I also had Mana Vault, Sol Ring, Lotus Petal, and Nihil Spellbomb in play. I cranked the Smokestack up to 5 soot counters, and my board stayed exactly the same through every Smoke Stack trigger. It also allowed me to draw a ton of cards off the Spellbomb.
Same deck, different game:
T5: Pithing Needle naming Lethal Vapors, followed by Lethal Vapors.
Later: Trading Post + Mizzium Transreliquat + Sculpting Steel + Static Orb. For 6 mana and 1 life per round, I get to draw an extra card and make Static Orb one-sided. Super fair. I was killing people slowly with Honden of Infinite Rage and Dimir Keyrune until I overloaded Cyclonic Rift and followed it with Tezzeret the Seeker's -5. I didn't have enough artifacts to kill every opponent, but I cleared away two of them. Postcombat I cast Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas and won the following turn.
The lesson here is, of course, NEVER ACCEPT THE TEMPTING OFFER. LIKE EVER.
Generally good advice. Although since you get to see the first land fetched before making your decision to take the temptation or not, sometimes I'll see someone fetch something like Nykthos or Cradle and say, "Sure, I'll tutor up Strip Mine!"
One time, playing my Wort deck (with nearly every Fork effect available), I cast Tempt with Discovery 4 times (using Regrowth-type effects on it) and Forked it twice over the course of 6 turns, Conspiring most of the Tempts and Forks. All three of my opponents took the first two temptations, before two of my opponents realized it was a bad idea to let me ramp so much. One of my opponents refused to take the hint and took every single temptation I offered him, despite only fetching 5 nonbasics from the whole pile of TwDs.
The Ayli player played some exiling board wipe that escapes me, so I sacrificed all the creatures I owned to Ayli for a metric butt-ton of life and allowed the rest to be exiled. At EOT I cracked Cephalid Coliseum to draw 6/discard 3, then used Sensei's Top to stack Strip Mine/Crucible/Island on top of my deck.
My turn, I re-cast my general, sitting on something in the neighborhood of 15 mana, equip with Lightning Greaves, and hit Ayli (16 commander damage to Ayli from Thada), stealing Hero's Blade.
Karador's turn, he taps out for Rise of the Dark Realm, but is unable to pay the tax for Rhystic. I draw 2, and I'm about to pop Relic of Progenitus (which was Karador's intent, since I'd been targeting him with the tap ability pretty much all game). Then I pause a moment, and use Sensei's Top. The third card is Commandeer, which I draw from the Top and hard-cast, instead of cracking the Relic. Karador put sadness on the stack and passed. Ayli puts out Torpor Orb and Opaline Unicorn to block Thada and passed.
My turn, I move Greaves to another creature, use Whim of Volrath to change Thada's Islandwalk to Plainswalk, re-equip Greaves, and swing at Ayli for lethal general, pointing the rest of the creatures at Karador for lethal.
All thanks to Rhystic+Archive+Top, as missing any one of those three cards could have drastically changed the game.
Last weekend I was at a table using my Riku of two ReflectionsClone tribal deck. The game became extra grindy but eventually all my opponents tried to win, but were disrupted and tapped out. I was ramping consistently so I untapped with a lot of lands but not much other permanents. There was a Nekusar, the Mindrazer player on the table with Nekusar and a Diluvian Primordial in play. I played Sneak Attack and then sneaked two clone effects into play, copying Nekusar and Diluvian Primordial, and playing the Nekusar player's Wheel of Fortune effect in the graveyard with the ETB ability. In the next 7 cards I drew I got another clone effect, and the Nekusar player discarded another wheel effect so I sneaked the clone effect copying Diluvian Primordial again, and playing the wheel effect with the ETB ability and kept doing this until everyone was dead.
The last commander game I played ended with one of the last two players hitting himself in the face. He activated his Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief for 17 and then targeted it with Rogue's Passage to attack for an unblockable 21 points of commander damage. The defending player had a Dictate of the Twin Gods in play and cast a Deflecting Palm. The attacking player wound up taking 42 points of damage from his own commander, and losing the game.
Technically, Deflecting Palm was the source of the damage. 42 damage is enough to kill anyone that hasn't been gaining life, of course, but if the Drana player had more life it wouldn't have been a kill via general damage. Replace Deflecting Palm with something like Reflect Damage, Mirrorstrike, Glarecaster, or Shining Shoal and it would have been lethal no matter what the Drana player's life total was at.
Also, it should be 84 damage. Drana is at 21 power, doubled to 42 damage by Dictate. That 42 damage is prevented by Deflecting Palm, which attempts to deal 42 to Drana's player, which is then doubled by Dictate again.
