and the 2 Kalitas.
Discard is pretty efficient against their cascade spells and Liliana of the Veil to discard your own Tarmogoyf when you know they will soon cast a cascade spell are the most efficient ways to deal with Living End before SB.
In : +3 Nihil Spellbomb / +3 Collective Brutality / +2 Fulminator Mage / +1 Maelstrom Pulse / +1 Damnation
Out : -3 Lightning Bolt / -3 Fatal Push / -2 Abrupt Decay / -1 Kolaghan's Command / -1 Liliana of the Veil
I won 9-2 with the previous SB tech.
With 9 discards, 3 GY hate + Ooze and Kalitas, it's really hard for them to win a game or you keep a terrible hand against LE.
Don't hesitate to mull until you find a GY hate and/or discard spells.
Gus
That's why I prefer bring in Collective Brutality, even if it's not the dream but Collective Brutality + Nihil Spellbomb + Damnation + LtLH seem to be the cards I would like to play (with the 2nd Maelstrom Pulse).
Gus
Last argument : Reid Duke brings CB post-side against Living End too : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKaex6V6xw4
Gus
I've always played 4 Raging Ravine since it's our best finisher. I can't count the number of games won thanks to our creature land but I would say at least 40-50%. That's why I've never been a huge fan of Blood Moon Jund in which we lost our best kill.
Gus
I took the following list :
2 Swamp
1 Forest
4 Blackcleave Cliffs
1 Blood Crypt
3 Bloodstained Mire
2 Overgrown Tomb
4 Raging Ravine
1 Stomping Ground
1 Twilight Mire
4 Verdant Catacombs
1 Wooded Foothills
Creatures
4 Dark Confidant
3 Scavenging Ooze
4 Tarmogoyf
2 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
4 Liliana of the Veil
Instants
3 Fatal Push
3 Lightning Bolt
2 Abrupt Decay
3 Terminate
1 Kolaghan's Command
Sorceries
3 Inquisition of Kozilek
3 Thoughtseize
1 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Fulminator Mage
1 Kitchen Finks
1 Stillmoon Cavalier
1 Liliana, the Last Hope
1 Grafdigger's Cage
2 Nihil Spellbomb
1 Ancient Grudge
2 Collective Brutality
1 Anger of the Gods
1 Maelstrom Pulse
1 Damnation
1 Shatterstorm
1-1-0
Round 3 :
vs GW Hatebears
The Craig Wescoe's list, he was pretty confident thanks to Mirran Crusader but Lightning Bolt and Liliana of the Veil managed them.
Like said before, creatures's decks are good prey for Jund.
2-1-0
Round 4 :
vs Lantern Control
2 Swamp
1 Forest
4 Blackcleave Cliffs
1 Blood Crypt
3 Bloodstained Mire
2 Overgrown Tomb
4 Raging Ravine
1 Stomping Ground
1 Twilight Mire
4 Verdant Catacombs
1 Wooded Foothills
Creatures
4 Dark Confidant
3 Scavenging Ooze
4 Tarmogoyf
2 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
4 Liliana of the Veil
Instants
3 Fatal Push
3 Lightning Bolt
2 Abrupt Decay
3 Terminate
1 Kolaghan's Command
Sorceries
3 Inquisition of Kozilek
3 Thoughtseize
1 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Fulminator Mage
1 Kitchen Finks
1 Liliana, the Last Hope
3 Nihil Spellbomb
1 Ancient Grudge
3 Collective Brutality
1 Anger of the Gods
1 Maelstrom Pulse
1 Damnation
1 Shatterstorm
And keep faith in our deck : Jund is still a thing.
Jund'em out !
Gus
