@silverironman Depends on your mana base. Some of us love the Basic Island, some of us hate it. I love the Basic Island because when I get 3 to 4 mana open I want my opponent to have to consider as many options as possible, Clique, Queller, Company, and Izzet (Sideboard games). The Island allows me to keep my mana smooth at the expense of very mediocre utility land.
I have been reading this topic for a long time, learning a lot from the various members. Given the current debate I thought I would chime in with my experience. I was spurned into action by @RPD stating he wanted to create discussion, which I think is crucial. I have always tracked by Knightfall results on MTGO, which allows me to tell you guys I have played 192 matches with a 51% win rate and won an SCG IQ IRL. First my list. Second, some of the lessons I have learned:
1. Playing with a Basic Island and a Vendillion Clique is crucial to beat some of the worst match ups. In my mind Scapeshift variants and Thing in the Ice variants have been the hardest to beat. Most desks with V Clique are blue based tempo control decks, which allow opposing decks to funnel removal spells to their limited number of creatures. But with Knightfall the amount of creatures helps Clique stay alive and add to your clock. In addition the line of Draw, Play a Land, and Say Go allows us to hold up 3 different options, Clique, Queller, and Company. During its heyday in Standard, Bant Company was best when it played as much flash as possible.
2. I agree with the posts above that moving Voice out of the main deck in favor for Tarmogoyf is necessary. First off it is easier on your mana. Second it overloads path to exile which is crucial in some match ups. Third, having an efficient beater, even if it is only a 3/4, is awesome.
Obviously, some of these points have been said before and are not revolutionary to the archetype. Some of the questions/concerns I have moving forward.
A. How do you guys beat Scapeshift/Thing in the Ice decks? I leave in the combo because they are more powerful in the grind aspect of the match. Through the Breach, Primeval Titan, and Valakut are such beatings for me. I have begun to theorize that Stain the Mind could be a great addition instead of the sideboard Worships, which are horrible in these two match ups.
B. Selfless Spirit is a card which I needed to play with a lot before I realized how powerful it is. My concern moving forward is the amount of -X/-X cards like Yahenni's Expertise that could be entering Modern. Just food for thought moving forward. I look forward to posting a lot more in the future as well.