Playing Child of Alara. Early game, the most interesting thing I accomplish is Sorin, Lord of Innistrad for his emblem. The mono-white player has been beating me almost constantly, and he even exiled my T5 Child (with High Market in my hand for the following turn... ). Eventually, I make Child explode for some breathing room, and over the next four turns I play Mogis, God of Slaughter, Iroas, God of Victory, Xenagos, God of Revels, and Sliver Hivelord. The board is clear, save for the Meren deck with Meren and Hermit Druid and Avacyn with Mikaeus and Worship. Meren is at 20, Omnath is at 16, Avacyn is at 26, and I'm at 10
Topdeck: Keranos, God of Storms. All of my gods become creatures, and I target Keranos with Xeagos to give him haste. I swing at Meren and Omnath for lethal, and although Meren could block one of my attackers, he would lose both his creatures to do so, and he just takes the damage and scoops up.
Avacyn swings at me with a 7/7 Mikaeus. I hit him with Mystifying Maze. EOT, Mikaeus comes back as a 0/0 and dies. Avacyn no longer has a creature for Worship to function, and I win.
----------
Playing Melek, Izzet Paragon. I land a T4 Jace's Sanctum, and later a Leyline of Anticipation. The next turn, Marchesa (on my right) plays Consecrated Sphinx. My upkeep, I flash Past in Flames to cast Curse of the Swine from my graveyard. Marchesa sacrifices the Sphinx to Ashnod's Altar, but at least the Sphinx is gone.
Several turns later, Marchesa reanimates the Sphinx. My upkeep, with Melek in play, I cast Long-Term Plans from my hand, tutoring Chaos Warp. I cast two more instant/sorceries to scry away the two lands above Chaos Warp, and then warp away the Sphinx and Ashnod's Altar.
A few turns later, I have a fairly developed board state, as does Marchesa. Avacyn and Vorosh have impoverished boards, so Avacyn casts Akroma's Vengeance. In response, I cast Time Spiral, followed by See Beyond, followed by Long-Term Plans pulling up Foil, using my Sensei's Divining Top to reach it, and pitching an Island and Mountain to counter the sweeper.
Near the end of the game, Marchesa is my only opponent with a threatening board, but both Marchesa and Avacyn are at 2 life. An overloaded Cyclonic Rift opens the way for Melek to kill Marchesa. The top card of my deck was then Proteus Staff, and so I stormed off the following turn (creatureless deck).
Ghave is about to combo off on his next turn, as is the fourth player. Child has combat locked down with Ensnaring Bridge and only 1 card in hand.
My turn, I topdeck Karn Liberated.
-4 Tezzeret, fishing up The Chain Veil.
I belatedly realize that between the three 'walkers I have in play already, I've managed infinite Chain Veil activations
Then I look at my newest card in hand and giggle a little bit.
I cast Karn, exiling basically everything save for Ensnaring Bridge. Then I restart the game, controlling several creatures without summoning sickness and infinite Chain Veil with Garruk Wildspeaker. I hit Garruk's ultimate a few times and swing for the win at a completely pristine board.
P1T4: Academy Ruins, swing Thada at Sidisi exiling Sol Ring. Cast the exiled Sol Ring. Prowl Knowledge Exploitation casting Praetor's Grasp targeting Scion, exiling Sol Ring. Cast the exiled Sol Ring.
And that's pretty much how the game went. T5 I played another Snow-Covered Island and had 10 mana available to me. I stole Sidisi's Magus of the Coffers with Treachery and I stole his Nirkana Revenant with Vedalken Shackles to deny him the crazy mana ramp the two provided. I stole Ob Nixilis, Unshackled with Kheru Spellsnatcher, then Sidisi killed Ob and reanimated him, which I followed up by stealing him again with Volition Reins for a few turns before he got killed a second time.
Eventually Scion stopped being mana-screwed and got back into the game, but in short order I pulled up Empress Galina and Lightning Greaves, and Scion's deck was heavy with legendary permanents. (Within a small handful of turns, I had Yosei, the Morning Star, Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius, Bladewing the Risen, and Spear of Heliod.) Scion tried to get back in the game a second time with Prophet of Kruphix, and on my next turn I gave Sidisi his Nirkana Revenant back and took the Prophet instead. Then I topdecked Capsize, threw it at the Revenant, and the game was pretty much over.
Interestingly, my game immediately prior to that one pretty much ended the same way; I stole Prophet of Kruphix from a Vorosh, the Hunter deck using Bribery with a Capsize in my hand, topdecking Extraplanar Lens a couple turns later.
You realize that Sharazad is banned, right? You may have a houserule for it (especially if a regular has a hard-on for it), but it's not normally a legal card.
I have unbounded mana, and unbounded land untapping. Deck everyone out with Mikokoro, and they can't even be saved by an eldrazi unless they can pitch cards from their hand at instant speed. (And even then, I can draw answers to just about anything they use to do so, since I get to draw my deck.) Null Brooch gives me a means to pitch my Ulamog.
I love finding new combos in my Karn deck, without even changing a single piece of the decklist. I knew I had infinite mana with Ruins-Temple-Rings, but I had never realized before that I could also deck everyone out thanks to Mikokoro.
