Recently, my laptop has been switching itself off at random intervals. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, it usually happens about half an hour to an hour after it's been turned on or waken from sleep. I've checked all the obvious things - ie battery, overheating, etc, and it doesn't seem to be any of them. There also doesn't appear to be that much demand on the computer at the time (ie, not that many programs running or other things going on in the background).
My laptop's an Acer Aspire 5610 running Vista if you need the specs.

does a dual proccessor on a computer mean twice the processing speed? (for example a dual processor with 1.8 ghz is really 3.6)

I have a question about this most games I play look fine graphically like Wow or Oblivion or others.
But some games like Fable and Kotor 2 have weird problems either graphics being extremely jagged off characters. Either that or its something like this,
My system has 1gig DDR2 RAM, AMD Athlon 3800+ 2.4ghz, Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra
Like I said its just odd how some games look fine graphically perfect and others look horrible for one reason or another.
By the way this isn't a permanent problem the first 2 planets I went to the graphics were 100% fine and this thing comes and goes every 2 minutes.
Ever since I went to my first planet outside this happened again if you have any recommendations that would be awesome.
Edit:
Forgot to list my driver version, ForceWare Release 163.75
This thread is never any help for anything, but I'll try nonetheless:
Is there any way to make a computer recognise a USB flash drive faster? The reason I ask is that when plugging my newly purchased flash drive into my laptop, it doesn't seem to recognise the device for ages. The green light on the drive itself flashes intermittently about every thirty seconds, but the computer never seems to recognise it (or if it does, it takes about ten minutes). Is this a problem with the drive, or should I change a setting of some sort on my computer?

Formatting your C drive will effectively erase everything on it. Your privacy will be maintained unless, of course, you were storing military secrets and are selling your PC to a cryptanalyst for some reason. Actually you don't even need to format your drive, as a full Windows installation will do it for you.
Then inside of the window, it has a red circle with a white X and says 'incorrect function.'
When I click OK (the only button) or the X on the top right corner, it tries making installation error logs, and says that installation was not successful.
When I click continue, it says that they will automatically search for information to diagnose the problem and send an error report.
Once I click continue, it states that there is no solution, and that I need to follow these directions:
1. Disconnect USB cable (it isnt connected yet, because the directions said DO NOT connect USB cable until step 16.
2. Click continue to restart computer and uninstall everything.
3. Try to reinstall once your computer is rebooted.
Then it just restarts my computer.
I'm not sure what the problem is, so let me know if you computer wizzes do.
Okay, so, I need a little help regarding my graphics card, I think.
I just got World of Warcraft. When I play, it's very laggy, and the frame rate is in the low teen's. I have 760 MB which is more than the minimum requirements for WoW. My friend said it's probably my graphics card. I know I have an integrated graphics card from Intel. 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset is what I think it is.
How do I go about upgrading that? Do I just purchase a new graphics card, and insert it where it belongs in the computer? How do I know if the graphics card will be compatible with my computer? What are some of the cheaper graphics cards that would allow me to play without as much lag?
I can provide any other info on my computer if it's needed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The major concern when determining what graphics card to purchase is what kind of expansion slot your motherboard uses for the graphics card. There are two major kinds: AGP and PCI-Express. PCI-Express is generally going to have better cards available; AGP is an older technology and there's not much development going on for it anymore.
If you purchased a machine from a major manufacturer and know the model number someone can probably find which slot you have. Once you know that pretty much any 3D graphics card with its own onboard RAM that uses the correct slot type is going to immediately improve your performance.
WoW is a bit of an older game so if you can get a video card with 256MB or 512MB of RAM you should get a huge performance boost. You can pretty easily find cards in that range for $50 these days.

My computer is a Compaq, and the model number is SR1222NX. It's from 2004. My friend asked me if I knew whether the computer was VGA or PCI-Express, and he said that it's probably not PCI-Express. Is VGA the same as AGP, or what?
Once I found out for sure whether its AGP (or VGA, or what have you), than all I have to do is go to the store and find a graphics card with its own onboard RAM that's compatible with AGP (or whatever my computer is), install it, and that should work?
Thanks for the help. Any further help on what slot it uses would be great
EDIT:
Okay, I did some searching and found this. That's the computer I have, except with 512 extra MB of RAM I added in.
"Video Output Interface PCI Express " and "Expansion Slots PCI Express x16 x 1 • PCI x 2 " would indicate that my computer would be able to use any PCI Express graphics card, am I correct?

