Normally I use a black marker to outline cartoon style alters, but Batman: The Animated Series never outlined anything in black so I had to change my technique.
The source image is directly from the opening sequence of Batman: The Animated Series.

Yeah I hate both of those too. One time I tried to mix Bone Black with Zinc White and all of my paints turned invisible and then my brushes exploded and also I died. I'm a ghost now. RIP.
Anyway, on to my latest alter. This Solemn Simulacrum was fun to do, because I've always loved the clean lines of official Nintendo art from the old NES instruction booklets.
I think the black outlining really made it pop. The source for this image was directly from my old Mario 3 instruction manual.

I lay on thin watered down color (over a base) and feather it out with my fingers. A few layers of this and you can get nice, soft transitions.
This sounds...awesome. I'm going to try it later, thanks!
Anyway, here is my latest offering. Anyone remember SGC2C?
I never realized how hilariously bad the backgrounds were on this show until I looked up some images for reference. The sources on these images are direct screencaps from the show itself (you know...the same 5 still frames of animation they used for the entire run of the show. Haha).

The amount of people interested in Fastbond is probably miniscule (just Vintage players?), but I went ahead with this anyway. The German name was interesting to me, and I just did a light alter of replacing the white border.

I'm still chugging along...here's a DBZ Brainstorm I just finished.
Since all of my painting experience is with oils, I have never really done a lot of linework. It's still my weakest point, but I'm pleased with how this turned out. The blending on the shoulder pads is pretty neato in person, and the metallic gold power crackles add some flavor.
The artwork is based on official Bandai Namco art from the "Raging Battle" video game. It is also available in various style guides, which I referenced for this piece.

Spade, I really appreciate the encouragement. Thanks!
I tried my hand at another cartoon style alter, though I am still having problems murdering markers when using them to outline.
Any fans of Futurama?
For some reason, Bender's expression felt perfect for Duress. Sorry for the weird photo angle, for some reason the protective coating I put on shows up with a huge glare in photos. Looks fine in person though.
The art is from the Season 4 DVD case, and it can be seen as a wallpaper here.

This is my first ever altered card. I know a lot of people dislike anime lands, but I wanted to start off by trying something with clean lines. I have a ton of experience painting with oils, but acrylics are pretty new to me. It's challenging! But, I'm also having a ton of fun. I've been inspired by so many great alterers in this thread and many others, and I hope to continue to improve and be able to eventually share my art with others.
For those of you who use black markers on top of paint, how do you keep them from drying out? I think I ruined a marker today trying to outline this card, but I'm sure I've seen others use the same technique...
