The deadline for April Top 4 is tonight and we're still currently missing Ink-Treader's and scrad_the_wanderer's entries. If necessary, I'll leave the round open beyond the deadline to wait for the two missing entries, as I can't really have a Top 4 round with only two players. Still, allow me to take this opportunity to remind everyone that if you're involved in a contest and you know you can't meet the deadline, let the host know asap via pm. We all know real life happens and rightly takes precedence, but there is still some form of obligation from entering a contest.
On the subject of hosting May, I really hope it will not be necessary for me to host again for the third time, but of course if there's no alternative I prefer that to the contest dying.

In these cases I always interpret the numbers as places, so when I calculate the scores I'd give you 3 points in that case. I take this opportunity to remind everyone to be as clearest as you can in your top 3s, that's the reason I always write "1st place" and so on rather than "1, 2, 3" as a player.

@bravelion....For the round 3 challenge, when you say to change no more than one of those sentences, do you mean that nothing else can change? Basically, does the card need to be the same mana cost, P/T, etc as the original card?
You give me the chance to make an additional ruling I had forgotten. Only the rules text, the rarity, and the card types and supertypes (this is the new part) need to be the same except for the one sentence you must change in the rules text. All the rest can change, namely: the card name (obviously, as you're making a different card), mana cost (including both cmc and color), subtypes, P/T (if it's a creature), starting loyalty (if it's a planeswalker), flavor text. If your card is a planeswalker, the only loyalty cost that is allowed to change is the one of the ability with the changed sentence.

Wow Bravelion, running 2 contests is tough, kudos for taking it up, and thanks!
I wouldn't have wanted it and it was not foreseen on my part, but after all there is an advantage for being unemployed again... you have all the free time you need and more, so time isn't a concern. If the alternative was no contest at all, I just saw no other choice.

Well, today is the 2nd and nothing has changed. I guess I might figure out a last minute plan and run both contests... I'll see if I can come up with something.
EDIT: Ok, I just went ahead and did it. Here is round 1. I've already set a precedent last August by running two consecutive months of MCC, I may as well set a precedent for hosting the MCC and the CCL in the same month. Good I have a lot of free time in this period... (and obviously I enjoy it and I'm willing to do it, otherwise I wouldn't certainly do it.)

Better bring this up: Anyone willing to host next month's CCL?
Anyone?
I won't have time in March.
I have a plan for the MCC that only makes sense in March and I wouldn't want to host both contests, but if the alternative is there being no CCL next month I think I could find a way. Please just consider this as a last resort though.

Overall - You’ve mentioned that you are not a Johnny, and it shows. I can see the struggle you have in coming up with a synergy to win against an over-powered opponent. But I feel that being a good designer means that sometimes you can’t design just for your strength, and need to challenge yourself. It took me all of four seconds to come up with three modern-legal two card combos that would defeat Gleemax, and I thought a three card “I win the game” combo is something that should not be hard to come up with. You’ve made some bad design choices for the sole reason of getting the cards to combo together, where you should have tried to see the interactions that come more naturally, and build up on those.
This is one of the most spot-on critiques I ever got. What you say is 100% correct, this was a very difficult challenge to me, definitely the most difficult this month. Many thanks for this critique and the awesome story you created this month! Also, congratulations to Ink-Treader for the win!

For the record, "iconic creature" and "creature with an iconic creature type" are synonymous (while "iconic creature" and "cool creature" are not), at least to me, so I automatically interpreted the challenge in the right way. Doombringer may have instinctually assumed everyone knew that (I probably would have too as host) without any rational thought that someone might not know. I'm not putting the blame on him in any way, just thinking about what could have happened. Well, at least everyone learned something out of this: those who didn't know about what the word "iconic" means in Magic design learned that, and those who already knew learned to not give anything for granted.

