Here's my attempt at making a minimal white splash stompy. Also wondering if Razorverge Thicket can replace the last two fetches of ten since Zendikar fetches are $$$. Also based on cards I already own.
You can use 2 Flooded strand as fetch 9-10, as they can also find temple gardens. Just remember how many temple gardens are left in your deck, so that you don't run out of temple gardens to fetch with the strands.
Hello new stompy player here. I'm looking for a little help. The build I am running has done me pretty good so far against UB fairies, Mardu Pyro, Bant Spirits, Mill, Rw Burn, Dredge, and Infect is always a crazy race. Struggling against Merfolk, Mono white eldrazi and taxes, Jeskai control, and get blown out by Abzan Cord turn 4 or 5. Any help is greatly appreciated.
1 Hashep Oasis
2 Treetop Village
18 Forest
2 Scavenging Ooze
4 Avatar of the Resolute
3 Kalonian Tusker
4 Strangleroot Geist
4 Dryad Militant
2 Leatherback Baloth
4 Experiment One
4 Steel Leaf Champion
3 Rancor
2 Vines of Vastwood
2 Dismember
2 Blossoming Defense
3 Aspect of Hydra
SB: 1 Scavenging Ooze
SB: 2 Pithing Needle
SB: 2 Natural State
SB: 2 Back to Nature
SB: 2 Feed the Clan
SB: 1 Dismember
SB: 2 Creeping Corrosion
SB: 3 Firespout
Merfolk - is one of the harder matches although not unwinnable. It's annoying because a single spreading seas can cause a fatal slowdown in our aggro plan. If you have two mana, them casting seas on one forest makes geist, avatar, and some other GG creatures uncastable.. also if you have 3 forest and one has a seas on it.. baloth and champion become uncastable. Just bring in all the targetted removal you have against them, kill lords and master of waves.. and hope for the best. Use 4 Blossoming Defense instead of a 2/2 split with Vines, so that seas won't slow down your pump.. as vines need GG to do damage. I know this match up very well, because two of my playtest partners are merfolk players.
Jeskai Control - bring in Thrun, the last troll. It's not a guaranteed win, but he will help you a lot.
Plenty of strong W sideboard cards. Path, RiP, and Stony. Nice tech with the 3 Firespout, the green side is also useful for killing flyers like spirits. He has a good sideboard.
His plan game 1 seems to be all-in aggro. Then game 2, the deck can interact more with the opponent using sideboard cards.
Just want to say good work MagicYio on taking care of the primer. I'm glad the basic list has 12 one drops, it allows the deck some really aggressive starts.
Just testing for fun a single Molten-tail masticore in the main as a finisher. Requires to have one extra card in hand when cast, so that he does not automatically die next turn. Usually, I'm able to do one 4 direct damage shot with him before he get removed. He's 4 cmc, so only for 22 land versions.
Stubborn Denial - can often counter the boardwipe that would crush you (Terminus!), or key combo bits on combo decks.
It's also surprsingly easy to turn on ferocious with our deck full of high power creatures. 3 denial in the main is what I suggest for those who want to explore the blue splash.
Hmm, there was a fun but not overly consistent deck floating for a while that had a LOT in common with Stompy (E1, Geist, scooze, avatar) was based on these last two, also ran Young Wolf. The dream start was a t1 Cloudfin and then a t2 young wolf then pongify on the wolf, leaving you 3 bodies and 8 power, including 3 flying swinging on t2. Now that we have Pelt Collector I wonder if that deck’s consistency makes it worth re-evaluating.
Saw that deck too. It can have some explosive starting hands.
What are you splashing U for in your build?
Could you post your main aswell?
I splash U for Stubborn Denial. Please do note my list is very much tailored to my local FNM.
Thrashing Brontodon - I use this smaller guy instead of Baloth or Champion. It's because the Burn deck I often play against brings in Ensnaring Bridge game 2, and also the Bant good stuffs deck that often shows up there brings in Worship game 2. Two Brontodon and 3 Stubborn denial, gives me 5 main deck outs against those cards.
Greenwheel Liberator - yeah, he can just be bolted.. but it does not happen all the time. And when he sticks, he turns on ferocious for denial
Currently have no Dismember in main or side, because Dismember is pretty bad against Bridgevine and Burn, and those two are the decks you would often encounter around here. Also have no manlands because I want Dungrove Elder to be at full power.
Hooting Mandrills - this guy is too slow, even with 9 fetch lands in the deck
Delver of Secrets - not enough instant and sorcery to consistently flip him
Hidden Herbalists - I tried several times before giving up. It requires magical chrismas land hands for him to be good here.
Thanks. I used to have a creeping corrosion there, but removed it because traditional affinity is almost extinct over here.
There are still a few Scaled affinity players... spellskite and trygon help keep their ravager under control.. as long as skite and trygon don't die to walking ballista activations.
My sideboard not really good for mtgo. It's just fine-tuned for our small FNM's.
Burn and Bridgevine are the two decks you would encounter here so... 2 Relic, Ooze, Ratchet Bomb, and Echoing truth go in against Bridgevine. // 2 Spellskite, Witchbane, and Pulse go in for Burn.
Definitely bring in at least two Spellskite, some Bogles players don't even have path to exile in their main deck because they fit in white leylines. Their creatures are naked as long as the spellskite stands alive. And if they do have pte, we can sometimes use vines to protect the skite. It would also have some limited use against Hardened Scales affinity.
If Bogles is really a problem. Back to Nature handles them just fine. Although it is narrow, and should only be added to the sideboard when there are many Bogles players in your area. You can also test if your manabase can handle the cmc of Fracturing Gust - the Bogles players in my area fear this card.
Probably a biased opinion because I'm a BGx player. I look for sources of card draw right away.
Have ordered a reaper from SCG for testing. It sees itself when it dies, so you draw a card if the reaper get's killed in combat.
I see the troll growing to at least 6/6 if things go right. Worth testing as a one or two of in lists with black splash. People won't really side grave hate against us, so a top decked troll has a lot of food in the yard.
For the fun part: I have proxied and played almost any other deck and somehow I cannot enjoy any of them as much as I do stompy. Small zoo and gobots are close in terms of fun but their inconsistency and so low resiliency takes the fun part from them after some games. However, I'm a big fan of +1/+1 counters, I've tried to build mono green Hardened Scales decks but they were also not resilient enough, Hardened Scales that is not on a stick is not good for a stompyish style deck. So, I've been trying to build something with Winding Constrictor. The creature base is so similar to stompy, I've tried Bloodhall Ooze for a while and even though it's great when it works, it's so much inconsistent. So, lately I've been having so much fun with this build
The Charnel Troll looks interesting. At 3 cmc, it can be assumed that at least one or two creatures already died when the troll is cast.. and it would probably have dealt some damage or killed by the opponent before you run out of things to exile from the yard. Well, and if the troll is found to be bad in testings... another card to consider might be Midnight Reaper.
You can use 2 Flooded strand as fetch 9-10, as they can also find temple gardens. Just remember how many temple gardens are left in your deck, so that you don't run out of temple gardens to fetch with the strands.
