From the frozen vaults deep below Wizards of the Coast, Coldsnap, the legendary Lost Third Set of the Ice Age Block is coming out at last. It's not part of Ravnica Block, it's not part of the block after that. But -- get this -- it will be tournament-legal!
Intrigued? Tune back in on Wednesday, when Randy Buehler will explain all!
This gets a huge WTF from me as well as makes me ask many questions. Will it only be legacy and vintage legal? When was it developed? Why does such a set need to exist?
Maybe this will be a special chronicles edition that people have been speculating, only being 'tournament-legal' in legacy/vintage/extended, or whatever the card's printed in at the time.
It seems, though, that WOTC is content at having four sets come out in a calendar year now, with core sets every other year, Unhinged in between 8th and 9th, and now this. At least it's a change of pace and something that we can sink more money into :).
And, let me be the first to say......OH SNAP!! IT'S COLDSNAP!!

This is probably the worst signature in the history of signatures.
If this wasn't producing the same knee-jerk reaction I had when I heard them announce both Unhinged and Mirage Online, I'd say they were messing with our heads.
Snow-covered Landwalk, and hopefully more of that Legendary Landwalk...this is gonna be crazy. But how are they gonna make it tourney legal? I can't wait til midnight Tues to find out!
Not so much wierd as sock-rockingly awesome!
Vintage, Standard, whatever..anybody given thought to how the hell "block constructed" will work? Or perhaps it will just be sort of snuck in between Alliances and Mirage and nobody will ever act like it came in late at all.
Actually relevant question...if this is the final Ice-Age block thing, then what card face will it feature? Will it be new, or rather in the old card face so as to be continuous with Ice Age and Alliances?

Damn right a Johan and Lim Dul card
I love the ice age story, magic story-line at its best
If this is true....

The internet is like drugs, it can be alot of fun, but most people on it say really stupid stuff
1. Will Coldsnap have cards that interact with Snow-Covered lands?
2. Will Coldsnap be released in Magic Online?
3. If questions 1 and 2 are yes, then will Ice Age also be released in Magic Online to make available the Snow-Covered lands that will be required for said cards from question 1?
Certainly it will be new cardface. And the design will be better. But how does that play into the woefully bad snowy cards. I hope they actually validate the snowcovered lands, as they've been trying to sweep that whole mechanic under the rug for years now.
Could it really be a ice age block set that just exists by itself, and yet is T2 legal. The only interplay it would have would be with sets ten years old. Maybe it will be a Chronicles white border thing with the first two sets, in the new cardframe, to go with the coldsnap black border set?

My bet: Coldsnap will be legal in legacy and vintage.
Since Legacy now has GPs for it, it can be considered by WOTC "Tournament Legal" (Yes i know so is vintage technically, but i mean in WOTC santioned tournaments not at GENCON).
The completion of the block is obviously meant so Classic format on magic online can have ICE AGE block join it, though of course several cards will be banned immediately.

I love Joboman, Poggy, Niv, and Vezok, because, while they may not be the best players, they still try to win. Having fun is the most important thing to a game, but I've learned that if you don't try to win, then you're ruining everyone else's fun.
So much fun. I started back Ice Age away-s, and whatever this is, it sounds super cool. Tournament legal cards are always a good thing - period. MaRo gets 3 cheers - 4 or 5 if this brings stasis to type 2 (or even extended!!!!!!!)

I'm not the only one who thinks that this is completely random, am I? It just seems kinda pointless to complete a block that's been out of print for this long.
I did wonder how long it would be before a new set took place in Dominaria though. I guess it's easier to look at Dominaria's past than its future.

I'll put in my vote for quite possibly the most random thing WOTC has done. EVER! However this is also getting me a bit excited. Will STP, Dark ritual and FoW be t2 legal(We can safely say no but there's always the slim chance).

Wow, this really impresses me; that's gotta be the most unexpected announcement I've ever seen WotC make about Magic.
...
The first thing this means is obvious: Ice Age block is hitting MTGO. This is clearly a way to make it into a three-set block for drafting purposes. That's something I'm definitely all for -- I'd love to see MTGO eventually encompass the entire life of the game.
The second, less obvious conclusion, is that Wizards is now doing a non-block small set every other year. To this I say HECK YEAH -- while I love the way that mechanics develop over blocks, I've been sad for a while that the nifty small set themes of sets like the Dark and Fallen Empires are gone. If we can expect to see a new random-themed set every other year from now on, that just means more opportunities for interesting and unique card ideas. I like it.
I'm really curious about whether it's Type-2 legal and about how it'll interact with the (less than incredible) mechanics from the rest of the block. I guess we'll find out more on Friday....

we're probably going to see ally colored gold cards in this set.
I'm definitely looking forward to this.