In Magic design, it's well established that each color has two race creature types that define the essence of that color, one of which is called "iconic" and it's usually at rare/mythic with big creatures, the other is called "characteristic" and it's usually at common/uncommon with small creatures. The only exception is black that has two characteristic races.
List of iconic races
White: Angel
Blue: Sphinx
Black: Demon
Red: Dragon
Green: Hydra
List of characteristic races:
White: the only one that is not 100% established, most (myself included) consider this to be Human
Blue: Merfolk
Black: Vampire, Zombie
Red: Goblin
Green: Elf
All of this is very well established in Magic design, Maro talked about this multiple times, and the word "iconic" used in a Magic design context only has the above meaning instead of its ordinary English one. What some of you probably think of as "iconic" is actually "splashy", and I think the confusion comes from here, but those are completely different words in Magic design, with clearly different meaning. Iconic and characteristic races do NOT change and they're not supposed to. They are NOT in flux. The green iconic has changed in the past because what they were trying didn't work out (Wurm, Treefolk), but now they say Hydras are working and they're keeping that. Maybe one day they'll define explicitly what is supposed to be the white characteristic race, but that's the only change you might expect to all of the above. I'll edit this post asap with link to official sources about all of this, so that you don't have to believe me.
EDIT - from Maro's blog this this this about some of them not always showing up (Sphinxes not being in Tarkir doesn't change the fact that Sphinx is the blue iconic race) this about Hydras (also see comments) this this this and this about white's characteristic race this, this, this and this about not confusing the two terms "iconic" and "characteristic" this this in response to someone potentially having the same confusion that showed up here
Also, the following from the Blogatog FAQ:
Why is green’s iconic hydras? Why not ________ (green creature type you like)?
We tried numerous creatures as green iconic over the years (treefolk, wurms, various types of beast, etc.) but none of them were anywhere as popular as hydras have become.
Aren’t hydras red?
Richard Garfield put the first one in red because it was connected to stone. Those in the next few years followed Garfield’s lead. While looking for green’s iconic nothing worked in green so we started looking for things we could move. Hydras are beasts which constantly grow - that felt pretty green. We moved them over and it worked, so we’re sticking with it.
There's even more if you look for it, but I hope this is enough.

I personally took it as "design a creature that has one of the iconic creature types" (aka Angel, Sphinx, Demon, Dragon, Hydra). The word "iconic" has a very specific meaning in Magic design, even though I can see where the confusion comes from.

• "The Lion's Lair", my article series about MTG and custom card design in particular. Latest article here. Here is the article index.Rather outdated by now, and based on the old MCC rubric, but I'm leaving this here for anybody that might be interested anyway.
• My only public attempt at being a writer: the story of my Leonin custom planeswalker Jeff Lionheart. (I have a very big one that I'm working on right now but that's private for now, and I don't know if I will ever actually publish it, and I also have ideas for multiple future ones, including one where I'm going to reprise Jeff.)
I'm thinking of having the theme be "Fixing common mistakes", things like using Planar Chaos as a color pie example or making an overstuffed rare etc.
I'd totally support that theme. It sounds both fun and informative, and it's not easy to find a theme that is both at the same time!

I was away for a long time, but what happened to the system implemented back then, by teams with players getting a normalized score in function of the number of judges? It seemed to work quite well, so I'm wondering why it is not used anymore..
I advise you to read the last few pages of this very thread, were I (and a couple others) brought up the issues with the team system, which didn't work well at all, at least lately (but maybe ever).
The problem with the list is that, each round, you are competing against someone in 5 out of 6 critiques, another player in 4 out 6, etc...
This should NOT happen with the list system in theory as long as it's well used and there are at least seven players competing. The list should be remade each round including only people who posted that round, so that each person is critiqued by six ACTIVE players. There might be the problem of people not posting critiques, but that is a problem in whichever system you use. In the list system, a normalization is used to take care of such situations if they arise.
This means that those two guys are competing for the same points, while the remaining N-2 players get critiques from other sets. I realize it happens to everyone, but you're not leveling the field this way because worse cards can still get better scores than you, just because you didn't face them directly. With teams that happens as well, of course, but you are not in the same race, so it's fine.
I'm not sure I understand this fully, but as Asrama already said, there is no perfect system. Each system has its pro and cons. Nobody ever said the list system is perfect, I know I said it's the best we have as of now, much better than teams. In the end, what makes the list better than the teams (IMO of course) is that the former takes care of people dropping much better than the latter, and at least since I'm an active poster here (about a year and a half) there is always a lot of people dropping. I can't see any other real issue with the list again outside of people not posting critiques, but that would be a problem for teams too, and a worse one for teams as I don't know of any normalization method that was applied with teams.
I get that the lack of players might be an issue for the team structure, but I really think the list option has many flaws.
I honestly can't see them. I see a lot of flaws with teams instead.

I wouldn't have wanted it and it was not foreseen on my part, but after all there is an advantage for being unemployed again... you have all the free time you need and more, so time isn't a concern. If the alternative was no contest at all, I just saw no other choice.

I have a plan for the MCC that only makes sense in March and I wouldn't want to host both contests, but if the alternative is there being no CCL next month I think I could find a way. Please just consider this as a last resort though.

I'll edit this post asap with link to official sources about all of this, so that you don't have to believe me.

this about some of them not always showing up (Sphinxes not being in Tarkir doesn't change the fact that Sphinx is the blue iconic race)

There's even more if you look for it, but I hope this is enough.

I'd totally support that theme. It sounds both fun and informative, and it's not easy to find a theme that is both at the same time!

I advise you to read the last few pages of this very thread, were I (and a couple others) brought up the issues with the team system, which didn't work well at all, at least lately (but maybe ever).
I honestly can't see them. I see a lot of flaws with teams instead.