Two weeks ago at my league, one of the players borrowed my Jaya Ballard deck. He was up against a lockdown/control Oloro deck and two others. By the time I was done with my game and came over to watch the game being played with my deck, Jaya had already eliminated the other two, making it Oloro vs. Jaya, but Oloro had finally gotten out Humility+Dovescape+Night of Souls' Betrayal, so only uncounterable noncreature spells were going to do anything at all useful.
Jaya was sitting pretty with an ass-ton of lands, including Mercadian Bazaar with a bunch of storage counters, but the game had pretty much devolved to "Draw, land, pass" or "Draw, discard, pass". Occasionally Oloro would cast a Boseiju-powered instant or sorcery, but not to much effect.
Our league has timed rounds (1h 40m per round), and the timer went off. The last three extra turns were Oloro, Jaya, Oloro.
On Oloro's second-to-last turn, he sacrifices Dovescape so that he can cast more than one noncreature spell in a turn. He draws a few cards, but doesn't do much, then passes. (Oloro is at 41 life)
Jaya casts Lava Burst for X=41 with mana open.
Oloro counters with Remand
Jaya counters with Burnout
Oloro counters with Mindbreak Trap
Jaya responds with Increasing Vengeance on the Lava Burst
Oloro is out of counterspells, and the game is over
I was pretty pleased that my mono-red deck (even if it was being piloted by someone else) managed to win a counter-war with a heavy control deck, while at the same time burning an Oloro deck to the ground.
Last week I was playing my Vorel of the Hull Clade deck, which make use of several Graft creatures, including Plaxcaster Frogling
One of my opponents was Ghave, Guru of Spores. He tried to equip Ghave with Illusionist's Bracers. I looked at my Plaxcaster and my 2 open mana and said "NOPE".
For bonus points, Damia could have sacrificed his Shapeshifter, named Treefolk, and pulled up a Woodfall Primus to get rid of my Emperion, but didn't think of it.
It wouldn't have worked anyway.
Quote from Woodfall Primus »
When Woodfall Primus enters the battlefield, destroy target noncreature permanent.
Ah, good point. Well, he might have Acidic Slime in there, too. Regardless, he didn't do it.
At the table: RG Wort (me), Purphoros, Oona (well-known balls-to-the-wall combo deck), and Damia
I've got my commander, 4 goblin warriors, and a Wood Elves out, plus 7 lands (including Gaea's Cradle). Purphoros has a few interesting goblins, Oona doesn't have much in play after having a land and 3 mana rocks blown up by Purphoros (although the deck is still capable of going off from out of nowhere), and Damia has Riptide Shapeshifter.
Oona manages to play Necropotence and draws up a grip of cards to try and get back in the game. EOT, Damia sacrifices the Shapeshifter, naming Praetor and pulling out Sheoldred, reanimating the Shapeshifter on his upkeep.
My turn, I sacrifice my Wood Elves to Sheoldred, topdeck Rude Awakening, and play my 8th land. Rude Awakening (conspired) to ritual myself into a butt-ton of mana, followed by Platinum Emperion and Goblin Game (conspired). With Platinum Emperion, I simply pick 40 for the two games. Purphoros and Damia tie for the lowest number in the first game, and Oona gets the lowest in the second game. Afterwards, Oona is at 4 life (and with Necropotence, he wasn't going to be getting any new cards), and Purphoros and Damia are both below 10. For bonus points, Damia could have sacrificed his Shapeshifter, named Treefolk, and pulled up a Woodfall Primus to get rid of my Emperion, but didn't think of it.
I didn't end up winning the game (Purphoros took an extra turn with Final Fortune and then won with Kiki-Jiki/Zealous Conscripts), but the huge blowout from nowhere was a lot of fun.
Another recent game, playing Toshiro Umezawa vs. Tajic and Kaalia. At one point, I have Toshiro, Crypt Ghast, Nirkana Revenant, Nefarox, and Necropotence in play. Kaalia had been the target for most of the game, but had returned to 40 life with Resolute Archangel. I play Soul Conduit and swing at Kaalia with Nefarox. Kaalia sacrifices his single non-flying creature, but elects not to block with his flier. Before damage, I pay into Necropotence to bring myself down to 6 and swap life totals with Kaalia, eliminating him.
Tajic manages to get rid of Necropotence and swing at me for upwards of 20 damage with lifelink. On my turn, I manage to eliminate all but 2 of his creatures, swap life totals with Soul Conduit again, and swing unblocked with Nefarox. Tajic scoops.
And to think there's still people who claim Sol Ring isn't broken at all...
Exploration was just as big a factor there. If not bigger.
It was also a god hand. Besides if Damia was not his general, that hand would have left him with nothing, he would be top decking until he found a draw spell to sort of replenish his hand.
Damia is a draw spell to completely replenish his hand...
Also, I count 8 cards. In multiplayer (or 1v1 on the draw) without taking a mulligan, he'd have 1 card left over.
2 cards actually, as Damia was played from the command zone.
I was counting your hypothetical "if Damia was not his general"

Add Torpor Orb, Sphere of Resistance, and Feroz's Ban in play, and Forbid in my hand (ending every turn with a full grip), and things were pretty much inevitable. Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas was used for victory.
