Don't do what a lot of people do when they try to play Chaotic Neutral players do and pretend that CN is an excuse to be a lolsorandom backstabbing psychopath
Become a psychopath. Backstabbing is okay, so long as it's not literal. Lolsorandom is bad, but unexpected is good - every move should be calculated, but innovative enough to keep your nemeses on their toes. You should focus on becoming the CEO of an extremely profitable company.
Chaotic Neutral is neutrality (whatevertheheck that means), plus "There can be no system that can rank the rightness of actions throughout time, ever."
You don't choose to be chaotic. You either are or you're not. You believe that thing, or you don't. It's not like you get anything out of it, other than the ability not to restrain whatever personal source of intuition. But simply using the personal intuition all the time - is - Chaos. That's the thing being accomplished. If you wanted to do that, go do it. Bam, you are now in the category of Chaotic.
If you aren't Lawful, you either believe strongly that Lawfulness is Bad, or you don't. If you're trying to counter Lawfulness, [a] you're saying the DnD books have it wrong (you'd have to be Good or Evil to want to do that), and [b] you can't do that with any of -your- actions, only in somehow changing other people.

I often find that people label themselves as being "chaotic-whatever" when instead they should be "neutral-whatever." Actually living in a manner true to being chaotic is difficult, as most people live within some ruleset.

I think this is being overthunk. "Chaotic" simply means you don't appreciate any form of constraint on your (or someone else's, actually) freedom. For example, a chaotic person has no reason to break a law if it doesn't interfere with their life and they consider it a just law. It's more like a strong, meddling State (hello, Ayn Rand), tradition or societal norms that piss off a chaotic person.
They also think that your personal code of conduct doesn't need to be rigid; it's okay to change your opinion, specially if you can justify it rationally or emotionally (but insanity is OK as well). Similarly, they don't like to plan, but prefer to leave their options open. This means they are very flexible, but also unreliable.
The "neutral" part simply means that they aren't idealistic enough to sacrifice their energy/time/life for a higher concept that doesn't directly benefit themselves (peace/homeland/the innocent/etc) but they do have an ethical threshold of stuff they aren't willing to do.
So basically, Chandra is chaotic neutral, so I suggest dipping your hair in gasoline and lightning it on fire.
Chaotic neutral, as I understand it, would embrace libertarian viewpoints. Thus: If you're an American, vote for Ron Paul, then become Ron Paul. But above all, remember that you're both chaotic -- i.e. not bounded by a hard and fast code of conduct, even if you're still technically orderly -- and neutral, i.e. not good or evil. Try to push the neutral part in your public image. Keep quiet around other people. Never let them know what your plans are. That said, never give in to paranoia. Just be careful.

Ambition must be made to counteract ambition.
Individualities may form communities, but it is institutions alone that can create a nation.
Nothing succeeds like the appearance of success.
Here is my principle: Taxes shall be levied according to ability to pay. That is the only American principle.
They're not really crazy, they just don't care about rules, order, good, or evil. :3
This can be coupled with restraint to make a very dangerous person.

Selfishness and dont take anything seriously works.
In fact, you should change your username to this from Captain_Morgan to make it all the more convincing.
