My fiancee has recently gotten a job at a retro gaming store, and now wants to learn how to repair these retro consoles, starting with the old DMG Gameboys. Now I've been looking on ebay and can find lots of 4-5 for around 30 bucks, the tool kits for around 15... My question for anyone who has done this is should I go ahead and get her some replacement parts? If so what should I be looking at? MoBos, buttons, screens, full shells? I have no idea what the DMGs common fail points are, so I don't know what parts I should stock up on. If anyone has suggestions I am all ears on this one.
Screens would be where I'd start, those old green LCDs tend to have entire columns failing, then spreading. I've replaced screens in a few DS Lites, but haven't had occasion to crack a DMG-001 yet. Need to swap the screen in mine though, so I may grab a screen kit & tools & post a blow by blow of the process.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
I've spent most of my day trolling different forums, and youtube, and I've got good news for you! As long as the column failure is vertical you can fix this without replacing the screen. These missing columns is apparently due to weak solder joints between ribbon cable and LCD. If your decent with a soldering iron, you can attempt to reflow the joints. Here is one of the better videos on this that I've found on the repair if you're interested.
If you do end up tearing down your DMG I'd love a blow by blow. I can find tons of mod threads, but next to zero repair or restore threads. My fiancee's interest is infectious, leading me to digging out my DMG (broken ), along with all my older systems. Found out that Lightgun games aren't compatible with modern TVs. I tried playing Duck Hunt by aiming at the Christmas tree that I haven't taken down yet, but it's not nearly as fun.
