It helps to reduce removal if you want synergy to be a thing.
Pretty much in every instance in cube land, you reduce raw power level to make synergy relevant. Otherwise everybody would play 5 color control.
Zombies, for instance, have a spell that returns all zombies in the yard to hand in common. Cabal something or other. There's also Daru Stinger, which now also counts humans, and so on.
For more 'synergies'
- Zombie, Goblin, Elf and Soldier tribal (probably others) are all possible at pauper.
- The artifact deck is possible thanks to Antiquities, 2 mirrodin blocks and esper.
- Storm (or "UR Spells" -- grapeshot, empty the warrens, temporal whatsit that bounces stuff, etc)
Beast - Probably too weak, but it is a 5/7 vigilance when monstrous.
Starfish - I like it. Improves draws. Blocks stuff. Just like all good blue dudes.
Stayr Hopline - Only in tribal.
Ajani's Presence - Seems pretty good. Strive is basically the same as replicate but for instants.
Also for not-pauper the new enchantress is awesome.
You could also play a lot of the self-mill dudes like that zombie in the new set and self-mill spells like mulch.
I'm rather partial to Infernal Caretaker, and there's plenty of common zombies, many of which are pretty decent in Pauper land. Returning five dudes to your hand is pretty slamtastic.
Well really because there's so many quality commons nowadays most cubes wouldn't really change that much if we got rid of everything since 8th edition. We'd only really lose the black sweepers, some (but not that many) removal and a few quality dudes that most people don't even really play. Gone are the days that there was only one common black 2/2 or 2/1 for B.
I have been looking through gatherer for cards that interact with lands, I've found a couple of really nice ones. Now I'm just going to cut the reprints and the worse versions really similar ones, I think I might be able to make it into a 160-180 card cube.
Edit: the thing that shocked me was that abundance of cards in Blue.
I'd lighten up on the landwalk especially if you don't have that much removal. It's sucky to play green and your opponents first three dudes all have forestwalk.
So if I have a tribal cube, are slivers worth putting in? After M14 especially the Naya colors have a lot of common slivers. I usually reduce the number of removals, so more slivers could be on the field at once. Still worth it to include creatures that aren't good by themselves like Talon Sliver?

Or on the mothership.

It's not very good.
Yes. The sacrifice a dude part doesn't target.
