I found this on ebay & am curious if anyone has heard/seen anything like this before: snipped fake foil power link
There are no release dates on the cards, so they cannot be promos & they're of original art work, which WotC would not do for promos (since they love alt art for promos).
I am dumbfounded about his? How can one seemlessly foil up a card? Why are there no bids on most of the sellers posts? Yes, the seller calls them "altered art," but there still seams something wrong in the state of Denmark here?
Any feedback to me would be appreciated.
And I honestly had no idea where to put this post, so any mod can ship it to the correct place (& that point I will remove this part of the post).
Discussing illegal activities on this site is against the rules. You're being shipped to Siberia for a week.
Proxy process. you use acetone on a normal cheap foil then print on a clear card image. These are really nicely done but it's actually copyright infringement to sell these cards.
100% illegal and fake. But, homeboy has sold hundreds of these cards over the last month or so. It's getting to the point of being amazing at how much money the guy is raking in with fake cards that take nothing but a decent printer, a blanked foil, and a bit of spray finish.
definitely not "100% illegal". generally the best a company like wotc can do against something like this is chilling effects. Thats barely even gray area

It's either legal or not and these are definitely NOT. Just because Wizards doesn't go after him doesn't change that fact.
Proxied events are not illegal, proxies are not illegal. Wizards owns the trade marks on the art, card names, and mana symbols. Reproduction (espesilly for profit) of these trade marks without wizards consent is illegal and that is exactally what hes doing.
They are illegal because they are forgeries. I don't know why people have difficulty understanding this; the guy is making money by printing fake cards.
Now, doing this for home-use only? No real legal problems. But selling them? Fake cards are fake.
they are used as proxies and pretty much sold as such. Cause who really can afford real black bordered power or duals. I don't necessarily condone it or make them myself but it is legit and can be done. A little acetone and a foil and your in the proxy business. It is also easily identifiable and very hard to pass off them for real cards if you know what to look for. So its more of a meh to me as faked and proxied cards are everywhere when it comes to cards that are worth anything.

Copyright infringement. He is using WOTC copy-written images and artwork and selling it for profit without their express written consent. Definitely illegal.

It's illegal and the guy doesn't really tell clearly that they are not real beta duals.
Actually it is illegal to print cards for home use too, i don't see who told some posters in here that making proxies is legal if for personal use. Any unauthorized reproduction of WOTC's copyrighted material is illegal.
Ebay won't do anything. They only have a policy against proxies. If he is selling them as altered art (which they technically are) ebay won't do anything.

Incorrect. You are legally allowed to own one "back up" copy, so long as you own an original copy.
However, creating a playset of cards you do not own, is not legal.
The way I understand it, about a year ago a local guy was making and selling high priced and out of pring Magic cards (ie Power 9, duals, Mana Drain, Library). My local shop owner and tournament organizer contacted WOTC about this and their reaction was basically "meh". They (WOTC) didn't seem to care that people were printing, selling, and playing these cards.

I'm too tired to believe or not believe you, but I would love to see where this is posted/printed so I can show my friends. I have read that copyright laws regarding printing your own materials are generally so tough, however, that most of what we do on this forum is likely illegal (if we got a cease-and-desist; see: my sig and avatar, for example). (Also note that this stuff is rarely enforced...). I am not a lawyer blahblahblah.
That being said, there's lots of power-9 proxies around here. Some are home-made. Some painted (usually spellbooks into moxen, etc...). Others are done without proper text (just custom art relevant to the original and a "fan title" so there's no immediate copyright problems...names like "Jet", "Ruby", "Sapphire", "Lotus", etc...).
Do Wizards have any policy on scraping the top layer of cards and printing your own on the empty ones, as long as it's clear that it is a proxy? If they don't care about/don't have the right to sue you for that, you could just print old cards with new/future sight borders and/or foil.

This guy has been reported numerous times and has sold close to $1000 of these in the last 4-5 days. That doesn't even account for the last 3-4 weeks.

use your own art and design for the cards and pop'em out that way.
you're avoiding the copyright infringement (well more like making money off of someone's else's back) and you generate interest in your work.