Yes you can install a PCI-Express card into that. Meaning that you can buy pretty much any of the new cards. As long as they are not AGP slot the other reason why you get so much lag is due to the shared ram that the systems use.
With cheap systems like Compaq's most Dell's etc.. They use the ram that is normally not designed for video cards. Meaning that you see more lag and more frame rate problems.
I would also consider a bit more ram the video card is by far the biggest problem. Ram would be your second since in heavily congested areas and big instance runs of 10+ you will see a lot more system lag.
You will be fine by yourself or in smaller groups for sure though.
I wasn't sure where to put this, but it's computer related so I thought entertainment:
So in the last few days, whenever I open my notebook to go online, I'll either get everything blown up to full screen size, or normal sized the way I like.
As far as I can tell I haven't downloaded anything new that would have caused this, and I don't think it's a virus as that is the only problem.
So, my used PC arrived the other day. Besides a slightly busted keyboard and half the memory they promised (replacements of which shipped out today; I have the tracking number), it's seemed to be quite nice. It's needed some upgrades, though. And it's there that I'm running into major issues.
Issue the First: The ethernet card.
First, we need an ethernet card and Windows XP professional to access the internet. That's one of the main reasons I got the system. What it didn't appear to have was an ethernet card, which kind of confused me because they're supposed to be standard. It probably had something to do with being off-lease...so, a trip to Best Buy later, I got myself an ethernet card. So, I get home and install it...sort of. I'm not sure it fits.
It appears that the metal bar is just a bit too long, say, 1/8 of an inch. (I took photos, and uploaded them, but as I've been posting, they've disappeared from the server. Odd. If you think they'll help, I can upload a pic of almost anything.) Am I just not putting it in all the way? The green clasp closes, and the lights light up when I plug the line in. Yet it doesn't seem to work.
I wonder if it might be software. Everything I've seen from the documentation of the network and the card doesn't match what I'm seeing on the computer. According to the campus network, there's supposed to be a category in the control panel called Networks and Dial-Up Connections; I've got one category called Network Connections and another called Phone and Modem Connections. Somewhere down in all the systems is supposed to be an option called Local Area Connection with TCP/IP settings in the properties. No dice. According to the ethernet card instructions, under device manager, there is supposed to be a category called Networks Adapters. Again, no dice. There is, under Other Devices, something called an Ethernet Controller; it has a warning saying that it didn't have any drivers installed. It was like that before I installed the card. Is this the problem?
I've verified that I do, in fact, have Windows XP SP2. At least it says it is.
Issue the Second: That frigging express port.
It was a business machine, with a single chip controlling the graphics as opposed to a card. So, when I picked up the ethernet card, I also picked up a graphics card. The 8800GT was a bit out of my range ($270), and the 7600 GS was apparently discontinued. I got the 512 MB 8500 for $140; seemed a fair trade-off...and my monitor is only 19'.
One problem.
It's a PCI Express card. And my computer has a PCI Express-ish port. Yeah. Express-ish. I really need to upload a pic of this:
It appears to look exactly like the PC illustration of the PCI Express, but the divider in the contact edge (sorry, no clue as to terminology) is in the middle.
I have no clue as to what this could be. Is there any way to fix this? Can I flip something up, or replace a head, or...
Issue the Third: Idle Curiosity.
Um, what the heck are these things?
EDIT: Sorry about the image size; I've been trying to drop them down, but I am apparently just full of fail.

so, when you say it didn't appear to have an ethernet card do you mean that there were no places to plug in an ethernet cable on the computer? if you already had that and it just wasn't working, then you may not need the new ethernet card. considering that the inside of the computer saying 2004, i'd imagine that it would come standard w/ that. i ask because of the ethernet controller with no drivers installed. if you right click on that, you should get an option to update the driver. if that doesn't work, then just go to the company website. they usually offer things like that for free.
also, what kind of computer is it? to get to your tcp/ip settings go to control panel then to network connections. there you should see local area connection. right click that and go to properties. you should then see internet protocol (tcp/ip). just click on it and click properties.
that picture is a bit blurry, so i can't really tell, but i'm thinking that's probably a PCI slot, not a PCI Express slot.

Try a different tracker or even just a different torrent. If the seeds are in the States, Comcast could be screwing with them. You might also be throttled by your client somewhat. Incoming bandwidth is proportionally linked to outgoing bandwidth, so if your router or ISP are limiting what you can send out, it'd seriously hamper your incoming speeds as well.

I have a question concerning my office computer this time.
I just had someone from the geek squad come out and install the hard drive from our old, dead PC into our new one. I'm just having trouble accessing the old email lists that I was using before. I can't seem to find the address book I was using anywhere. I was using (at the urging of my boss) Outlook 2003.

Incoming bandwidth is proportionally linked to outgoing bandwidth, so if your router or ISP are limiting what you can send out, it'd seriously hamper your incoming speeds as well.

I know there's probably something really basic that can help me do this, but my computer skills are less than optimal.
Any help would be great! Thanks!
Oh, and if it helps, I'm on a PC, not a Mac
I just had someone from the geek squad come out and install the hard drive from our old, dead PC into our new one. I'm just having trouble accessing the old email lists that I was using before. I can't seem to find the address book I was using anywhere. I was using (at the urging of my boss) Outlook 2003.
