The deal is that if you align your deck with a faction (Which is optional. You do so by including at least 10 cards from your faction and none from the other) and win you'll get a special preview card from the next set in the block.
Seems like a nice little gimmick. A lot of people won't sign up because they will just wait for someone else to win and see the card when they post it online.

Into the Maw of Hell is a name so awesome, it deserves its own song.
It would be about a world of brown spikes and red fire, where men fight and scream and become blurry masses. Then it would change to somber, we learn that this glorious place exists only in Raymond Swanland's head. To visit it, you must enter the maw of Hell itself.
I think the deck aligning thing was for the Game Day. I'm not positive about this, it could just be a slogan. Of course, they could be trying to get us to align our decks in Limited as well. That sounds fun, but not really winful.

They won't make something like a watermark important. There would be problems putting in on the Gatherer, problems with Magic Online, problems with draft, (what if both players next to you as well as yourself are all in Mirrodin early?) and problems with game verification. Also, in the announcement about Game Day, it said you must have none of the other faction in your deck. If that was a game rule, saying that would be unnecessary.
They didn't force people into a shard for Alara either.
this doesnt really give any more information on the subject than we already had. we already knew that they were harping the phrase "choose a side" as a sort of set slogan. all this is is that in print at the end of a youtube video, with an ad for the prerelease date right under it. it doesnt give confirmation one way or another unless im missing something
It would be nice for the prerelease to reward faction decks (or on gameday), there is too much flavor in sets like this, would be a shame for it to go to waste during play.

nobody is forcing you. they are merely rewarding you for choosing to build with a more limited card pool. which, from what i hear (i don't know first-hand because i didn't play in any Alara events) is the same thing they did for Shards of Alara's Game Day.
Faction rewards are for Game Day, not the Pre-Release or any other Limited event. If that were the case, the following would occur:
"Hey, check it out, I shucked all the Phyrexian faction cards I pulled so I'm alligned with the Mirrans! Maybe I'll win the alliance promotion card!"
"Neat. I grabbed my most advantage-generating, utility-producing, and tempo-securing spells, because that's what Limited is about. Now I'm beating you over the head with my deck. Enjoy your consolation promo."

No offense, but you heard wrong. The faction option for Scars of Mirrodin Game Day is the first pool-limiting gimmick that Wizards has introduced for Game Day events.

As far as I know, they didn't reward you for picking a shard because there is no sure-way to tell if 2 or 1 color cards are of one shard or another.

It was actually originally talked about during the alara block, a lot of the stores also got sheets with their pre-release crap saying that's how it should be done, but no one actually did it. I know all the stores i attended prereleases at said that it was a dumb idea, but that it was suggested.

We did it at my store and no one complained. The prerelease sheet was worded so that it strongly emphasized the flavor of doing such a thing. It was great. The release party was run normally, but everyone had a blast embracing their inner vorthos.
If the SOM prerelease does call for affiliated decks, you can bet we'll do it again. Seriously, try it sometime. While I wouldn't suggest it for draft, it was loads of fun in sealed.
In respect to full disclosure, I definitely had a blast as I opened Elspeth AND Rafiq AND 2 Jhessian Infiltrator AND removal. I only lost to a topdecked Cruel Ultimatum for first. :/ Still, everyone had fun.
Unless you have seperate boosters for each side, doing sides offically isn't really possible. What are judges going to check your deck to make sure you don't have any opposing faction cards in your deck, what happens if you draft cards but don't have neough of one faction?
It's just impossible to make factions matter in a tournament.

This.
We would know by now if the prerelease has special rules.

At least wait until the set is released and all the details are known.
