I have to poke the bear:
How many Ping effects does the average cube run? Because dies to ping/removal is like saying people lose to death.
Staple being top 20% is a good parameter. But the more sets we've seen the less hard & fast cards we have because of theming, design specifications, and efficency has effectively been named (Mulldrifter, Doom Blade, Blastoderm, etc).
Control cards being Staple seems narrowminded. Some people do not see control beyond a higher costed Midrange deck. I know it is impossible, but when I wrote my articles it was to apply logic to the Aggro, Tempo, Midrange and Control structures. Ramp is Midrange and requires a cube to accomodate it as it is not a naturally occuring thing. And combo cannot exist without all else failing.
Hey team. I would like to mention Modal Creatures (+++), flexibility in Black to be your primary/complementary Aggro. The way red was a few years back. 1B 2/X's are lifeblood of that argument as a complimentary color. Evasion is also a large defining part.
My cube has its quirks. But I try to support aggressive bodies in all colors based on: Single-Color mana, Power >/= cost, and evasion.
For that I argue for Thrill Kill as Staple, but also keeping Interloper and Horror too. True "balls out"/"don't look back" aggressive decks need things that can get in 2+ times over the next consecutive turns to enable Bloodlust, Ninjitsu, or other tricks.
Black being control is, imo, as outdated as Blue being Control First then any other. Control in draft for new players is a trap and veterans abuse that.
Hey. Been a while. The forums till lag like a mo'fo on my phone.
I would suggest: Classification- (Archetype) for Archetype cards. Also I tried at reboot before, good luck on getting help. This is a rather small community that infrequently chimes sans spoiler season
Decent enough rant. If I may, I would like to add my $0.02:
-Aggro is a pillar of draft. However, it is powered by consistency, which in turn means saturated options.
-Aggro is a Glass Cannon that can be hosed from existence by Punters and an overload of cheap, efficient, removal.
-Midrange is happenstance and a backup to every draft. It needs no help.
**I wrote an article referencing that. (#1 in my sig)
-I like your desire to explore, interact, and otherwise enjoy the wacky cards for the player's sake. But, I hear your comments and see a sophomore view of a cube. "Damn the numbers", "that isn't fun..", etc.
The longevity of the conservative view is depressing. However, in order to simulate a legitimate draft experience, less wiggle room is available.
So the veteran curmudgeons bicker about steadfast, polorizing, views but that is from top many sets of MtG and too many tried and true games.
**Always have your cube for fun. But know the Cube Elders don't stop being cranky .
Um... Caught in the Btights has probably my favorite art of all Pacifisms. It is a Gremlin-Aardvark getting hit by a MtG equivalent of a Tractor Trailor..... ballin' !!!
I know I am in the minority, but I like Cruel Finality. It is not a Cantrip, but it is an instant. Dead Weight is more efficient, but I like this as getting close to Annihilate.
Dawnfeather Eagle is Cubeable because it tacks on Vigilance, basically giving you a nigh-repriseless attack. Being a 3/3 Flyer is definitely a good leave behind body. Yes, there is tough competition for a slot most run 0-2 of in 5cc White, but it can compete with only 1 other decent body.
On Revolt, you have an odd view, imo. You think a 2/2 giving a token, off curve is decent. While a 2/2 Cantrip Reach, likely on curve is not decent. It may be a color pie thing, if so, I rescind my note.
I would say this is mostly accurate. Depressing as that may be, but I am buying into Energy this time around.
Rukh can be Control as no one wants to kill it. Sparksmith getting to deal 2-3 damage keeps swarm and aggro in check. I keep Sparksmith based of the memories of how good it was in Onslaught
But that slows the timing of the Crown Hunter as you need to kill off, or leave mana open, the other threats.
I understand Red is one of the better conttolling colors. However, when the source of Monarch is a wall for 4R...
I simply like Entourage, probably for the same reasons you find Crown Hunter appealing, they fit our personal play style.
Golgari/X is my favorite archetype. And having 2 of the better Monarchs makes it even stronger. Entourage is good no matter the timing, and Green has more of a chance to drop it early, with pressure, than most
I would argue Entourage as a Staple.
-Replaces itself, and possibly/likely will get more cards
-Its able to block 2 creatures, meaning less vulnerability to aggro/swarm. I know no Reach.
-Splashable
-Acceptable boxy that has no restrictions.
That aside. Most removal is not P9 material. Cost efficient and game changing was most of how the real P9 worked. That said, it is hard to find the equivalent to 5 pieces of Moxen in pauper.
And yes the Seller vs Outcast is a clear cut "one is better", but it is interesting to me that a simple +1/-1 can have such a big difference in playability.
